View Full Version : Photo Entries for September- Issue 04

Issue 04 is going to be jammed pack with local photographs. We have committed space to the Olympus EB and the second Nikon EB that will both happen soon. We we will also allocate some space for our regular Reader's Gallery. However, if we run out of pages, we may replace some of the photos from the feature articles with your photos (if they are really good).

For this month's photo challenge we would ike to see images of:

1) Low Light Landscape- we want to see images taken at the golden hour--dusk and dawn.

2) Stage- we want to see photos from the stage, ie. rock concerts, the fans reactions, dramatic lighting, etc.

Remember that we will only entertain a maximum of three (3) photos from each member to give a chance to others to submit also. Last month, we had members posting more than three photos.

Please wait for the September Issue 04 Gallery to be set up by Nino Pasamonte. It will go up very soon.

The deadline for all photos will be August 19. Should we contact you, you will only be given four days to submit to us your CD. We're giving a shorter time period for this because we have loads of photos to process for this issue and don't want to run too far behind our production schedule.

So everyone, its time to go out there and start sending us those photos! Good luck.

Good question Niko. I didn't think of that one. Three photos per member and not per category. That way everyone has a chance to get chosen.

Hi Nick! I have several images taken during dusk or dawn for your low light landscapes category. However, I also have images shot after dusk. Will they qualify for this? Or do I have to wait for another category in future issues. Thanks.

once you've submitted the photo in the gallery or send us the CD, it is already assumed that it was tweaked. we require the photos to have no border or any watermark when entered. there is no such thing as replacing the photo. only time a photo will would consider replacing the photo if it was truncated or damaged when burned to the cd. normally, you'd take steps to verify the data that was written.

i am confident that the submissions have been fantastically tweaked/edited by the participants of the contest. you've probably spent hours and hours making sure that it comes out right. to everyone, good luck and keep submitting.

one more thing, just to clear it up. we do require that participants of the contests are already using their real names as their usernames.

Hi. Nick. Can I post black and white pictures or just colored for the low-light landscapes? They are still within the golden hour.

After dusk? If there is still detail then why not. But remember that each forum member is only alllowed three entries for our September issue.

Thanks Nick. There is detail of course. I was just lucky to be there at that moment. You can verify in the exif files what time I took the pictures. Thanks again.

Derick,

It sure still is open. My first Post on this thread states a deadline of August 19. Remember you get only three entries so choose wisely. Under the Photo Gallery, we have a September contest section. Scroll and you won't miss it. Good luck.

I'm thinking to post some photos for this contest but I'm leaving to study in the US very soon. Is it alright if my family submits the photos for me if I happen to be selected? Barring this, is it possible to submit electronically via e-mail to a large account (e.g. Gmail)?

Looking at the entries... it seems there are some that aren't familiar what DUSK is?

A sunset shot is NOT DUSK because Dusk by definition has to have the sun already below the horizon. So if I can see the sun in the shot, it's NOT shot at dusk.

ok, but this is a bit confusing because nick tuason's initial post said "images taken at the golden hour--dusk and dawn."

according to wikipedia: "In photography (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photography), the golden hour is the first and last hour of sun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun) during the day when a specific photographic effect is achieved with the quality of the light during these hours."

that would seem to indicate the direct availability of the sun in the sky, thus casting a "golden" hue to everything....

clarifications, please?

How about sunrise and sunset? That scope should be wide enough. Don't forget, just four days left so get those photos in!

Hi Nick,

If I may suggest, why don't we have the sunrise and sunset category in another issue? This is altogether different from your initial category of dusk and dawn. Remember I even asked you if my after dusk images would qualify?

An image taken at dusk or dawn never has the sun in it. If you look at the definitions of dusk and dawn, it is clear that the sun is not yet seen or has not appeared yet.

The dictionary in my dock defines dawn as "the first appearance of light in the sky before sunrise" while dusk is defined as "the darker stage of twilight." These are "the first hours of sun during the day" as defined by wikipedia.

We can go more technical by defining the three stages of twilight. But then my experience as a night fisherman tells me that the "golden hours" happen when the sun is still below (dawn) or already below (dusk) the horizon. This is caused by the refraction and scattering of the suns rays from the atmosphere.

For those of you who had been shooting after the Pinatubo eruption would have observed that dusk and dawn images were more magnificent then, especially two to three years after.

So, if you who want to capture the "magic light" - wake up early, go to the spot you scouted the day before and tripods should have been set by 4am (depends on the time of year). In the evening, do not pack up until after 30min to 1hour after the sun has set. This is when the magic glow happens. And remember to work fast because the light changes very quickly. This is what I always tell participants in my location photo tours. Happy shooting.

Is it okay to submit photos with a little digital editing? like Brightness and contrast editing? I had a bunch of photos that I edited before and all the EXIF data was erased because the program didn't retain the EXIF Data unlike the other photo programs. (I should have known better then) I also wasnt able to keep the original files.

On a simpler note... should the original EXIF Data be intact for pictures to be submitted for the Contests, let alone the Picture posts?

Thanks!

not necessarily. as long as you kept notes on what the EXIF was and share it to us later on.
