dear friends,

just want to hear everyone's opinion on sigma lenses for canon.

i own the following:
> canon eos 350d w/ the kit lens
> canon 50 1.8 II
> canon 75-300 4-5.6 III
> canon 430ex
> sigma 18-50 2.8

i plan to upgrade my lenses to 2.8 in the not so distant future and i'm really considering the sigma lenses like the 70-200 2.8 to replace my canon 75-300 4-5.6 III. of course the best alternative is to get the canon 70-200 2.8L but too expensive for a beginner like me. my question now, is it wise to invest on sigma lens? yun lang kaya ko eh. then i also plan to get the macro lens of sigma. i'm actually thinking of going all sigma lens na.

hope to hear from you guys and gals.

thanks,
edsel

Like most would say here, Sigma lenses are good only if you purchase a good copy of the lens you want.

True, Sigma makes for a very decent alternative... just bring your camera to the store and test that lens. Go for it. :)

that'll be me.

i got this lens from jtphotoworld last month, and since that time i've shot the nestea beach volley tournament in bora, and had an opportunity to shoot the pbl games last week. if you need sample shots using this lens, you can check out the shots i posted over at the sports thread here at dpp.

when i dropped by their pasong tamo branch to get the lens (i had made a bank deposit earlier during the day to pay for it), there was a display unit in their glass cabinet, but the saleslady (melody, i believe) went upstairs to fetch me a new unit.

when i tested the "new" unit on the camera, i found out that its AF feature wasn't working - at all. surpised, melody then offered their display unit for me to use instead, and as it turned out, its AF worked quite fine. eventually, it was (and still is) the unit i took home with me and used in the beach volley shots in bora the next day.

so far, the unit has been performing well for me. i believe that its weight is something you have to get used to (i heard that it's slightly heavier than canon L IS equivalent). focusing motor is smooth and quiet (well, it is an HSM lens).

i read reviews of the lens on numerous sites before i finally decided to purchase one. so far, the feedback on this specific lens has been very positive.

another zoom lens you can consider is their 50-150 2.8. i've seen ads for this on different photo magazines (can't remember if dpp was one of them), and it looks good, too

hope this bit of info helps you out.

thanks mark for the great input. it surely made a big factor in my decision to pursue this lens soon. hope to see you all canon users, ala EB.

Edsel, you noted that you had a Sigm 18-50 2.8 How'd you like it? I'm considering a 3rd party walk-around.

Wondering about this as well, seems like a better option than the 24-70 f2.8 for a cropped sensor... How much in Phil?

patrick - hi there! i'm very satisfied so far. it serves my needs of a wide to normal lens with a wide opening of 2.8. very useful sa mga tight shots. im actually considering an all sigma lens with 2.8 openings na. very reasonable yung price eh.

david - i initially considering the 24-70 2.8 but bec of the cropped factor, i decided to get this instead. i'm happy with it. got it sa jt photoworld for p23,500.

glenn - hi. i'm not sure if i am related to louie naguit. from what i know, konti lang naguit. maybe i am related to him if he's from magalang, pampanga. thanks.

Edsel, is it true that if you get the DC models (for digital), the focal range really is 18-50 and won't get the 1.6 multiplication factor?

regarding the canon 75-300 4-5.6 III , most reviews i read was that the sigma 70-300 APO is sharper than the canon 75-300 4-5.6 III...although the sigma is around 2,000 pesos more expensive.

50mm 1.8- thats a very cheap lens... with a plasticy body...but a very sharp lens.

regarding the sigma 24-70 2.8 and canon 24-70 2.8 L both sharpness is almost at par... so if you don't care about the weather sealed lens of the canon then you can get a sigma instead which is far more cheaper.

the 70-200 is a very decent lens. good for sports.

for sample shots go to the following links
www.pbase.com/hochiabaya/bjj2 (http://www.pbase.com/hochiabaya/bjj2)
www.pbase.com/hochiabaya/af31 (http://www.pbase.com/hochiabaya/af31)
www.pbase.com/hochiabaya/af3girls (http://www.pbase.com/hochiabaya/af3girls)

(all photos were taken with the 70-200 resized for web and have minimal PP, if ever i did need to use it)

Sigma lenses are ok, I have had at least 4 units, lucky enough to get non-lemons, the only reason i've decided to put some for sale is because i got the Canon counterparts.

@David, I don't think the DC will not change anything on a cropped sensor...I think the classification is just to separate it from the DG line and create a separate line for cropped senors - similar to Canon's EF and EF-S lines. If not then my shots using the sigma 10-20 on my 30d would look extremely distorted

@patrick, the 18-50 is a decent lens. the canon 17-55 2.8 is ridiculously expensive at 55k. most of the shots in this gallery www.pbase.com/hochiabaya/navotas (http://www.pbase.com/hochiabaya/navotas) were taken with the 18-50

Hello sa lahat.

I just got a Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 DC macro and used it on a wedding a few hours ago and I must say that Its the best (low cost) lens there is. Won't need another lens in my bag.:)

It's Macro so I got some great close-ups, ultra wide at 17mm f2.8 (didnt need flash), and decent zoom @ 70mm f4.5 opening.

Got it from Tony Leung (New Sankyo, HK) for hk$2500 = P15t only.
