I just picked my manual 135mm 2.5 lens from Sanly Mega yesterday. The cleaning job was excellent and the charge was very reasonable (less than P1000). Bring it to Sanly Cubao if you are in a hurry. :)

Willy,

I think so. As long as it's a Pentax K or screwmount, they'll clean it.

I use Pentax, Vivitar and Osawa lenses on my Pentax, will they service these as well? Thanks!

I have my older gear CLA'd in Picture City, Timog QC. Look for Mike, does things really well. He brought back to life a Pentax A3D and a Canon AE-1 Program--both were deemed unrepairable elsewhere. He also did a good job fixing my oily Pentax K 135/2.5 which Columbia (Makati) messed up.

From EDSA it is halfway to T. Morato on the left side. It shares a building with an RCBC Savings Bank and a beauty parlor/salon/whatever. If you reach the rotunda, lumampas ka na ...

Yes. After the rotunda there's one more street and it is on the right. Prepare to honk your horn (if in car) because the guards have the parking blocked off, but they'll let you park if they know you're heading to Picture City.

Ahh ok! Near the rotunda lang pala... Thanks!

Oh...one more thing. It might be wise to call ahead - 9269454 - the sales person does not seem equip to receive CLA stuff; it has to be Mike himself there.

Bong,

I tested my old lenses with my K100, how come I can't get it to work? The lenses I have are a Pentax-M 1:2 50mm, a Vivitar 28mm 1:2.8 and an Osawa 1:45 100-200mm (did I describe them correctly? I just typed what was written on the lens:))... I put the 40mm in, but when I tried to take a picture, it wouldn't work. What can be the problem kaya?

06-23-2007, 03:51 PM
Franz did you :

- set focus to MF
- used M Mode
- F1 with S lens used to Available (custom setting)
- using aperture ring to Permitted (custom setting)

TIP: use Preview Method set to Digital so that you can use the Preview switch to look at the scene then adjusting the shutter speed/ f setting to taste before taking the actual shot.

Willy,

Aha! I did set the focus to MF, but didn't set it to M mode... how noob a move is that eh? Thanks! Will try it all out now! :)

Willy, Question: The settings that you mentioned, particularly the last 2 and your added tip, can I leave these settings as is even if I use the kit lens? Or do I have to change them everytime I switch? Thanks again!

Hi Franz,

Sorry was out of my mind...este, of my home office...Willy's advise re the S lens and aperture ring permitted are permanently set on my DS. I never bother switching back the settings when I switch to DA, FA or A lens.

Oh. You haven't solved that? I tried a friend's on recently and it worked with my DS without a hitch. Are you able to source a 3rd party one in China?

Clouding can be cause by various reasons. There are a kind which is permanent and hopeless to clean or remove but you won't find that out until you have it actually cleaned. Good luck with picture city!

Something weird with my moldy and cloudy lenses, when you inspect them, you can visibly see the grime inside the lens, but when I tried them out yesterday, the pictures that came out from my grimy 50mm was clear... I haven't tried the 28mm yet though. My 100-200mm lens on the other hand, also has grime and though I tested it last night, wasn't able to properly assess the image quality since I can't get a focused picture from it! Hahaha... but, though the picture produced by the 100-200mm lens was out of focus, it was relatively clear from what I expectec what with all the mold and cloudiness...

Isn't it supposed to be that if you lenses are cloudy, the picture wil be cloudy too? And if it's full of mold, the mold can be seen in the picture?

Just weirded out, but glad though that the pictures came out better than expected...

Not really. To a certain degree mold in the lens is negligible...like it will not affect picture quality at all, but at a certain point, the out will become soft and you will find yourself losing an EV or so. Anyway...maybe there's hope for some of your lenses...

Bong,

You made my day! :) I'll be sure to have them mold cleaned off before they cause any lasting damage! Thanks!

I've read somewhere that molds and fungi on lens elements generally affects only the autofocusing performance. If the infestation is severe, it will cut off some light and probably even damage the lens coatings. My Tokina zoom lens has become cloudy and I can see 2 fungi growths on the middle element (mukha silang bonsai tree :D). I used it on 2 occassions, pero clear pa rin ang images! I couldn't comment on the autofocus 'coz it hunts even way back.

Franz A.D. Morales
06-28-2007, 09:27 AM
My lenses are all Manual, save for the kit lens which is the only AF lens I have, so I guess the mold in my lenses isn't that big an issue in terms of performance? But in the long run, I know it would be detrimental to my lens' health... kaya pa ba tanggalin mold and cloudiness inside the lens?

francisgan
06-28-2007, 09:42 AM
Sir Franz, I think kaya pa. It all depends on the severity of the infestation. They do not damage the glass itself, but the coatings on the glass get eaten. So, it is best na ipalinis pa rin sila at the soonest possible time. Lalo na tag-ulan na ngayon, medyo nagiging aktibo na sila.

you better invest on a drybox Franz... even a DIY will do...

Franz A.D. Morales

@totie: how do you DIY a drybox? any instructions?

totie.bruno
07-02-2007, 10:54 AM
@franz
my DIY drybox are the following:
- lock & lock food keeper (4.5 liter capacity worth P349.75 and was bought at SM)
*the size depends on what other accessories you're going to put inside...
- water glass reusable dehumidifier (worth P149.75 and was bought at Handyman)
- analog hygrometer (forgot the price and was bought at Concorde)

i put my camera and other accessories in there whenever i'm not using it...

@totie: thanks man! will buy the stuff later at Megamall after work! :) Better safe than never noh? hehehe...

you're welcome dude! :)

yep! better be safe...

francisgan
07-02-2007, 12:33 PM
@Sir Franz - Yup. Buy a DIY drybox na. Mura lang naman. Here's my setup:
1. See-through crate = 350 from Handyman (forgot the brand)
2. Water Glass-brand dehumidifier = 150 from Handyman too
3. Generic analog hygrometer = 90 from SM Department Store, Men's Section

All in all, less than 600 pesos! Ok na. :) The Eureka Auto-Drybox from Aperture is really nice though. At 5k, siguro next year nalang mag-upgrade.

P.S. Look for the Lock & Lock-Brand crate as Sir Totie suggested. It's better sealed. I have to do some minor DIY pa sa crate na nabili ko para talagang sealed shut. Hehe.

Franz,

My P130++ el-cheapo setup...

http://www.ontu.net/images/_IGP7011.jpg
Holds a body w/ lens plus 2 extra lenses. Note the humungous silica-gel which I get for free! It is not exactly air tight but because the thing does not "breathe" anyway (there's no exchange of air in or out and not as if the pressure changes significantly). I have my ear on the ground for friends who has access to:

1) medical equipment
2) semi-conductor industries
3) other electronic biz

When they import equipment, they are usually packed with silica gel by the bags which they sometimes simply throw away.

Franz A.D. Morales
07-02-2007, 02:12 PM
@bong: looks effective enough! hehe... but I don't know where to get silica gel so I'll just make do with what francis and totie suggested...

francisgan
07-02-2007, 02:55 PM
@Franz - The Water Glass-brand Dehumidifier is actually just silica gel in a nice microwaveable pouch. What's cool is when the silica is fully moisture-absorbed, there is an indicator in the pouch that turns from blue to pink. Pop it in a microwave oven for 5 minutes and it is refreshed. Let it cool, and ready to fight ulit. You can use it, according to the packaging, for 5 years. The pouch is about a quarter of a kilo. When buying other brands, be sure to check the contents. It should be pure silica gel (SiO2). Some cheap dehumidifiers (also available in Handyman, Ace, other DIY shops) have harmful chemicals that may corrode the innards of your camera and lenses. If you want to buy cheaper silica gels (like the ones Sir Bong have), you can buy them at your friendly shops in Hidalgo. :)

@Sir Bong - Haha. That is really nice. For P130++, el cheapo talaga. :) Useful yan a. If ever may matagalang trip sa humid na lugar, pwede siyang portable na drybox! Good idea.

Franz A.D. Morales
07-02-2007, 03:01 PM
@francis: Oh I see! hehe... I thought it was literally some kind of water glass humidifying system of some sorts :) got confused with the brand name, thought it was the literal name.
