View Full Version : 1st Time as secondary wedding photog...
richardsanz 05-05-2007, 04:07 AM Hi,
I'm new here in dpp, nice and very informative forum! I'm still a beginner and just a hobbyist
Anyways, my friend (who also is a photographer) invited me to a wedding of his cousin so I can practice, I really enjoyed the shoot and my friend who is really good and experienced kept on giving me useful advice.
Just wanted to post some of my candid shots so anyone can comment on how I can improve. I am very familiar with photoshop so there is some post-editing like hue, saturation, cropping, etc.
Thanks so much in advance and more power to all!

vince_azcuna 05-05-2007, 07:46 AM Hi Richard,
Very nice dreamy captures. The first one though might have been better if it had been dead center of the aisle, expressing symmetry and balance. I just can't help but notice the little skewness.
I like the second photo, you were right on timing. However, the eye is confused as to who is your subject. Most likely you were waiting for the bride-groom to kiss as well, but did not, while the parents did (which would have been a nice secondary subject at that point). What happened is the parents did the more interesting action to the eye, while the couple did not, but the parents are the out-of-focus ones. I feel that the eye tries to see something interesting on the couple, but is pulled to the parents intead.
Just my 2 cents. :)

Hey vince! yup exactly, I was waiting for the bride and groom to kiss along with the parents during the "peace be with you" but for some reason they didn't! So to catch the moment, i just pressed the shutter with the focus still on the couple hehe (kesa hindi makuha!). So what i did was to darken the couple's side a bit to put emphasis on the parents kissing, hehehe i need to practice more on quick shots and composition!
What i noticed with events photography, the photog has to be very quick in all aspects or else the moment will just pass. Unlike in landscape & portrait there is more time to compose the shot, check the lighting, etc. Also, my lens (canon kit lens 18-55 and canon 75-300) take quite a long time to autofocus, sometimes the moment passes while im waiting to the lens to focus. Is this normal for non-usm lens?
You're also right about the aisle not centered, its slightly twisted! Just a question, for super wide shots, do you usually check for symmetry and balance while looking in the viewfinder to take a perfect shot, or do trial and error, or do you edit after? Since using the camera's small LCD, its quite hard to review the details.
Thanks so much, this is a big help! :)
Ems Chua 05-06-2007, 03:21 PM congrats on your first wedding shoot.
but.
1.) under exposed?
2-5.) blurred? under exposed, no flash?
sorry, but, post process did more harm than help imho.
with weddings, we all try to 'get it right' the first time, kasi its super fast, there's no such thing as 'rewind' :)
with wide angle lenses, like the first pic, it would be nice kung nasa center na center ka, para yun mga lines mag converge sa middle.
cheers! happy shooting. :)

Ric Manzano 05-09-2007, 04:52 AM Hi Richard.
I love the way you position yourself to get the shots. Maganda ang idea mo. you can think of where and when to take good shots. You just have to know how.
Im a newbie too. Thats a fact. but before you practice on this things on real time subjects. try to visit this site..http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/enjoydslr/index.html
it will help you on the know-how basis.
Then go to your garden or patio (whenever your dog is) then practice shooting your pet. Your pet tends to move unpredicably so you can practise shooting events like weddings (moving in a fast pace unpredicably).
Try shooting on full auto mode muna. so you will know the almost perfect setting you need. And from that try the program mode. adjusting the iso, wb and so fort.
dont be afraid on using full auto on events kung di ka pa sanay. study from this shots.
try also to shoot your electric fan(while running on the fastet speed) in different lightings and different settings. you learn from it. differetiate all the shots you have made and compare to the ones you like (or that turn out to be the good shots).
a dslr has about 10 to 12 settings (from full auto to manual to landscape to sports mode) try all of this in one subject and compare. do this first before adjusting the shutter speed, aperature et al... so you would experience the difference of each settings.
remember this... if your subject is in stationary or non living things, you have all the time you want to take the shot until the shot suffice you. you can thinker more with your camera. BUT! if your subject is moving on a fast pace, you dont control the time. you have to be ready in an instant (full auto will help a little bit) once it moves, that precise moment is gone. pag medyu pro na tayu, pwede na i- manual (kasi experience na)
next time may EB, sali kaw. masaya at matututo ka.
Happy shooting bro.
Ric Manzano 05-09-2007, 05:09 AM syanga pala. this is the church where i got married too. so i know di pwede basta basta lumapit sa subject. (ayaw ng church officers daw. me accreditation pa nga nun with photographers eh). with that...try to get zoom lens. the sigma 18 to 200mm is a good choice. one lense, two purpose (wide and zoom). mura pa. hihihihi.
