I'm totally impressed with the Nikon users in this forum. A second EB already. How about I up the ante here? If you can come up with a good photo assignment, I will dedicate two pages of the Reader's Gallery just for the photos of this particular event. The judging will be done by the mods. Set the date and let me know.

Hey guys. Fresh Nikonian here. (D70s with kit lens)
Mind if i tag along? I hope we can work in the makati area... Ive been wanting to do urban photography for quite some time now. And I need help working my D70s. :) Should I leave my number or anything else here?

Good idea Manny, it's near and very "photogenic". Challenge may be to interpret the Memorial in a way that's very different that it's usually done.

We can also do a streetwalk in subject-rich areas like Chinatown.

photo assignment .. hmm i think what works really well with the magazine is a documentary style shoot... something that really speaks from your soul about a specific topic....

something that speaks nikon.. :D nikon for me stands for amazing color and handling.. a shoot that will test nikon's handling and colors ( i like it more than the s2/s3 hehe )

on the contrary... went there twice already without a need for a permit... although i didn't bring a camera that time. you just need to sign up at the lobby. not sure if this holds true for a photo shoot though. i'll try to pass by sometime within the week and check.

Ok, guys let me know if this idea will work for our Nikon EB. It will be a shooting EB with the objective of our collective output being featured in the September issue of DPP (thanks to Nick and the DPP team's kind offer). This is open to all Nikonians on this Forum, regardless if new to DPP or to the Nikon brand.

What we need from the Nikonians in this group are concrete ideas for the venue and theme of our shoot. The point is that the venue is accessible to everyone and interesting enough for photography, and the the theme can highlight a particular aspect of photography. Please share those ideas and then let's decide by this weekend. I recommend that we do the EB on a Saturday and during the magic hours as Dodie suggested. Then we can re-group and share / critique our images. So if the deadline for submission of photos is August 19, then that leaves August 12 as our EB date.

This is an oft photographed venue, but it is very accessible and its expanse provides a lot of varied photo opportunities. I'll try to check this weekend the details of doing the shoot there.

Theme: Creative Diversity
Put a group of photogs in one venue, and you will have different interpretations of the same "subject". Bringing us to the War Memorial will challenge us to create new viusalizations of something a lot of people are used to. This will hopefully highlight the creative diversity of the Nikonians.

Gear: No limitations
Bring anything and everything. Whatever you feel will help you get your shot.

At this point, we need concrete and solid ideas. Shooting from the top of a building can be fun, but we need to conisder if the shots we take from there will be collectively worthy and interesting enough to merit a few spreads in DPP. Not saying we shouldn't consider a building. Just saying we should consider our options completely. :)

We can always come up with "teams" and do different venues and re-group and share our work. This still works with the "Creative Diversity" theme.
ex.:
- War Memorial Team
- Chinatown Team
- Rooftop Team
etc.

Cathedral interiors are always fun to shoot, not sure on the etiquette though as I've never tried shooting in one, but should we try considering this? :)

I met the local "hunter" there.. he said he was using a nikon... i should have gotten his number in case i went back... the place smells bad, its wet all over, lots of people.. the place has so much character... only problem is they say that it isnt that safe to shoot there.. :)

Hi Sonny, sorry saw your post just now. Refering to post #104 in this thread, we were discussing doing an occular to the War Memorial.

Rosalie, Manny and I were able to do an occular visit to the American War Memorial yesterday mourning. Even in the pouring rain, it still was a nice place to photograph! The guards said it was no problem to do take pictures and that they were open from 9 to 5.

So here are the details for the 2nd Nikon EB / Shoot.
- Date: 12 August 2006, Saturday
- Theme: Creative Diversity
- Meet at 8:00am McDonald's in The Fort
- One last briefing at 8:15am
- Proceed to the War Memorial at 8:45am
- Shoot from 9:00 onwards
- Re-group at lunchtime (venue to be decided)

Shooting guidelines
- Entries have to be shot on the day itself
- Shoot in RAW (for possible publication)
- Colorspace (to be confirmed with DPP; sRGB or Adobe RGB?)
- No post-processing allowed save for cropping and rotation (guys please add to this as you see fit; hmmm... what about HDR?)
- Gear to be used: as you see fit to get your shot
- Models: if you have an idea for a shot and you want to bring a model, then by all means bring what you need (you can discuss this on the thread because you may want to share with the group :) )

Hindi siya contest Dodie, for fun talaga siya! I guess the guidelines are to help ensure we have pics that are worthy to be featured in DPP.

As for those who can't make it on the 12th, I think the main reason for the guideline of images to be shot on the day itself is partly for the camaraderie and also to limit period of when the shots were taken. I guess it should be OK for the others who can't make it to share their photos as long as they were taken within this week and at the War Memorial. Hopefully people who have signed-up for Aug. 12 won't jump ship! This suggestion is open to the group. What do you guys think?

i guess you have a point. i will be able to meet you guys before the actual shoot but i have to jet before 9am. so that leaves me with a 1 hr window to shoot during lunch time. if i get dismissed early from class i will folllow

i concur willie. will raw adjustments other than adobe camera raw, such as aperture, capture one and other software considered legal or included?

Yup, I think RAW adjustments done with other RAW converters should be fine.

Wow, this post processing sub-topic has gone so far. Why not give everyone a free rein on this? Anyway, it's still DPP-group who'll decide on whether the photo is qualified or not.

We are first and foremost doing this for fun... then, everything else just comes second. As Rosalie has mentioned it, being published is merely a bonus.

And as I've read in the other thread, DPP-Nick-group chooses the photo, checks the raw and decides if it will come out or not.

Glad to see the support and camarederie from all the Nikon users in DPP. Since I offered a minimum two page spread for this EB in DPP mag, if you all won't mind, I will make the rules.

1) Only photos shot on the 12th will be allowed. We want everyone to have the same conditions.
2) After the EB, it would be appreciated if you can quickly post your photos to our September gallery. I will have another gallery set up that will say Sept Nikon EB.
3) Each photographer will only be allowed to submit Three (3) photos.
4) Deadline is strictly on the 19th. If your photo is not up by the 19th in the gallery you miss the opportunity to get printed in DPP mag. You will have a maximum of four days after to get us your CD or DVD.

Post Processing and other Rules:

5) Preferably you shoot in RAW. Extract to Adobe RGB. Save final file in TIFF.
6) No watermarks allowed.
7) Any post processing will be allowed, its up to you how you want to PP your images. However, take note that if you go overboard, there's a good chance we won't choose your image. HDR, B&W, Infrared, etc, etc, etc. Its all open.
8) You should crop your image to the way you want it presented, however, bear in mind that we may need to make a minor crop just to fit magazine specs.

I suggest someone appoint a leader and secure a permit. From reading the posts here, I can already sense that this photo opp won't happen. Just talking to one guard will not assure you that you can actually photograph in the Memorial. Talk to someone in a position to make a decision and secure the rights to shoot quickly.

i suggest to bring camera raincoats. i made my own out of a national bookstore bag. just made a hole and made sure that the camera fits.

In this case, I need to find out from the gate guard of the War Memorial who the person in charge is. I'll then inform the OIC of our intended activity and ask for permission nicely. :)

I'll be able to go tomorrow right after lunch or so.

In the meantime:
- clean your lenses and sensors (I just saw dust on mine!)
- format those cards
- charge those batteries
- make a checklist of the accessories you intend to bring
- prepare your rain protection

btw... just a reminder for all, make sure you follow the small "no entry" signs on the road. its kinda discreet located at the street corner.

was busy taking pics last saturday so was unable to notice these and wandered off to be followed by a car. i ended up in the gate and took a parting shot of the memorial. a roving guard approached and reprimanded me for going to "off limits" area. apparently the car which was following me was the asst. supervisors... hehe. the guard at the gate likewise advised me of my wandering.
i apologized for my mistake to both of them and was off.

took it as a blessing tho. so for this saturday, just as a small precaution, make sure you/our group stays in the "public zones" where guests can take photos else we might get more than a reprimand.

Ahh Nick, thanks for the wisdom of experience! I really shouldn't have taken the word of the guard. I hand-carried the letter to the war memorial's superintendent's office just a few minutes ago. As luck would have it, he's busy attending to a wreath-laying ceremony that will happen today. The nice lady in the office said it wasn't a matter of not giving permission (since they usually do), it was that the super didn't have time to attend to our request. So, our options:

1. Push through with the venue, but move to the 19th.
- even if we shoot in the morning, we can still PP our 3 chosen shots and still submit to DPP by the PM or before the day ends

2. Push through with the date, but change venue: UP Diliman
- UP Diliman is another venue that's super diverse. We can even meet up earlier for those who want to try capturing those early morning tree shots (if there's enough sun).
- any other suggestions?

We will just have to give this dedicated group a bit of an extension.

Lets make the deadline to post on Aug 22. However, if we like your photo and contact you, please go out of your way and get us your CD no later than Aug 25. There can be no exceptions as we will be cutting it too close to our deadline. Nino--I hope you can handle the last minute rush.

6:00 am sat at petron starbucks after san pedro exit. then leave 630 for canlubang we will be doing mostly landscapes, people, streets century old trees, golf course, a church, street photography, people, it was a nice place actually old houses, very rural. old warehouses.

we will be going to the old yulo ranch and old canlubang golf country club which i believe is already closed as it was due already for redevelopment.

before i left for batangas at 3am yesterday (friday) i had checked the forum for updates, as i dont have any means of accessing the internet while am out. i drove back to manila and reached The Fort, McDonalds at 7:30am today (saturday), waiting and waiting until i left the area seeing no nikon users around. proceeded to the American Memorial at 8:45am, to cut the story short, i left the area very disappointed and here i a reading this thread...it was moved and had last minutes changes. i should have commited to other things if i knew it will be postponed. just a favor, kindly update us for any changes ahead of time not on the last day...terrible! this is supposed to be my 1st participation on the group. anyway...charge to experience nalang po....good day to all and more power!
