if for diving i strongly support eric's big no.
neil.castano 04-10-2007, 10:35 PM if your into diving you should get a housing that is more durable like the following brands.
1. www.patimahousing.com (http://www.patimahousing.com)
2. www.ikelite.com (http://www.ikelite.com)
3. www.seaandsea.jp/index.html (http://www.seaandsea.jp/index.html)
4. www.subal.com (http://www.subal.com)
350D housing is now cheaper compared to newer models.
if you intend to shoot just to protect your unit on rainy days then get the Ewa-Marine U-AXP100 Underwater Housing.
both eric and jonix are correct, we need to know your main purpose randy.
randy_cabangon 04-11-2007, 10:11 PM Thanks for the quick reply guys.
Anyway, i'm was planning to do i little bit of everything (snorkling, diving, kayak etc) coz me and my wife are planning a trip to palawan. So, should i just ditch my 350d (leave it at the resort) and just buy this na lang for my wifes canon ixus 55 so we can take it diving, etc?

I just find it impractical to buy a US$1500 casing for my US$500 camera. hehehe So i figured the Ewa-Marine was a good alternetive.
Has anyone had experience with the ewa-marine with his/ her dslr? Were there bad experiences?
Additional question: what's a good lens to use for underwater photography? i've read in another thread that it's the canon 10-22mm.
Adrien Uichico 04-12-2007, 09:13 AM hi randy, i think if its for all around it would be better to just buy a housing for the ixus, if you decide to get a patima let me know:) if its for underwater you can opt for the macro lenses or the wide lenses...but then thats a whole different story since you will need strobes, arms etc.
Derick_Gamboa 04-12-2007, 09:25 AM I have the EWA Marine, but never dared bringing it under water with the 1Dsmk2. As what everyone has said, I would not dare do that. I bought and use the EWA like a rain coat for the 1D body. I like shooting while in banca's, speed boats, banana boats, jet skis, and it really prevents water getting in. That's all. Its not for shoots that would require you to keep changing lenses also. Too much work, and the possibility of getting sand and water spray in is still there if you keep opening it.
randy_cabangon 04-12-2007, 03:06 PM AW MAN! Was excited pa naman to bring down my cam. Can you suggest other brands of underwater casings within the US$500 range that can be used for diving... if there are any...
Jonix Aguirre 04-12-2007, 03:13 PM ask adrien, maybe he has sources for sub $1000 housings. if you get one for the dslr you would have to get a tray, arms, strobes and ports na.
randy_cabangon 04-12-2007, 03:27 PM Hahaha HOLY SH@T! that's what i'm afraid of. daming "anak-anak" na gear if you you buy an underwater casing.
Maybe i'll just stick to diving and just leave the photography to the pros... hehehe
Parang i'm leaning on just buy the casing for my wifes ixus.... at least cheaper pa.
caloy_samson 04-12-2007, 03:42 PM it is cheap until you want to put in some light to your pix:)
randy_cabangon 04-14-2007, 09:04 PM Thanks guys for you help. Ordered the casing for the ixus already.
Cheers!
dr.mark.dimalanta 04-14-2007, 11:39 PM its an affordable option and it takes great underwater pics. it retails for 260.00 USD at B&H and also works as an excellent pocket digicam.
here is a link to some of my pics:

well if you already ordered the casing for your canon pocket cam, i think that will work fine. but if you ever need an underwater pocket cam, i would opt for the pentax optio w30. they are really fun to use!
happy shooting,
mark
ps: i used an ewa marine case for my film slr's back in college and they are a bit awkward to use. for my present underwater and splash proof use, i use SPL water housings for my pentax SLR's. sean la brie at SPL makes them for all makes, canon, nikon, and pentax.

eric_javier 04-15-2007, 03:15 PM I just find it impractical to buy a US$1500 casing for my US$500 camera. hehehe
I think this is a good advice. Don't Invest to the expensive equipment, especially if your using it ONCE A YEAR or during diving trip only... Now if your a DiveMaster or Diving Instructor and you have a lot of opportunity to dive then go a head invest up to $6,000 or more....
Housing for your ixus will be fine as long as you remember that "Dont bring it more than 130 feet"
Have Fun and share some of your pix after your vacation..
randy_cabangon 04-16-2007, 02:32 PM Thanks eric! I ordered the housing for my wife's ixus but i'm still tempted in buying the ewa for my 350d! Arrrg! i hope i'm not becoming a gear head! hehehe

just get it!
randy_cabangon 04-18-2007, 08:45 PM didn't get the casing for my 350d. i just ordered a canon 24-70 f2.8L! YAHOO!!! :)
jose_deluna 04-18-2007, 09:01 PM Housing for your ixus will be fine as long as you remember that "Dont bring it more than 130 feet"
Who's diving deeper than 130ft? That's no recreational diving anymore. With a single tank, you won't even stay at that depth for 10 minutes. Also, the beautiful and colorful corals are found on shallower portions... more light too!
The IXUS with a casing would suffice. Added treat is that you get the chance to shoot videos too, which a dSLR cannot do. It's a different league watching underwater videos compared to underwater still photos only.
