I was wondering if anyone could inform me what kind of resolution do i need to generate for a billboard? let's say 30'x30'?

I have a Canon 8mp camera, will shoot in raw, and plan to uprez the pics later on.
How much should i uprez to? and how?

Would the largest jpeg output from the raw converter be good enough?
or should i output in tif? sRGB?
What should be the final resolution submitted to the billboard printing company?

the billboard printing company should know what resolution they need. it differs from one company to company. you might want to give them a call.

uprez... either the 10% image size bicubic smoother or genuine fractal print pro. the link to genuine fractal print pro is found http://www.ononesoftware.com/detail.php?prodLine_id=7

thanks nino!

unfortunately i have no idea who will be doing the printing, since i'm just the one taking the pics. :)

The printers do uprez it themselves dont' they?
What are the odds, that 300dpi A4 size jpeg files would be good enough?

i did the resizing myself in genuine fractals. took a couple of hours for my dinky pc to do it, at 300 dpi as well. tarpaulin printers they were. it came out a really big fricking file.

usually for billboards, the resolution of the image can be 72dpi to 300dpi (if possible but very big file!!) since it's huge and the pixellation cannot be seen from far away.

here, we set the image 50% of the total projection size of print and let the printer do the blow-ups.

We do a lot of photobanners for events and we lay them out in photoshop at actual size e.g. 5'x5' (60"x60") at 300 dpi which is still manageable. at 30'x30' (360"x360") at 300 dpi would probably be too large a file to handle. 50 to 72 dpi would be fine enough for that size since you'll only be packing 50 to 72 dots in a square inch, i dont think there'd be any pixellation at that resolution.

Since my pictures still need more graphic work after i shoot them graphics, layout, texts, effects, a layout designer will be doing more work on it.

I can't imagine any graphic designer would want to work with 500MB tif image files, let alone if i give them 100 images at that size (50GB).

Wouldn't it makes more sense if the uprez be done after all the layout is done?
Which means i just submit A4 size jpegs?

Just give your adjusted files to them in original pixels, height, and width. Jpegs. The graphic designers will prepare the files for printing since they will incorporate the graphics. The printer then will be the one to interpolate your files, and this part will be their call on as to how many dots per inch. Unlike small banners, billboard resolutions are tolerable because from a distance of 1 meter the images are blurred already, and you dont look normally that close

you can give the artist your final edited images in tiff files at 300 dpi with a byte size of at least 35 mb or higher non interpolated files
