My personal choice would be the sigma 24-135mm f2.8-4.5, its gives you a wider aperture opening, another though for some it isn't a factor is that you can focus faster when you have a smaller focal length range.
The sigma 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 would be good for beginners though especially if you have bugetary constriants, it offers a wider focal length range and if you are using a DSLR, some have multipliers as high as 1.6 the 18mm would be helpful when you are trying to shoot at wide angles.

I really like 18-200 sigma lens as it is very good as an all-around lens. The quality is superb considering the price. If you want to travel light, then it's a perfect lens. I've seen some wedding photographers use this as thier only lens and they do deliver great shots.

have the sigma 18-200 and it delivers as a walk around travel lens. don't expect sharpness and fast silent focus though. an added bonus is its 1:4 macro. if you're ready to accept it as the price dicates it, you won't be bothered. as they say, you get what you pay for. otherwise, check out their other models.
my copy exhibits softness @ the extremes eg. 18mm and 200mm @ f/3.5. stopped down to f/5.6-f/8, it provides pleasing results with my d200. right now, i only have a nikkor 50mm f/1.8 and this lens.

i have a 18-200, it is best used outdoor.
it needs wider opening indoors. but flash can compensate the light restrictions.
soft on the tele side.

i have a tamron 18-200, the IQ is decent, far from what i expected reading the various net reviews. although there are those that did cite that the IQ is good enough.
i use this as my walk around lens during the day, well i would use this coz ive only had it like a week and used it once for a workshop but the image quality was surprising.
for low light scenarios i have a tamron 28-75 2.8 again the quality is superb specially considering the price tag on it.
so you can try those 2 lenses out and see if they fit your style and budget. the 18-200 should set you back 22k so will the 28-75 i think if they are both bought brand new. second hand market will bring your price point lower and very affordable.
