View Full Version : Print Sizes?

I'm a bit of a noobie when it comes to photography so I have a couple of questions for all of you.

1) What are the physical dimensions of all those different 'R' sizes (e.g., 3R, 5R, 8R)? I tried googling for a couple minutes and no easy results popped up--maybe I don't know enough terminology to find a good table that gives me the sizes or maybe the dimensions are so easy to remember that no one has even bothered to write them down before (5R being 5x7<--lucky guess).

2) What's the largest dimension that most print shops usually provide? I checked out DigiPrints (http://www.digiprint.com.ph/), and according to their "pricing" page, they offer up to 8R. Now in some DigiPrint PRO threads I've seen people speaking of 10R+ sizes. Was I hallucinating? Or are larger dimensions offered?

So why am I asking these questions? Although not a photographer, I am heavily involved with graphic design . . . printing the occasional Tabloid poster (11" x 17") and regular A4 fliers. For convenience I've been going to XPRINT (Market! Market!) and printing my 11x17 posters there. Unfortunately I'm not too happy with the quality of the prints: black not really black, colors not really true, and most annoyingly, the look of "ink-blotting" when carefully looking at the blacks (some parts blacker than others, eh?). I’m also interested in printing even larger posters but I do not know where or how I am do to this; when it comes to prints of this size, however, quality isn’t as much as an issue.

So my other question:

3) Is it recommendable for me to print my projects (Advertisement Posters, specifically) at DigiPrint (PRO) or other photography print shops? I'm looking for quality and my logic tells me that I'll find it there. What will the costs be? I pay 90P for an 11x17 tabloid print at XPRINT.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Is it possible for me to get a prices for each of the dimensions seeing as the website isn't updated yet? You can PM me it or I'll just make my way to the nearest branch.

Hi Miguel,

a friend of mine wants copies of a couple of my photos for their house. do you guys also offer framing services? also, are there different kinds of materials used for printing photos or is it all standard? since i don't have any experience with printing, will your staff help out optimizing the photo for printing? what's the typical process?

sorry for the barrage of questions

Nick - We do have some frames in our branches but the are limited to smaller sizes and they are standard frames. If they want to frame you pictures for their house, I suggest you bring them to a place that specializes in frames.

Re the printing - materials are all the same its just th finish that is diferent (matte-glossy-mettalic-linen etc...) Our associates in the branch will help you and advise whats the best size for the file size you have.

Hope I answered your questions :)

thanks - i think they had bigger sizes in mind, so i'll take your advice and check out specialized framing shops for that.

i'll be sure to give one of your branches a visit for these jobs. thanks!

i've tried digiprint pro and i'm really happy with the quality of the photo.

but there is one observation.. in dpi kasi they crop my photo to exactly 4x6. but for digiprint pro when i resized my photographs at exactly 4x6, i saw that some cropping has occurred in the print..

sir miguel or anybody.. will you be so kind to provide the exact size for the print so that no cropping from the lab will occur? thank you!

If you re size your photo to 4x6 there shouldnt be any cropping

If your instructions were not to touch the file then maybe the resolution of your file was not the same printer resolution, thus cropping the image. Your resolution should be at 300 ppi to match the Noritsu machine. A file larger than 300 ppi will print larger thus cropping your image. A file smaller than 300 ppi will print smaller leaving a white border.

ria can you send me the file thru email?

sir, i emailed the image to you. what happened is that i lost about 2mm on the right side. it might be a little insignificant for bigger photographs but it's quite evident in this specific print because i made a montage.. since the images are small, the loss is quite noticeable..

my image is 1800x1200 (or 6x4) @ 300ppi.

What am I doing up so late? Printing. I just finished a rush job of photos that I have to send out of the country. I am now backing up my files on DVDs and mulling whether to purchase a Macbook Pro that was offered to me :D

I'll resume printing soon. I have some personal shots that I want to display at my studio and house.

BTW, the latest ICC profiles you sent will be added to my seminar CD for this month.

Thanks for sending me those ICC profiles.
