View Full Version : my 1st try on wedding photography...

a few months back my wife and I had this conversation:
(transcribed in english)

mrs: dear, i have news fo you...
me: u-huh
mrs: one of my closest friends called me and told me that she got engaged and asked me to be her 'matron of honor' and keisha will be one of the flower girls...
me: really? wow, that's great. can you ask her if I could take some pirtures, or if she can ask the photographer if i can take some shots for personal use?...
mrs: oh yeah, you'll be covering the event

pause...a moment of silence...pause

me: says who?..
mrs: me! it's about time you try covering a wedding
me: what!!!, wedding photography is a whole different ballgame, its portraiture, fashion, product, food etc. in a single event that if we mess it up it might involve a lawsuit...it's not like the past jobs we did for our friends...
mrs: i know you can do it, ive seen your work!!! (note that this is the opinion of my wife who loves me very much, and does not reflect the opinion of the general public):)

i then headed off to my small office turned on the PC then called for my wife to view DPP with me.

me: here's DPP's wedding thread, look at all the excellent work the pro photographers share in this forum (oh yeah sir Lito and sir Dino, my wife loves your works)
mrs: ah basta it's up to you, there's no harm in trying, and besides the only guarantee I gave my friend is that you would do your best...

so here's my first try on wedding photography

am still to show the newlyweds the photos we took, so I have no idea what to expect...i really hope and pray that they will like them, well will have to PP a lot of images.

oh yeah, we did the coverage with the help of very experienced sub-contractors, and I did asked them to sign a release form for the images.

thank you to all the people who have willingly and freely shared their knowledge on the wedding forum here in DPP. I owe it to you guys.:)
oh and i ran out of poses mid-shoot (should have studied more on that). hopefully I could do some more so as to develop my own style in wedding photography.

the experience was really worth it, a lot of pressure, fun, and more pressure.:)

uy thank you Joel, grabe it's definitely an experience, do try it!:) some sleepless nights and on the day of the shoot, my hands were shaking. and joel guess what, i used my 'K' lens, on most of my shots, roughly 90%.

hey nino, its pretty well done, the pictures i mean, except the last, looks slightly blurred :D you did pretty well. :)

thank you ms. ems, hope you don't mind borrowing your 'rings' concept, yeah the last pic is blurry, i was thinking of setting up my tripod, but went against it cause of time constraints. still hoping to get a clear shot of this image while I PP the rest of the images.:)

Hi Nino,

What can I say....not bad at all for a first timer. The lighting of the "prenup" shots is quite harsh and you can see it in their expression...you did a much better job with the exposure and lighting on the wedding photos. The bride holding the gown to her face looks like she is wiping her face with it.... over all though, I am sure that they will be pleased.

Just my opinion:)

thank you ms. pilar. and again thank you for the tip.:) the pre-nup shots was taken at 4pm on a clear afternoon sky ( i forgot to bring a reflector ). all ambient light on the bridal prep (don't really know how to call it ) shots, adjusted the room curtains to control the amount of light.
with the pose, tried experimenting on different poses, and thought of this pose of the bride feeling the softness of the fabric. ( i was looking for any fashion magazine at this point cause i was running out of ideas for poses). learned a lot from the experience, and looking forward to learn more from the pros here in DPP.

i really hope they like it and im definitely getting a graphic artist to do the final album layout.

Wow! K Lens yun? Buti ka pa you already tried the first steps im sure given time, training and more exposure in wed p. you will get away with it...Sarap ng experience when you started from scratch...maximizing with what you have...Learn from Ms. Pilar Tuason and some of the pros and non pro here in DPP with their encouragement and comments it will boost up your confidence to try to the next level....Congrats Nino!!!!!:)

Wow, Nino, Congrats for a VERY GOOD JOB on your first try. I remember I singlehandedly covered the wedding shoot for the secretary of my mom way back the early 90's and what a stressful first time it was for me (film pa ang gamit ko with only two cameras for the entire shoot). Grabe, that's why I admire wedding photographers, the pressure and the stress they face is too much for me.:RedEye: Pang "Ninong" role na lang ako sa mga weddings. :(

Nino, if you don't mind, I'd like to make a minor suggestion for this shot. If you could've moved the cord and the rings a little higher to make the names of the couple more visible and clear, then for me it would have been apropos to the poetry of the image. Just my OC comment.

@aly, hehe it was an experience i would certainly never forget. have some shots na of the rings on the invitation na mas clearer yung names. would most probably have that one included on the final layout instead. i agree with you Hats off talaga ako sa mga wedding photographers.:)

see you guys on wed. balik food tayo. hehe

@nino, you made that first foray and i congratulate you for it. i think madali lang mag-uzi ng wedding photo coverage until one tries it him/herself (i tried to dabble in it for a pre-nup and it was a lot harder than it looks). ma'am pilar and father aly (joke lang sir!) already gave very noteworthy comments earlier so i'll restrain myself from echoing their post, other than siguro a bit of postp to soften the sharp edges on some images. that and pat on the back na lang bro :)

@inigo - thanks bro, will see you tom.:)

@oliver - thanks, gor youe PM

@ oggie - thanks bro, yeah wedding photography is indeed a challenge. and of course i always appreciate all the comments, cause that's why i shared them here siyempre to learn and absorb as much as i can, so 'if' there's a next time I know what to do and try to do a better job.:) when's our next photo op? hehe

@tracy - thanks tracy, I hope I could do another one in the future, used my trusty kit lens on 90% of the shots (its the widest glass I have) and my tamron 80-210 F4.5-5.6. lights in the pre-nup and bridal preparation are all ambient or natural light and 2 tungsten bulbs during the night pictorial.:)
after the wedding I asked my wife if I could get a 24-70 2.8 L, approval still pending. hehe

Nino! What can I say? Congrats for making that first step! Like what you said, it's your first. I am sure that if you continue to shoot and read and learn from others here, you'll start to hone those "wedding" shooting nuances to get all aspects of the event down pat.

What would be admirable in these type of coverage is the logistical play, and millions of things in your mind going on while you are shooting. Why don't you enumerate them, so others would learn. And I am sure the seasoned pro's can pitch in their valuable insights.

Keep it up.:)

Hi Nino,

Wedding is a nice genre to hone your skills in all aspects of photography. I am sure since you are starting you tried to play safe and ensure that you capture most of the images in traditional form as they unfold. As you go along try to do different things, experiment, change your angle of view, etc.

Very good start. Keep it up.
