View Full Version : Help! Canon 350 D telephoto / lens and flash
Owen Buhay 07-25-2006, 12:36 PM Hi Guys,
Just a new a member here. Need your advice because I'm going to buy a Telephoto / lens for my Canon 350D. Need your advice on what's the best lens and flash to pair with my Canon. I'm planning to use it to our dogs because we are in to dog showing.
Hope to hear from you. Thanks.
Owen
dave_deluria 07-25-2006, 12:50 PM Hmmm simple enough.
On a budget... 50mm 1.8 + 430EX.
With a bit more budget... 85mm 1.8 + 430EX
With sky-high budget... 85mm 1.2 + Small Studio Lighting gear.
Oh.. don't forget a tripod. ANY tripod works wonders if you can make the extra effort.
Good Luck!
Owen Buhay 07-25-2006, 12:55 PM Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply. Any idea how mich are the cost of these lens / flash? I've also heard that the 2.8L with 17-200 range with macro lens is good? Any idea how much is this and how it performs?
Owen

Of course, if such a product even exists. You will nary find a superzoom with F2.8 aperture.
The budget recommendation will set you back 20k.
The bit more budget is around 30k
The sky-high one is .... sky high (estimate around US$2000)
john_javellana 07-25-2006, 03:45 PM hmm i'm not really keen on "dog shooting" (hehe) but my picks for telephoto and flash, not necessarily in accordance with your purpose are the 70-200mm f/2.8 USM (the non-IS is fine with me :D) and of course the trusty 580EX. well of course that's when you have the budget but i don't think anybody would disagree with those two performance-wise. :)

christopher cortez 07-25-2006, 04:33 PM if youre into dog showing i guess there are times that you do it indoors?
if these shows happen outside in bright daylight then a 70-200 f4L would be perfect. a sigma apo dg might be your cheap alternative.
if its inside you have to cough out more money for the 2.8L or the sigma 2.8. the L would cost you 65k the sigma would be around 35k i guess.
im assuming you also would need to stop motion.
Owen Buhay 07-27-2006, 01:04 AM Hi guys,
Thanks for those nice advises. Yesterday we decided to get 70-200 f4L USM, 17-85mm IS USM and 430EX flash. What do you think of these?
christopher cortez 07-27-2006, 07:44 AM you might end up using your f4L more hehehe :)
congratz on the new gear....
Michael Kaamino 07-27-2006, 08:01 AM well you are really covered for each situation (except for really macro stuff), nice gear!!
Reyno Rosete 07-27-2006, 08:44 AM Hi guys,

Congrats!!! That's a very versatile combo for what you do. The 17-85 is a great walk around lens and the 70-200 is one of the sharpest in Canon's inventory. Enjoy and happy shooting. Now if we can see some test shots please hehehe....

Hi, i'm also new here and I was looking for a 2.8L. The 70-200 2.8L costs around 90k at Hidalgo. What shop sells them for 65k? Thanks.
dave_deluria 08-10-2006, 10:50 AM 65k is roughtly the price of the 70-200 non IS version. The 90k + price is probably for the version with IS.
ANGELO SANTOS 08-17-2006, 10:49 PM yup, dave, those are the prices, respectively. i bought mine (The IS ver) @ 100K. waahh! (sa mall kasi eh!) :)
