All work and no play make a grown man a dull boy.

Growing up as a quiet boy in simple surroundings,
Arvin Javier, a graduate of the Technological
University of the Philippines, did not have any toys
to play with. As a consequence of that childhood
memory, for his art, he produces toys. But not the
usual toys that a kid would normally take a liking to.
Or the type that parents would give their brood on
Christmas day. With Pop Art and Dadaism as an
influence, and with such artists as Paul Klee and
Rauchenberg as idols, he fuses together sculpture and
toys to form works of art that are all their own.
Thus, for his first major show, on view at OWG from
August 1 to 16, he chose the title All work and no play
make a grown man a dull boy.


Each of this works—created using stencils, sprays,
markers, pens and other odds and ends that he can get
his hands on—are reflections of a inner torment
waiting to explode; an emotion long stifled by his
strict Catholic upbringing and a conservative family
environment. Part graffiti, part installation, part
mixed media; these works are unique in that while they
are toys, attempting to classify them into something
specific would be difficult if not unnecessary.
