I consider myself very lucky to own this legendary lens. Definitely a keeper. In this thread, please post shots of your 70-200 in action!

I took these shots at the '06 Hobie Nationals in Taal Lake last February. Full gallery here. (http://www.photo.net.ph/thumbnails.php?album=2031)

This shot shows how radical the conditions were and hobies were capsizing left and right. I was on a speed boat with a D200 and the 70-200 on Active VR. I onlt had to toss less than 5% of the shots due to the focus being off. The boat was pitching and rolling like anything (think left-right-up-down) but Active VR saved the day.

@Belle: Thanks!
@Al: Thanks! That panning shot came from a very small percentage of keepers. It was based more on trial and error, wrong framing, and other skill related mistakes. The lens was perfect! But that one morning of practice did wonders for my panning technique.

That's why a monopod is useful... During the SEAGames, after 1-1/2 days of shooting, I started to feel the weight of the 70-200 so decided to use a monopod already. Big help! No doubt, I prefer shooting without it, easier to move around but when my arm started aching already, didn't really have a choice. :)

tj_parpan
06-16-2006, 09:30 PM
@archie, the 80-200 2.8 AF-D (push-pull and two touch version) is a great peace of glass. Ideal for low-light shooting and sharp
The 80-200 2,8 AF-S has the benefit of focusing faster. Check out a brief history of the 80-200/70-200 here: http://www.bythom.com/70200VRlens.htm

These are the prices more or less (c/o B&H) :)

Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 $1,635.00

Why do we see more of the AF-D version and not the AF-S version for sale though? Did the 70-200/2.8 VR kill it off? Is the 80-200/2.8 AF-D that good?

rosalie_gomez
06-16-2006, 10:09 PM
@gerry

The 80-200/2.8 AF-S was actually discontinued when Nikon released the 70-200/2.8 VR. Optically, these 2 lenses are suppose to be the same, there are some differences like VR, focal length,.... :) I believe Nikon decided to keep the 80-200/2.8 AF-D as an alternative given the price difference.

levi lacandula
06-16-2006, 10:21 PM
based from the reviews/actual user comments i read... the 80-200 AF-D / AF-S and 70-200 VR has virtually the same optics. so sharpness, color are basically the same.

i think the main different is the AF speed and handling.

i have my trusty 80-200 AF-D.. and i love it (even if it gives me back aches hehehehe).

tried the 70-200 of a friend... hands down super fast AF!!! and of course you can even shoot at 1/20 or 1/30 @ 200 VR on - no shake!!!

Not necessarily, the price difference between those 2 lenses is big, almost double. The price difference can easily go to another camera body or another lens. Remember, having the best equipment doesn't make one a better photographer.

My in-cam sharpening is +1 with the D200. I sharpened my bird shots in PS but those were either with the 70-200 or Tamron 200-500. My sports shots were as is, with no PS sharpening.

In actual weight, yes, the 70-200 VR is heavier than the 80-200 AF-D. :) But when carrying the lens, I have to agree the 70-200 VR feels lighter. Must have something to do with the design. I had an 80-200 AF-D a couple of years back and I found it too heavy but I don't feel the same way about the 70-200 VR.

yep, definitely its about the design. in paper 70-200 is heavier.. but look at its construction ("sexier" than the 80-200 - hard core metal!!)

i have the AF-D version... very very satisfied with it (SUPER SHARP even at wide open!!!)...but then again it gives me consistent back pains:(

nolan_empalmado
06-23-2006, 06:35 AM
maybe it has something to do do with the finish of the 70-200. the 80-200 has a very rough metal finish. sort of gives off the impression that the metal is heavy. while the 70-200 has a more sleek finish to it. in terms of actual feel of weight when handling, i can't really say as i only have the 80-200.

Hi TJ,

Nice shots. Are you having your 70-200mm AFS-VR f2.8 lens rented for say 2 to 3 hours only for a fashion show photoshoot? I've tried shooting with the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 prime lens with my Nikon D70 but it just couldn't perform like the Nikkor lens because it doesn't have the VR Function. I can invite you to the fashion show so that you can immediately go home with the lens after I take photos of my wife's designs. Your kind assistance is highly appreciated. If you do don't mind, I can also rent your D200 for maximum performance of the lens. I'd like to test drive the D200 and 70-200mm f2.8 Nikkor lens before I upgrade my equipment this month. Until then. Best Regards.

Great colors! I think one of the things you have to look for in a lens is the color it produces. I have tried out some some Sigma lenses(Canon mount) and the reason that stopped me from buying them is the poor color. Except for the 70-300 APO which is one of the best lens I ever had. It's just slow though.

So for a beginner, would you advise to get the 80-200 instead of the 70-200 VR? Considering that you're not into sports photography.

dear folks, am just new to photography, am planning to buy 1 good lens within the year, I am considering this 2.8 70 - 200, my question is - is it only good than the others because it can do 2.8 at all focal length? if i will use the higher apertures, will it just give me the same result as that of other lenses (using the same aperture and focal length)? lastly, please give me an idea how much is the reasonable (local) price for this lens ... thank you

It's one of Nikon's sharpest telephoto lenses, even wide open... :)

A brand new one might set you back around 80K Php. But it depends on the store.

sir, ive had a chance to try a number of tele zooms - and in general if you stop them down to f/8 and down you'll definitely get sharp images. whats wonderful about this glass is that even at wide open its razor sharp. another thing to consider when you're comapring it with with some other tele is the color and contrast that it produces.

get one.. you wont be disappointed. if you're on a budget - get the next best thing - 80-200 f/2.8:)

Hi jun, the 70-200 is also an AF-S lens, so it focuses faster than an AF-D versions. It also has VR or vibration reduction that allows it to be handheld in low light situations but still allow a steady shot. But for optical quality, it performs the same as the 80-200 2.8 AF-D and AF-S versions. A short history of the lens by thom hogan here:
http://www.bythom.com/70200VRlens.htm
And to quote from it:

Nikon has had at least six previous f/2.8 telephoto zooms in this range:

• 80-200mm f/2.8 ED. This manual focus lens was first introduced in 1978 at Photokina. The lens has a unique rotating tripod collar and was a two-ring design, but only a handful were produced.
• 80-200mm f/2.8 ED. The most common of the manual focus versions uses a one-ring design and a full depth of field scale engraved on the barrel. The lens is distinguished by a huge 95mm front thread. Introduced in 1982, again, not a lot of these lenses were made.
• AF 80-200mm f/2.8 ED. The first of the autofocus versions appeared in 1987. Curiously, unlike most early AF conversions, Nikon appears to have made a few optical changes in this conversion, adding an element and making the front element the standard 77mm size used in most pro lenses.
• AF 80-200mm f/2.8D ED IF. The first D version appeared in 1992 and added no rotating front element.
• AF 80-200mm f/2.8D ED IF. A two-ring version of the classic design appeared next.
• AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8D ED IF. In 1999, Nikon added an AF-S version of the two-ring design, making a few other minor changes, as well.
All six of these lenses are universally regarded as being sharp, quality designs. Arguments abound about which of the AF versions is sharper than the other, with the most commonly held view appearing to be that the AF-S is the sharpest, the one-ring next sharpest, and the short-lived two-ring non AF-S as the weakest of the three. Frankly, however, they're all quite sharp and unless your handling is perfect, I doubt you'd be able to distinguish between them.

Hi Jun,

It might, but with a higher qualty lens, you get better color, contrast, and sharpness(A lens is generally softer wide open than stopped down). Also, AF speed will be faster which helps you better capture the moment.

Don't have an idea a to how much the price is locally.

Regards.

Jun, all of the things mentioned above by our fellow photogs are true... This is one of the best teles Nikon has ever made. A keeper lens..:) Good luck... :)

To add: Jun, if you really plan to get the 70-200... You have to do your research work or practice on a VR lens... Coz this is where most misconceptions and focusing/user errors take place. :)

Would anyone know if it is more expensive in Japan than Hidalgo?

My sis would be leaving for Japan next week and would stay there for about a week. I'm thinking of asking her to buy a good lens if the prices there are not that high.

Second, are lenses sold in Japan made in Japan or in China? i know that most lens now are being made in China but i read in some post that lenses in Japan are still made in Japan.

Tnx.

Prices in Japan are cheaper than elsewhere if you know where to look and you know who to talk to, specially if you can talk in Japanese. :)

... Most lenses sold in Japan are made in Japan of course; with the exception of some lenses; like the recent 18-200VR that went on mass-production (Thailand) to meet the global demand. :D

Try Yodobashi or Bic camera... Or tell her to sweep through the Akihabara district, be sure she brings someone with her who can speak Japanese, so that the store will not resort to using an interpreter... This can help in getting discounts.

eric, carlo, earl, levi, TJ, zandy and joel, thanks for all the advise and knowledge, really appreciate it,

however, it is not clear to me what is meant by "wide open" (please bear with me on this),

anyway, i'm more or less decided to get one (good-bye to my dream of getting a D200 though), next step is to scout for dealers with the cheapest offer (this is where i will need all the luck) ... again, many thanks ...

Jun, "wide-open" means setting the lens aperture or diaphragm to it's most open setting; to let in more light. :) And conversely, "stopping-down" is the direct opposite... You need to remember these terms as it will be common lingo amongst fellow photographers. :)

yes, i already started to save for the camera upgrade ...
surely, this will take sometime ...
by next year, i am practcally sure that my savings will not yet be sufficient to buy me a d300 ...
after another year, i presume my savings will already be quite close to the price of a new d400, but not good enough ...
anyway, by the following year, i will definitely make sure that i am able to buy that d500 by forcing my friends to lend me their money ...
wish me all the luck then ...
