View Full Version : D70/D70s Successor Is Coming
gerry_dulay 07-20-2006, 06:47 PM There's a countdown running on the Nikon Imaging global site: http://nikonimaging.com/global/index.htm
The teaser says:
More power
More control
More versatile
More excitement
Next Nikon
New 10.2 megapixel D-SLR addition to the lineup
Integrating quality and affordability to meet the demands of passionate photo enthusiasts
Is this the D80? :)
caloy_samson 07-20-2006, 07:19 PM you forget...more drooling:Grin:
Carlo R. Lopez 07-20-2006, 08:06 PM yeah i saw that one too. i expect a lot of d70s to go on sale once its formally announced.
levi lacandula 07-20-2006, 08:47 PM made my heart beat faster... more NAS!!!
hmm....but a silver shutter button??!?
Aris Guerrero 07-20-2006, 09:39 PM haay, i just hope that it has an optional vertical grip
Niko Villegas 07-21-2006, 02:16 AM yeah i saw that one too. i expect a lot of d70s to go on sale once its formally announced.
id probably keep mine and save up for the new one or a D200 hehehe  heck as long as it's got my name (minus the N) on it, it's good :)
tj_parpan 07-21-2006, 10:35 AM I have a funny feeling I'll be selling my D70 late this year to get this as a 2nd body to my D200. To now have two 10.2MP cameras makes for more consistent image managment for me. Malamang NAS lang ito.
willy_palacios 07-21-2006, 10:37 AM ...do you guys think that Nikon will ever realease a Body with built in VR/IS/AS?
dindin_lagdameo 07-21-2006, 10:57 AM @TJ
definitely a NAS... i think i shall join you in this path... ;-)
tj_parpan 07-21-2006, 11:02 AM ...do you guys think that Nikon will ever realease a Body with built in VR/IS/AS?
VR is available in-body for the Coolpix series. It seems unlikely that the DSLRs will have built in VR since all the high-end long primes and telephotos have VR. And that's what partly puts them in the $5000 to $7000 range.
Come to think of it, even the newer lenses have VR, namely the 18-200 and 105 macro. The new 70-300 is also supposed to have VR.
With all that VR technology invested in the lenses, it doesn't seem likely then to have in-body VR.
But technology and trends always have a funny way of surprising us.
Possibilty: Nikon launches a prosumer DLSR with built in VR catering to the market who want to use non-VR lenses.
tj_parpan 07-21-2006, 11:04 AM @TJ
definitely a NAS... i think i shall join you in this path... ;-)
But after buying a D200 early in the year and literally paying the price for it, I will wait for when the avaiability and prices stabilize!
neil.castano 07-21-2006, 02:10 PM bago lang ang D70s ko....pero i dont mind kung meron new model na lalabas within 19 days..... quote ko lang sinabi ng isang member "more pixels will not make you a better photographer" kaya shoot lang tayo ng shoot. http://www.pinoyphotography.org/forum/Smileys/default/wink.gif
Vince_Villamin 07-21-2006, 02:52 PM I agree with TJ, the D200 is to the D2X/s what the F100 was to the F5. That being said, the D70/s isn't that far behind, let's all hope that the newest addition is a good improvement on what is already a good product. An improvement for me would be better low noise performance, ala Fuji S3 and CAM1000 AF Module. That would be it, Fuji IQ with Nikon speed/ergonomics. More pixels aren't really necessary, 6MP is good enough for me.
Vince_Villamin 07-21-2006, 02:54 PM Sori should've checked out the link first. 10.2 Megapixels are good :)
rosalie_gomez 07-21-2006, 04:08 PM I have a funny feeling I'll be selling my D70 late this year to get this as a 2nd body to my D200. To now have two 10.2MP cameras makes for more consistent image managment for me. Malamang NAS lang ito.
Hahaha! And here I was 2nd guessing the timing of my purchase.
rosalie_gomez 07-21-2006, 04:13 PM But after buying a D200 early in the year and literally paying the price for it, I will wait for when the avaiability and prices stabilize!
That's ok... as long as the camera is still with you, then no realized loss. Hehehe! But you're right, better to wait, it does take a couple of months after the initial release before the price stabilizes.
jerome pagunsan 07-22-2006, 02:28 PM D80 is coming to town... if there is a little diff. in price between D80 and D200. No doubt i will go for D200. But i think the price will be a little above D70s in order to irradicate the legendary D70 slowly in the market and setting up the new trend 10.2MP in D80. I will wait and see....
nino_carandang 07-22-2006, 08:18 PM will it be enough to match sony's alpha? currently researching if the sensor is the same.
joe_galian 07-22-2006, 10:46 PM This next Nikon might be a D200 in a plastic body with a metal chasis. If so then it's worth the successor.
levi lacandula 07-23-2006, 10:44 AM if its significantly has lower price than the D200 and offers a longer shutter life plus vertical grip - i think we have a winner here!
hopefully all these speculations are true
Louieescobar 07-23-2006, 11:35 AM The next nikon is the D80....:)
The price is around $1,300
levi lacandula 07-23-2006, 12:11 PM The next nikon is the D80....:)
if this is true... D200 is dead! hehehe
Marton_Benitez 07-23-2006, 12:22 PM Oh wow that's beautiful :O
caloy_samson 07-23-2006, 01:13 PM looks heavy and different...oh well, Dslr lust again if that is true.
ninja edit - looks like a photoshopped pic of a combined D70s/D200/D2x.
Louieescobar 07-23-2006, 08:49 PM Nikonians there is another Nikon DSLR Coming out aside from the D80....:D ...
My source told me that it's either the D80 or D90 that would come out 17days from now.
ian_santos 07-23-2006, 10:41 PM drool drool....just the right timing to move up from my D70 :)
gerry_dulay 07-24-2006, 06:14 PM Ummm ... don't both of those attached images look heavily photoshopped? And if the teaser is any indication, these images look off. The pentaprism bulge and popup flash look flat in the teaser, the ones in the photos have a peak. The shutter button area looks more like the D70's or the D50's, and there's no hint of a built-in vertical grip either.
Yeah, I've been pixel peeping too much. :D
Priced at $1300 ... so a Nikon DSLR for every budget, eh?
tj_parpan 07-25-2006, 06:50 AM Thom Hogan on http://www.bythom.com/ thinks that this is meant to be an addition to the lineup rather than a replacement to the D70s. He's guessing it at $999 and as a direct competitor to the Sony Alpha. Taken from his site:
"New Nikon Coming...
Well, I hypothesized that Nikon must be getting ready to ship a new consumer DSLR when I saw Nikon's estimated shipments of DSLRs for the first half of their current fiscal year. And it seems that I was right. Just in time for my birthday, Nikon is teasing a new consumer camera with a Flash animation on their Web site. Salient information: "More power. More control. More versatile. More excitement. New 10.2 megapixel D-SLR addition to the lineup." (The Japanese version is a little different, and seems to suggest that the camera is "faster," as well.)
A couple things to note: "addition to the lineup." That means it isn't a D70s replacement, but likely a D80 (or whatever number they come up with) that slots between the two existing 6mp cameras and the 10.2mp D200, both in features and price (best guess, US$999 body). "Details will be announced [in] 20 days." Given when the teaser first appeared, that means the target announcement date (not ship date) is August 9th or so.
The more interesting thing than the camera, whatever it turns out to be, is that this is the first time in my memory that Nikon has clearly executed a marketing campaign targeted at a competitor. The teaser appears just as the 10.2mp Sony Alpha 100 is about to appear in stores here. Hmm. Can Nikon marketing really be stepping up to the plate for a change?"
We'll see in a few weeks... exciting!
Niko Villegas 07-26-2006, 01:35 PM http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/obsolescence.htm (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/obsolescence.htm)
check the link out maybe it will help some of us feel better hehehe
nino_carandang 07-26-2006, 01:41 PM it seems like nikon is stepping up the plate as tj said in the previous post.. but i'm more concerned if the local distributor step up the plate as well. or remain in the shadows as they have in the past.
i am hypothesizing that nikon will most likely go head to head with sony's alpha as thom hogan mentioned. again, in the local scenario, will the now "restructuring" columbia global be able to counter sony philippines new flagship dslr. i guess we will find out soon enough.
nolan_empalmado 07-26-2006, 02:22 PM yes that would be interesting considering that sony has a pretty solid distribution and service network already due largely to their consumer electronics business.
gerry_dulay 07-26-2006, 11:31 PM As with the D200, Nikon shoot themselves in the foot by 'leaking' pictures of the new DSLR on their own site. Some dedicated people found direct access URLs to release images of what is apparently the Nikon D80.
Read it first in NikonCafe, then found this link in DPReview forums: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1034&thread=19344949
These photos are direct from Nikon Europe and may disappear soon.

Did you notice:
* FUNC button
* Extra top button
* Main LCD looks like it's from the D200
* Top LCD looks small like with the D70/D70s/D50
* SD Card slot like on the D50
levi lacandula 07-27-2006, 12:11 AM well i guess im sticking with my D70s.... since Nikon shifted to using SD cards for their latest camera ..
dont want to invest in a new mem format :D
dave_deluria 07-27-2006, 12:29 AM The images can be found when I did a flickr search (http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=all&q=nikon+d80&m=text).

Good news! You can stick to your plan... Hehehe :D I wonder why Nikon is going the route of using 2 different types of memory card.

surprisingly, no movement yet int he prices...
classmate, another d70s this cmas? or d200?
hmmm... thats a tough one.... would love to have a D200 but dont think i'll have enough dough by then.... hahaha
lets see.. i'll definitely inform you:)
caloy_samson 07-27-2006, 11:13 AM The D200 EB is scheduled in July 2007..we still have time Levi.:)
rosalie_gomez 07-27-2006, 12:28 PM is that a 2.5 inch LCD screen i see on the d80?
Yup, sure looks like it. :)
christopher cortez 07-27-2006, 12:37 PM nice. wifey is gonna go gaga over that screen then.....thanks rosalie.
dindin_lagdameo 07-27-2006, 01:33 PM @christopher
just wondering... why aren't you using a Nikon?
levi lacandula 07-27-2006, 02:11 PM The D200 EB is scheduled in July 2007..we still have time Levi.:)
@ caloy
hahahaha... yep save up! save up! save up!
hopefully the D200 users now would still have their units by then... they might be using D400!

Hahaha! But seriously, no need for a model-specific EB, basta NIKON!!! :D
dindin_lagdameo 07-27-2006, 03:52 PM @rosalie
I agree... kahit PS, basta Nikon...
caloy_samson 07-27-2006, 04:05 PM electric fan po? :)
dindin_lagdameo 07-27-2006, 04:17 PM @caloy
please bring it for verification of qualification... no fan, no entry... ;-)
caloy_samson 07-27-2006, 04:20 PM has a built in monopod po.
nap_alcedo 07-27-2006, 05:46 PM Hey guys, KEN ROCKWELL (http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/d80.htm) just posted the most probable successor to the D70S. D200 owners do not have to worry. You guys are in a different league.
Nap
rosalie_gomez 07-27-2006, 06:02 PM @Nap
If that's accurate, then I think it will be another bestseller from Nikon. Priced at $900? That's $100 less than my guess. Hehehe! On the downside, it really does look like it will be using SD and not CF cards. :( Good news for D50 users but bad news for all other Nikon users.
tj_parpan 07-27-2006, 07:33 PM I'm going to wait a bit after this comes out, but the SD is a real downside for me...
vince_sanga 07-27-2006, 10:23 PM Coming from a D70 and now a D50, seems that this will be a tough choice betweek a D200 or D80.
dave_deluria 07-27-2006, 10:46 PM Here's a theoretical question. If I was in the market for a Nikon body assuming both the D200 and D80 are in stock, what features of the D200 will I miss if I opt for a D80 instead?
Thanks!
rosalie_gomez 07-27-2006, 10:51 PM Here's a theoretical question. If I was in the market for a Nikon body assuming both the D200 and D80 are in stock, what features of the D200 will I miss if I opt for a D80 instead?
Thanks!
Honestly can't answer that till the official announcement. Everything now is speculative.
dindin_lagdameo 07-27-2006, 11:24 PM @dave
handling... looks like the D200 is really well-built...
the rest... we'll have to wait... for now, let's enjoy taking photographs... dave, doesn't this feel like the mac world?
joe_galian 07-27-2006, 11:34 PM As a pro, I would definitely miss the weather-proof body of the D200, if I had a D80. But Nikon cameras are well-built! My old D70 has been to many beaches, has been drizzled upon during many weddings, bumped and scraped upon! And I'm not the gentle-type when I hold cameras too.
My D70 only broke down last year due to the factory defective light metering chip...but not my original shutter mechanism yet. My actuations exceed 105K now!
There's a lot going for Nikon's alleged "amateur" cameras. The D200 is a better value for money compared to the sturdier D200.
But you get what you pay for.
dave_deluria 07-27-2006, 11:36 PM for now, let's enjoy taking photographs...
I would if the blasted weather would just give us a break!
rosalie_gomez 07-27-2006, 11:42 PM My D70 only broke down last year due to the factory defective light metering chip...but not my original shutter mechanism yet. My actuations exceed 105K now!
This is good news for Nikon users! I believe there is a thread here re shutter life. You should post your experience there. :)
levi lacandula 07-27-2006, 11:49 PM My actuations exceed 105K now!
wow!!!! thats durability for you..... considering Nikon positioned the D70/s as a hobbyist cam:Grin:
Niko Villegas 07-28-2006, 03:59 AM I'm going to wait a bit after this comes out, but the SD is a real downside for me...
i definitely agree with this, if the D80 would come out with a CF instead of and SD card, it really be a tough choice but then again, i don't the marketing guys would make money out of it and second i think Nikon too doesn't want to offend their oh so popular D200 market hehehe
joe_galian 07-28-2006, 09:55 AM If the D70 can take my beatings, then you can imagine what the D80 can do for you.
I'm a freelance & pro advertising/wedding photog so I bought the D70 kit at P75,000 when it first came out. That's why my actuations are such.
I can't belive the D80 will sell for $900 for the body!
JonDexterTan 07-29-2006, 06:58 AM if the new nikon uses the SD memory, then we're probably looking at the wrong line -- could be the D50s! hmmm... naah!
Niko Villegas 07-29-2006, 03:47 PM hahaha nice analysis hahaha just occured to me hahaha
Vince_Villamin 07-31-2006, 04:35 PM Doesn't really matter to me if it does come out with an SD card instead of CF. Right now SD cards are cheaper and just as fast as CF. 1 GB SD 133x Ridata card is only 1600 compared to 1800 1 GB 80x Ridata CF. Nikon Rules!!! hehehe :D

yup but it is kinda hard for us who already use CF, hehehe but as we all know that the CF is an industry standard

check the link out maybe it will help some of us feel better hehehe
I read the article by Ken Rockwell... Oo nga! :D
I guess it's like a cycle. If you always aspire to have the newest model, then prepare to be upgrading all the time.
Niko Villegas 08-02-2006, 04:06 AM yup and like he said, we should not sacrifice time and money to miss all those great shots just so because we are waiting for a new camera hehehe . . . so keep those shutter clicking! :)
Aris Guerrero 08-05-2006, 07:22 AM and it also comes with a new af-s 18-135 lens! yey! or so they say... :)
Niko Villegas 08-05-2006, 11:12 AM m stil saving up for a D200 hahaha :))
Melvin Vivas 08-05-2006, 11:26 PM Ken Rockwell has some info about this...

Aris Guerrero 08-09-2006, 10:13 AM and with vertical grip!!! woohoo!
Melvin Vivas 08-09-2006, 10:35 AM I wonder if it will use CF cards or SD as assumed earlier? Feature-wise, it seems that it's the D70s upgrade...
and with vertical grip!!! woohoo!
vernes_go 08-09-2006, 10:45 AM it will use SD as indicated from the link above. i'm not really sure the advantages and disadvantages of CF and SD but i prefer CF cards... don't know why :D
since the D80 uses SD, parang ayaw ko na sya!! i'd prefer the D200 cos it uses CF cards!! hehe :D

tj_parpan 08-09-2006, 12:03 PM No uppdate yet on the nikonimaging site, probably due to the time difference.
Since I haven't invested heavily on CF, getting SD cards for the D80 is not a problem for me (if and when I get a D80). :)
Francis Perez 08-09-2006, 12:10 PM tj? you will get a d80? i thought you would get another d200 :D
i was relieved to hear that the d80 will not upstage the d200 :D
but it is definitely better than the d70... id get it for the large lcd and the grip.
Mel Enriquez 08-09-2006, 12:13 PM No uppdate yet on the nikonimaging site, probably due to the time difference.

It will use SD. But now a grip can be attached to it. Will not work with older AI-S lenses. Many other stuff.
The question is price. My guess it is around U$800-850 body only.
And a bonus:

Thanks Mel. Tried your links but the Nikon Malaysia page opens but with no content.

Thanks Mel. Tried your links but the Nikon Malaysia page opens but with no content.
john_palafox 08-09-2006, 01:28 PM With the D80 using SD cards it would be practical for professionals to get the D50 as a backup body:)
Well, some say that SD cards could be the future as they are a lot smaller that CF cards. :)
tj_parpan 08-09-2006, 01:50 PM Well if you can read Japanese:

caloy_samson 08-09-2006, 03:44 PM Somehow I'm not that excited with the new D80...I'm still aiming for the D200.
vernes_go 08-09-2006, 03:59 PM i also still prefer the D200 just because it uses CF :D i really don't know why... hehe

So this means there's no longer anything holding you back (except the funding) if the D80 is already out of the bag.
Vince_Villamin 08-09-2006, 04:21 PM I think its a great step up from the D70. only 999 USD for the body on its debut, i think its great. I bought my D70 from B&H for 1299 USD with the kit lens and a free 1 GB sandisk extreme III around about 2 years ago.
Vince_Villamin 08-09-2006, 04:25 PM Check it out i got this from http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25412
11-area AF system with Wide-area Center Segment and Auto-area AF functions:Nikon’s Multi-CAM 2000 provides maximum flexibility and optimum performance under varied shooting situations. 11-area autofocus system features a cross-type sensor in the center, broad frame coverage, as well as class-leading low light detection and convenient AF-assist illuminator to aid in low-light conditions. New Wide Area AF option gives greater compositional freedom when shooting sports and action.
Vince_Villamin 08-09-2006, 04:33 PM must be a typo... I checked out the Nikon Digital Website and it stated that the D80 uses CAM 1000

The D200 will still have other advantages such as:
5fps
weather-sealed body
etc.
But the D80 still has a lot of great specs! Ideal partner to a D50 or D200!
For the D200, at least they share the same batteries.
levi lacandula 08-09-2006, 05:17 PM Somehow I'm not that excited with the new D80...I'm still aiming for the D200.
@ caloy
still focused on that huh.. hehehe
for me its a toss up between an extra D70s or an upgrade to D200 :)
jerome pagunsan 08-09-2006, 05:29 PM Yaayyyay! SD Card confirm na talaga.
Anyway D80 is abosolutely better than the legend D70/D70s except for the sync speed of D70. But i agree with Levi that D200 is the way to go. I'm aiming for that too. :-)
tj_parpan 08-09-2006, 05:48 PM I noticed that on the DPR hands-on preview that the IR remote icon is still there. I wonder if the IR remote of the D70 (ML-L3?) will work with the D80...
chewychua 08-09-2006, 05:52 PM maybe come december, it's going to be less than $900.... woohoo!
i wonder if D50 prices have gone down. I have the D70s and i had the D50 before... and the images from the D50 is (arguably) better....
and if the D80's images improve on the D70's.. oh boy...
JonDexterTan 08-09-2006, 05:54 PM chewy... take it easy boy! :D

Yes, it will, read it somewhere. The MC-DC1 remote cord of the D70s will work too with the D80.
Looks like you'll have a new back-up body before the year ends. :)

I hope 4 months is a good time for prices to stabilize. And I'll be going to Singapore in November! Aha-hay!
rosalie_gomez 08-09-2006, 06:30 PM @TJ
It's coming out September so hopefully in 2 months prices will stabilize and stocks won't be hard to come by. Wishful thinking? :D
JonDexterTan 08-09-2006, 06:35 PM almost like a child to the D200 and D50, i really like it!
caloy_samson 08-09-2006, 06:50 PM @Levi - yes bro...next mid-year yan. Lenses acquisition this year until next. Maybe put up a studio in two years time. Hobby lang Levi:).

Marton_Benitez 08-10-2006, 06:08 AM Wow, they look great :) Iso 125? wow :)
nolan_empalmado 08-10-2006, 08:42 AM interesting that they put d-lighting and b/w on cam for the d80. hmmm...tempting but i'm still aiming for either a d200 or a 28-70 hehehe.
