gud pm everyone. i wish to purchase remote for my canon 400d but have no idea which one to buy. i have no knowledge with remotes/cable releases or whatever they are called. :KO: but i want to have one for the purpose of night photography, and because it is said that you cannot do a practical bulb exposure (more than 30 seconds) when you dont have a remote.
which is better, cable or IRs? or they're just the same. and please be kind enough to suggest good models of the said items. thanks very much.

Hi Mycel,
on a 400D a remote is more flexible. you can use it to do bulb exposures and you can use it as a long-range remote! no more running back to the ranks when taking self-timered shots :-) also easier to execute jumping self-portraits! hehehe
i think its called the canon RC-1 wireless remote :-)

We've had better luck in the studio with a wired remote. The wireless remote tends to be iffy when we're doing painting with light exercises.
Cheers!

Wireless remote for me. More flexible than the wired one.

+1 here on Sr.Jay's night photography/long exposures..
Recently, when I got courage to try it manually though (with just a flashlight for focusing, no remote), on a shoreline in Subic, the more I was wondering how the night owls (Jay J., Norman A., et.al.) do it with such finesse.
It is damn tough and practically impossible to have a decent long exposure (bulb) if you haven't got a cable release..
.. and I guess knowing your hyperfocal math pays-off at this field.. :)

thank you for the kind replies sir jo, cezar and erick=)
@ sir jo, i wish to attend some of your seminars. but couldn't commit myself due to tight schedules.
@ erick, sir jay's photography are really inspiring.=) when i was told that remotes are essential for long exposures, i immediately looked for the prices, but forgot to decide first on what remote to buy. hehe!=) but i think i will go with sir jay's recommendation (canon RC-1) since it was his technique that'll be doing. thanks!=)
