For those doing mountaineering and photography, guys, how do you pack up especially with both climbing and photo gear?

When I did Mt. Pulag, protection was the order of the day:D , during the climb, and when trekking, shooting would be unavoidable. you want your gear and bag to have quick draw for opportunity shots, and quick cover in the event it rains, or if you fall, or if you need your hands to support yourself while climbing trees, there's just too much to be careful about.

If you have a porter, then make sure your bag is durable, because believe me, they will assume that your bag is bullet proof. they will knock it around.:(

I cannot tell you what gear to bring, as this will be dictated by; where you are going, how long you are staying, your style of shooting, and your capacity to carry. I am sure you know what you need.

Lots of batteries for cold places where charging will not be available. Large zip-lock bags for emergency cover of lens, body and memory cards. And better if you have fresh dry towels inside the zip lock bag (effective during rainy season).

Hope this helps.

Hi Estan. Let me share with you my experience. Ive been climbing and taking pictures at the same time.

Preparation is very important and always anticipate your climb. I carry with me my Canon 350D and 18-55 kit lens when I climb mountains. Canon 350D is lighweight and ideal for mountaineers. The kit lens is just as useful when taking landscape pictures. And of course a polarizing filter is a must for any outdoor photographer.

For crossing rivers/shooting the rapids/waterfalls shots.

1. Always anticipate rain and water when climbing. Camera protection is a must.

2. Always carry a monopod or tripod for stability.

3. Bring a small umbrella.

This will protect your camera when viewing your subject. Take for example shooting
waterfalls and when it rains.

4. Bring extra plastic bags.

The purpose of which is for double protection for your photo equipments. Always
keep ur camera inside a plastic before you place it inside your camera bag/
beltbag.

We always secure our packs with large plastic bags inside for waterproofing just in case we need to cross rivers.

5. Bring a raincoat.

For normal climb---major or minor mountains... be sure to do the same. Be prapared and practice LNT, the Leave No Trace principle.

linus! andito ka pala. good points bro. kung di lang nga mahal ang pelican hardcase, ok sana. ziploc bags na doble-doble ang best friend ko sa bundok. it saved my p&s camera nang malublob kami sa pasig-potrero river papuntang pinatubo. the ziplocs are also camera savers kasi ma-hamog sa itaas ng bundok. i also agree with derick that you can stash your memory cards, other electronics sa ziploc so it pays to bring extras. ok yung plug mo sa lnt, bow ako dun.
