View Full Version : Somethin' fishy (Navotas fishport night shoot)

The road was muddy wet, and the air had a pungent fishy smell. The night seemed still and unimaginative, but as with anything else, nothing there was what it seemed. As soon as we entered the Navotas fishport at around 10 p.m., we knew we were in for some exhilirating shoot. Our group of seven photographers -- Jay [Jallorina], Red [Posion], BJ [Hernandez], Joel [Garcia], Lloyd [San Diego], Hochi Abaya and I -- were suddenly scattered around the place which, thankfully, was big enough for eight photographers (Erwin Feliciano would later catch up with us).

Consider this: Eleven of the 14 barangays of Navotas are coastal towns, and their names evoke images of the sea and fishing. According to government statistics, 70% of Navotas's inhabitants derive their livelihood from fishing and related industries. Navotas is said to have the biggest fish market in Southeast Asia, where fish are caught locally, imported from all over the country from as far as Mindanao, or raised in fishponds. Based on recent statistics, the municipality has 36 organizations related to fishing.

One thing I have noticed about the place is the obvious lack of progress. Informal settlers make up 32% of Navotas's total population, and the number could have grown in the last seven years. It was also evident during our shoot that a number of the workers at the fishport were children, some as young as seven or eight years old. Some work as cardboard collectors (imported frozen fish are packed in cardboard boxes), and some as fraction boys/girls (they separate good fish from those that have been crushed or not suitable for sale). Others work as kargadors who carry heavy loads, some as batilyos (those who pull heavy loads of fish from the fishing vessel to the market floor or from one trading area to another), and still others work as durog boys who collect broken or rotten fish and sell these to be made into fish sauce.

Based on my conversation with Mang Eddie, a wholesale fish merchant at the fishport, this is the fishing season -- a total of 31,000 banyeras (tubs) arrived that night from as many as 16 fishing boats. There were 18 merchants (called 'buy and sell') who sell the fish to owners of market stalls in Metro Manila and in the provinces. Trade started at around 8 p.m. and when we left the place at around 2 a.m., fish were still being sold, although there was no longer as much activity as before.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and we hope our photos will speak clearly about the action that night. I don't wish to editorialize, but here's hoping we will get to understand Navotas better through these pictures.

P.S.
Di na 'ko gagawa ng cover, matutulog pa 'ko! Hehe. =B)

Cheers,
Norman

Awesome documentary! Well done guys, two thumbs up!:)

@Norman: I like your intro! I like the way you composed "All lined up" and "Sea Quest" photos, it truly tells my eyes about your documentary. Your a good writer too!

@Jay: "take home" photo is a great hit for me! Very nice composition and perfect timing too, capturing the man walking far from the busy market place, so in-depth. I like your photography style.

@Joel: nice concept on the "panagtawid gutom" and " Pagbiyak", vey artistically captured.

@BJ:"Wasted" is an awesome photo, love the tone and texture.

Thanks for sharing everyone! Please post more... after you're all rested from your photo marathon!

If only I knew you were going to the fish port, then I would have joined you. I thought you were going to go around the area.

I love the different perspectives. Oh, and by the way, the fish photos looked yummier than pungent (that's because I didn't smell it). Made me want to cook fresh fish.

hi joel this is very nice! i've seen a couple of versions of this simplistic shot and this one's one of my faves.. nice work!

@jay: love the long-exposed shots. it really showed the busy atmosphere of the place and is definitley more successful with motion shown than freezing it.

@kuya norms: wonderful wide angles again as usual! love your composition (as always!) to drive my eyes to the subject. loved the intro as well!

@all: great job of braving and making all the efforts to share to us and give us an idea on how life is there. great job of taking us there through your photos! congrats! :)

it was nice meeting the other members of the night exposure boys...hochi, arwin, lloyd and joel..

@norman, you are right, the focus was soft and I check the glass inside the lens I saw some smudges of my finger...me bad. :)

@jay, the composition and play of light on the "teka-home" photo goes with emotions and alot of stories to tell...

you guys are really fast... and gung-ho. imagine filling up 8 pages and the shoot was just last saturday night, whoa! nice work -- as in i can smell the fishes, hear the crowds, feel the thud of banyeras unloading. sayang, would've loved to join but i'm at the tailend of a bout with shingles. but again, hanep captures so keep 'em coming!

Dalawang klase ang natutunan ko ng gabing yun... May mga namumulot ng "Durog" (isda) at may Durog na sumisinghot ng "rugby"....

"Sinong Durog? "

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/200/440862542_2309141674_o.jpg

hehehe clever desaturation of rugby boy. i actually met him during my recon of the place a few weeks back...he was pestering me to take his picture while he was sniffing from his rugby bag. an old hand at the fish port then scolded him and told him to leave me alone and to attend to his pregnant wife! huh??!!!

i asked the man..."ha?! may asawa na 'to??"

"oo, walang magawa sa buhay mga p@##*&-inang leche na yan!"

the old man them slumped on his reclining chair...drunk and wasted!

such characters you meet in this place!

Oh well...

Great photos people! =) powerful images from you guys! not only did you capture the unimaginative (as Norman's intro put it) scene that you were confronted with and made your own but you managed to tell the story of the people that was involved in your photos! =)

Guys...this documentary of the Navotas fishport is freakin' interesting! I'm glad you guys came up with something like this. The photos speaks for themselves! Definitely waiting for more takes. :)

I do hope that shoots like this are open even to hobbyists like me.

i just adjust it at K. it's very difficult to adjust the white balance using the bondpaper we used... every part of the paper gives different white balance...

Please post more... after you're all rested from your photo marathon!

hi gio!

this was my WB strategy (might be crude for some!): i brought a white bond paper. i asked BJ to hold this up for me under the mixed lighting of the fish port. took a photo in AWB. in rawshooter, i used the WB eyedropper to sample from the photo of the paper. i got a reading of Kelvin 3250. i then used this Kelvin setting on the rest of the shots (hmmm, maybe a little bit of adjustment for some shots, around this base figure). thats how i got my WB setting.

hi joel this is very nice! i've seen a couple of versions of this simplistic shot and this one's one of my faves.. nice work!

@jay: love the long-exposed shots. it really showed the busy atmosphere of the place and is definitley more successful with motion shown than freezing it.

@kuya norms: wonderful wide angles again as usual! love your composition (as always!) to drive my eyes to the subject. loved the intro as well!

@all: great job of braving and making all the efforts to share to us and give us an idea on how life is there. great job of taking us there through your photos! congrats! :)

@John - You should join us Bro. I know you like this kind of project. Thanks for your kind reply. your right this is my version of Navotas spoon and fork pic. Hope to meet you in our next EB. Thanks!:)

going through the images was really entertaining. i could feel the energy in that place. especially in jay's slow shutter photos. norman, great intro, btw. it gave the whole thread a clear perspective of things.

how's the lighting in that place? can you shoot at F2.8 at least? always at 800 or 1600 for handhelds?

great thread, guys!
