View Full Version : Which type/s of Flash Diffusers do you us during weddings?
ryanmacalandag 07-15-2006, 12:07 AM Here are the choices. I just would wanna know which one is the most common. :)
1. Stofen Omnibounce
2. LSPJ (I/II)
3. DIY Diffuser (foamcore/board bounce)
4. Bounce Flash
5. Finnbounce (on board flash diffuser)
6. Others: ____________
7. Mixture
8. None (available light purist)
Also, how do you like the diffuser you're using?
Hope the pros here could shed light on this important topic (i think). :D
Pilar Tuason 07-15-2006, 10:27 AM I think that the omnibounce is used a lot. I even see non-pros using it. I also bounce from the ceiling, wall, reflector when necessary. As much as possible I use available light.:)
Ruel Tafalla 07-15-2006, 10:55 PM Im using the lightsphere photojournalist 2. Its the best diffuser i have used. Very good light distribution. Although it's a bit funny looking design. :)
Richard Ledesma 07-15-2006, 11:34 PM I'm using joe demb flash diffser. Very convenient compare lightsphere.
just my opinion.
Arnell Umali 07-16-2006, 12:55 AM Straight flash. Very convenient.

sandy cuevas 07-16-2006, 02:01 AM Mostly I use the flash unit's bounce card (or rather the catch light card). But if there's nothing to bounce the flash on to, then I use direct flash with stofen omnibounce. :)
JonDexterTan 07-16-2006, 08:28 AM I only have the Sto-Fen Omnibounce for now -- use it straight up and take it off if subject's far away and for bounce flashes.
:D
jaime_elizaga 07-17-2006, 01:49 AM use a bounce card if I can find a wall or cieling to bounce it to if there is none, I use the flash straight on. But I do use a flash bracket.. takes care of the side shadows when shooting in portrait mode. :)
Pilar Tuason 07-17-2006, 09:46 AM Oh ..just to add, I also use the STE2 remote trigger and trigger the flash of cam when necessary. sometimes up to 3 flashes:Grin: I used to use the Quantum barebuld T2D but my external battery pack went kaput..i need to have it recharged but I want to make sure a reliable source can do it. I heard of laptops breaking down due to recharged batteries.
Vince_Villamin 07-17-2006, 07:00 PM I use the diffuser included with my SB-800 :)
James_Limsoc 07-17-2006, 07:41 PM use a bounce card if I can find a wall or cieling to bounce it to if there is none, I use the flash straight on. But I do use a flash bracket.. takes care of the side shadows when shooting in portrait mode. :)
Hey Jaime, where did you get the flash bracket for your camera? are you a canon user? thanks.
levi lacandula 07-17-2006, 08:34 PM im no pro - but here's my setup whenever i cover events/weddings
> 90% i use the bounce card (esp for venues with low ceilings)
> the rest of the time i use the stofen that comes with my flash (esp when i use my tele)

jaime_elizaga 07-18-2006, 02:26 AM Hey Jaime, where did you get the flash bracket for your camera? are you a canon user? thanks.
Yep, I use an EOS 10D and a 300D... I'm also using a stroboframe VH-2000, got it off the used market. Brand new ones cost around P4-5k and it's available at your friendly hidalgo merchant..
Before the VH-2000, I used a falcon eyes flash bracket, a stoboflip immitation. It's hard to tell the difference with an orig one.. hehehe.. I think Aperture sells it for P1,500.
Oh.. and you need an off shoe cord if you want to use bracket.. it will set you back around P3k.
James_Limsoc 07-18-2006, 10:03 PM thanks for the info. will check it out.
John Rich N. Villas 04-23-2007, 04:00 PM what does an omnibounce look like? i bought a second hand flash (550EX) and the previous owner gave me something that looks like an omnibounce but i'm not sure if it's the original.
Ems Chua 04-23-2007, 07:18 PM bounce card when im near/upcloseandpersonal.
straight, when im oh so far away.
pocket wizard and an assistant to carry the flash (para hindi in your face yun light) when im shooting something else.
FR Javier 04-28-2007, 12:43 AM Isn't gary fong's lightsphere as effective as it claims to be? I only saw one response about it and another one against it.
You probably dont like his ice cream cup design. hehe.
Im planning on getting one, based on his videos and website. Should I? Any idea how much it is locally?

It around 3,500. Pretty useful when indoors, but then with large groups its not as powerful.
Looking into a Demb diffuser, anybody know where I can purchase one locally?
ANGELO SANTOS 04-29-2007, 02:23 AM i use both the OmniBounce and the Lightsphere II.
i use LSII for the brides and the grooms in their respective rooms. i use OB for everywhere else. basta may wall and/or ceiling (their main use).
i don't use diffusers in the church. i know it (ETTL flash) well enough to trust it (parang Joe Buissink using P mode 90% of the time! :)). i need all the power it can give in dim situations. should i use them, it's straight on and only during closeups/macro and portrait shots (read: in your face shots).
pag mataas ceiling, add lang ako ng flash exp compensation (+1/3, +2/3).
regie_de_rueda 04-29-2007, 04:12 AM Lumiquest softbox for me. Gives soft shadows. The only thing I dont like about this set up is I need to stick velcro strips all around the flashhead itself.
Marcos Reyes Lequin 04-29-2007, 05:51 AM I use Gary Fong's Lightsphere II Photojournalist, looks cool, and i even can use it as a drinking cup when i get thirsty, hehehehehe, but available light is always the best.
erwinjasonmendoza 12-11-2007, 03:33 AM I use the diffuser included with my SB-800 :)
Whats the difference between the Stofen Omnibounce and the Nikon Diffusion Dome (SW-10H)?
I know they have the same purpose but how about the output?
Which one is more effective?
Should I get a stofen diffuser even if the SB-800 already has one?:(
noliperfecto 02-07-2008, 05:11 AM Lumiquest softbox for me. Gives soft shadows. The only thing I dont like about this set up is I need to stick velcro strips all around the flashhead itself.
Hey Regie, where' you get your softbox and for how much? Know any local distributors?
Nols
Roland R. Roldan 02-07-2008, 08:19 AM file:///C:/DOCUME%7E1/ROLAND/LOCALS%7E1/TEMP/moz-screenshot.jpgThese are the diffusers I use made by Lumiquest. Nice soft lighting effect. Effective also for all those with high ceiling locations.
ricorojas 02-07-2008, 11:53 AM try Spectralight.
bernie_ledesma 02-07-2008, 02:35 PM Calling Spectralight converts, care to share how the diffuser performas on open air venues like garden parties. I currently use the Lightsphere II , its okay for indoors where there is a roof to bounce it to, but outside, with a wide angle lens it just cant disburse the light for a good coverage (plus its really bulky and heavy!!)
It seems more versatile than the Demb too, so any feedback how the Spectralight is?

Hi Bernie- Im a user of Demb Flash... what i like about Demb is it minimize the shadows when you use a flash...also it has a additional soft diffuser that you can attach for portraits. I like it.
I dont know about Spectralight? is this like Demb?
This is the site of Demb Flash Diff. http://www.dembflashproducts.com/diffuser/
bernie_ledesma 02-07-2008, 03:14 PM Hi Joel,
Spectralight was launched in Photoworld, distributed by Avenue,
http://www.pinoyphotography.org/forum/index.php?topic=24190.0, It functions like the Demb, only I think it has lot more inherent features that are useful as compared to the Demb.
1. You can change the diffusing element to other materials
2. You can position it as shoot through
3. ABS plastic, which is the material its made of is a tough, really tough
4. It has more angles of bounce the light with (it has a ball joint)
5. So much lighter than the Lightsphere II
Im looking for something practical to use outdoor where there is no roof or walls to bounce with, (not so creative takes) like for events documentation only. And here I often use the 10-22 so the light has to be dispersed w i d e enough.
Though I like the extra diffusion the Demb has (those two transparent plastic in front of the reflector) but that could easily be duplicated (using the diffused plastic case of Tanduay 15 years Rum)(which happens to be the Best Rum ever).
Thats why id really like to hear the comments of the first few users of the product.

Ha ha ha...Tanduay plastic case is kinda thick though :D. I think Brando L. can share some comments about the spectra light he bought one of this.
