SanDisk poised to unveil Extreme IV CompactFlash and Extreme Readers Wednesday, July 19, 2006 | by Rob Galbraith

Later today, SanDisk will unveil a new CompactFlash series capable of card-to-computer transfer rates that are well over twice as fast as the quickest cards currently available. Dubbed Extreme IV (http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Catalog%281191%29-SanDisk_Extreme_IV_CompactFlash.aspx) and slated for release in 2GB (http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Item%281991%29-SDCFX4-2048-SanDisk_Extreme_IV_CompactFlash_2GB.aspx), 4GB (http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Item%281994%29-SDCFX4-4096-SanDisk_Extreme_IV_CompactFlash_4GB.aspx) and 8GB (http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Item%281997%29-SDCFX3-8192-SanDisk_Extreme_IV_CompactFlash_8GB.aspx) capacities, the new line also puts SanDisk back at or near the top of the leaderboard in digital SLR write speed. But the solid in-camera performance of Extreme IV is really the sidebar; the main story is how SanDisk's new flagship memory card line can dramatically reduce the time it takes to copy photos to the computer for editing.

Did we mention how fast the Extreme IV cards are at card-to-computer transfers? Here's a taste: the best CompactFlash cards on the market now are capable of real-world throughput between about 15MB-17MB/second in the best shipping readers we've tried. By comparison, the SanDisk Extreme IV 2GB, when inserted in an Extreme FireWire Reader, tops out at a whopping 38.6MB/second, with the Extreme IV 4GB weighing in at 38.4MB/second.

Prices: Extreme IV 2GB $160, 4GB $320, 8GB $640

Heard about this release... no wonder prices of the Ultra II and Extreme III dropped.

Nope! Won't pay the $60 premium for faster transfer to computer.

More from the article:

Before you can move pictures off the card at breakneck speed, something has to put pictures on there in the first place. We've run Extreme IV 2GB and 4GB CompactFlash cards through seven Canon and Nikon digital SLR models so far, and in all cases the Extreme IV 2GB model emerged in first or second place, duking it out for supremacy with the Hoodman PPO 150X-133X 2GB CompactFlash card in Canon cameras in particular. Because even the newest models from the two leading digital SLR makers lack support for either PIO Mode 6 or UDMA (any mode), the Extreme IV in-camera write speed bump is best described as an incremental improvement over Extreme III.

Like to get the 2Gb as well but might wait for a firmware upgrade for my CompactDrive to accomodate the faster PIO mode access.

id pay the premium for faster transfer from camera to cf. i've done some testing with extreme III, they are as fast as the published rate. unlike the other brands. will post some benchmarks soon.

I would too if the write speed from camera to CF was what really improved but based on the article Alvin posted, it's just incremental. It's the transfer rate from CF to computer that is significantly faster. :)

Heard about this from my cousin's email. Even Sony's memory stick is being duplicated and sold as original locally. I am a victim. Got mine in Greenhills, then read a thread regarding fake memory stick. Found out that what I bought was fake! Watch out what you're buying from Greenhills.

Thanks for the link, been wanting to read this. Might be why there are some being sold at unusually low prices. :)

i didnt see any big difference between the 1GB normal, 1GB ultraII, 1GB extremeIII in terms of read and write with my 30D using 5/fps.

In-camera, the difference is not as noticeable unless you shoot a lot filling up the buffer. The difference is really noticeable when transfering files from card to computer.
