I've been thinking about getting the 360FGZ but i'm not sure if it can do wireless just with the built in flash of the K100D as trigger. with my former KM D5D + 3600hsd flash, it was easy as 123 to do wireless BUT i red in dpr that it's not possible with the K100D unless you have two of these flash.

sigma is out but i can also get the Metz 54Mz3 then i found out that it can't do P-ttl with the latest adaptor so i wrote to metz & this was thier answer:

Dear Mr.
unfortunately, Petax P-TTL is still not provided by any Metz but in
planning. P-TTL should be introduced probably at April in form as a
new adapter SCA3702 M2 and should be possible with your 54 MZ-3 as
well. Please wait. True TTL flash control as usual with a *istD and
*istDs is no longer provided by a newer K10D, K100D, *istD L and DL2.

what bugs me is the word "probably" :( . can the K10D do wireless with the built in flash? :Scared:

Yes with firmware 1.10 with the 360 and 540

Funny thing was that I tried to ask this in the lighting section regarding what's the difference between master and controller mode. But no one answered. :(

Also, the onboard RTF doesn't work wirelessly with Sigma's 500 flashes.

Sorry, can you clarify your question?

1. Are you asking if you can trigger an off-cam 360/540FGZ (manual mode) via the pop-up flash?

- Yes, this is possible via the slave mode.

2. Or if you can control off-cam 360/540FGZ (PTTL) via the pop-up flash?

- No, you need another 360/540FGZ to use the wireless mode and trigger other off-cam flashes in PTTL mode.

John's got it correct. The key is whether you're after PTTL or simply manual mode. I have yet to test the K100D with the 360 in manual mode, but confirmed that PTTL doesn't work wirelessly with the K100D.

But hey! I use my two 360s in manual mode all the time. But I am using a k10d.

Same is true with Sigma EF-530 DG Super against K100D.

To further clarify, there's also an "Auto Mode" as discussed in the cheap-ass strobist thread. The difference here is that you need to input the iso & aperture manually in the flash. Multiple flash can be used in auto-mode and you just need to use the appropriate ratios per flash.

You can use this via the Slave 2 / SL2 mode and is triggered by the pop-up flash.

As discussed here (please do back read), the K100D doesn't have a PTTL wireless mode.

The nearest thing to the PTTL wireless mode is the Auto mode, which can be used by the K100D. This is by using the K100D's pop-up flash to trigger the 360FGZ in optical slave mode.

The K100D cannot trigger the 360/540 in Wireless P-TTL mode.

The K100D can trigger them using Optical slave mode. BUT
1. Any flash even digicams can trigger your flash.
2. The popup flash in the K100D is always in P-TTL mode and theres no way to get around this. So your optical slave flash will be triggered by the pre-flash and not by the actual flash.
3. The triggering flash will contaminate the frame, in wireless P-TTL this is just an option.

When I was still using the K100D, what I do is use 2sec timer, the pre-flash is fired when the mirror locked (I use my hand to block the pre-flash).

If you have no problems with using your flash at M or Auto mode, then using a radio trigger will work.

Just an additional note, since the pop-up flash triggering flash was brought up.

I was at a studio this past weekend where strobes were optically triggered (K10D doesn't have a sync slot). You cannot use the pop-up flash to trigger since, like Jeff mentioned, the pop-up is always in P-TTL mode. The pre-flash wil trigger the other strobes, resulting in pre-firing and your pictures dark.

I had to use a 360 set on 1/32, pointed up, and on manual mode.

A friend, using a Canon flash with only ITTL mode, had to trigger his flash (to trigger the strobes) using a wireless trigger. Using a trigger to trigger a trigger that triggered strobes. :)

Using a trigger to trigger a trigger that triggered strobes...so if trigger triggered trigger what did trigger trigger to trigger the strobes

... the finger triggered trigger triggered the trigger that triggered the strobes! :D

I trigger my strobes optically, whenever my sync cord and wireless triggers fail... Turn off the red-eye function. I use the flash in wireless mode still, even without a 540, in controller mode so the pop-up flash won't contribute to the exposure.

edit: if using a K100D, having no controller or master mode, you can use a piece of developed film to block the on-board flash. Or buy the Nikon accessory that blocks the on-board flash. This triggers strobes optically, without contributing to the exposure.
