hmmm hard question to answer since I have a D70s. I always think you, the camera and lens work in combo to capture a sharp pic. Wanna wait for the "D80"?

My first DSLR was the D50, and now I'm using the D70s (the D50 is with my Dad now). Both cameras take very good pictures (both are using the same format, i.e. 6.1 megapixels).

Personally, if you were to choose between the two, the features would be the deciding factor. Check the features of both cameras and decide if you need the additional features of the D70s.

imho, if your main concern is sharpness - then i think any of the 2 cameras you've mentioned should work well. they are both solid performers. i think its better for you to check out what particularly LENS you'll be attaching to them. this i think has more bearing on how sharp your pix would be. :)

Levi,

My first DSLR is the D50 with 18-55mm lens, then bought the D70s after 2 months with the 18-70mm. The problem i had with the D70 is the "noise", unlike the D50 it's quite sharper and no problem with the noise. I've tried a lot of lens, read the manual over and over again and almost got rid of it sa sobrang inis hehehehe. Whenever i shoot an evening event and if there is little light available, even if i use a flash...it still creates some "noise". I ended up buying a noise ninja hehehehe.

I'm planning to have my vacation on October this year in the philippines. I hope i can join you guys in the Nikon EB to ask more questions and i'll be giving away Camera Magazines for everyone that uses a Nikon camera.

Thanks,
Louie

ah, if its noise - then definitely D50 has a better control over the D70 (not sure about the D70s though..) Im very much contented with the noise (or the lack of it) from my D70s unit.:) regarding sharpness - were you able to try the 18-55 to your D70/s? this might the reason on your concern on sharpness. i think the 18-70 performs a tad better than the 18-55.

anyway, hope to see you soon and get some of those magazines! hehehe

cheers!

Levi,

When i bought the D70s kit, it comes with a 18-70mm lens, i've also tried different type of lens like 55-200mm,70-300mm,170-500mm,50mm,17-35mm. It works perfect when there is available light, it does not work right if there less light available. It's ok, i'll figure it out one way or the other hehehehe.

Thanks for the advise. By the way, do you have any idea as to what kind of magazine should i bring aside from Digital Photogrpher from UK....hehehehe it's quite expensive kasi hehehe $11.95 a copy. Shutterbug is only $4.95 and the rest.

Thanks,
Louie

Bro, I've seen somewhere that it would go for $899 for the body. The D70s body is at $699 at B&H.

Although for the features, might turn out cheaper in the long run... until a better unit comes out. :D

If I had a little more budget I would go for the d200. Less noise acdg to some reviews.

Sharpness? that strange, I thought it was the lens that has to do with sharpness?

I've no experience with the D50. I do have a D70 and a D200 though and the noise levels on the D200 are much less than that of the D70. But both are still usable even at ISO 1600 IMHO.

Right now I have a couple of questions for those that have handled the D50. I am currently looking for a third DSLR. I personally use my D200 and a backup photog uses my D70, the third DSLR will be staying with me as a natural light (no flash) unit with a bunch of F/1.8 primes. My question is, is the D50 good enough for weddings at these natural light shots? My alternative would be to go for a second hand Fuji S3 Pro which I really like. But the D50 is much less expensive and is brand new. I have a bunch of nikon lenses so that's not a problem.

Both do Louie. :) Just choose which will best serve your workflow or like the others said, wait for the D80.

i had the D50 for 5 months and have been using the D70s for 3 months already.
i like them both, and i had an opportunity to shoot with both while covering a sports event.

I find the D50's high-ISO output to be much more pleasant than the D70s' output. It seems brighter and the grain is neutral. too bad it's hampered by a slower frame rate... and the fact that it can't seem to handle the sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 at all.

if i were to be stuck with either one, i won't complain about either. both are great :)
