I am looking for a new Nikon D50. Where is the best place to go in terms of price and service? Are the kit lens included enought for a newbie?

Hi Hubert,

You can buy the Nikon D50 for only Php 35k in Hidalgo Quiapo. There are three (3) suppliers there with reasonable prices and good after sales service namely:

Avenue Photo Supply c/o Wilson
Tel. No. 733-54-74

Watson Photo Supply c/o Philip or Jomar
Tel. No. 733-76-97

Henry's Photo Supply
733-77-23

The lens kit that goes with the body is quite good for beginners and reasonable but I am not comfortable using it because of its zoom mechanism, when it reaches it maximum, it automatically goes back to its minimum range. My suggestion for you is to buy only the body at Php 30k and buy a Nikkor 50mm lens with an aperture opening of f1.8 for only Php 5,800.00. That is already a fast and reliable prime lens. It' can also shoot with better depth of field, you just have to use your legs when you want to zoom in or zoom out. You can later on upgrade your equipment and lens as you gain more experience and improve your skills.

Going to Hidalgo is easy, just take the LRT and get off at Carriedo Station. Go to SM Quiapo and exit at the Foreign Exchange Counter door, after that you can see the suppliers at the back of the fruit and food stalls. I suggest you call them first before you go to make sure that they have stocks and make a reservation already over the phone so that you are guaranteed that they will not sell it to anyone else who will arrive earlier than you. Bring your ATM for security reasons or extra cash to buy your SD card and card reader. Good Luck and Happy Shooting.

Frances, have you bought from that site before? Their process seems to be too low to be legit.

A Nikon D200 for $1089? D2Xs for $2,899? Sounds to good to be true.
Be careful out there ....
