Hello John,
I'm a (former) Capture NX user. I'm saying "former" in parenthesis, because lately I have Adobe Lightroom and I found it faster in my raw workflow. But I haven't totally abandon Capture NX because its the only program that truly understand NEF files.
I would suggest you explore/play around with the "Base Settings". Everything you need to do is already there. You can adjust contrast either via the sliders (not really that advisable) or you can use the "Curves" in the base settings. You can also add settings for contrasts and color correction/enhancement via steps, however, I found out that this makes the files bigger (in mean larger MB files).
Its also very useful in doing batch inputs. What I usually do is find a photo to edit. I adjust the ff: in Base Settings
- WB
- Turn on the other Raw settings (using user-defined tone curves, sharpening=unchanged,
hue=0)
- Contrast via curves
- USM (using 55-5-0 sharpening values)
- Adjust Noise
- Turn-on the dust reference thingie
- Turn-on Auto abberation adjustment
- Turn-on auto Moire adjustment
I then save this as a setting. Then I use the batch-input function. You can also use the file browser on the Capture NX and select-highlight files to be edited ala-Adobe bridge.
I hope this helps. :)
