I would like to try macro photography but do not want to invest in a true macro lens at this point. My question is, would close up lens suffice? Can anyone share his or her experience with close up lens? There are Hoya and Tiffen sets (+1,+2,+4) available that are much, much less expensive than a true macro lens. Thanks!

What system are you using? There are many "growth paths" that you can take. And I tell you, macro photography does grows into you. These close-up filters are "nice to have" supplements for a short period, in my case, I bought a close up lens D500 (comes in 52/58/72/77mm) sizes using it with the 24-70mm. It's got a decent amount of marco capability, but not enough for serious macro photography. Today, I've moved up to the 100mm 2.8 and an extension tube EF25, and hardly use the D500 (different filter size). Better you go directly to a good macro lens. just my .02 cents...

How much of a difference would a macro lens have regarding detail shots for weddings(rings etc)? Currently I have put off buying a macro lens because I usually get what I want from a Powershot Pro 1, which has excellent macro capability IMO. Do you think a Macro lens will have enough of an improvement(obviously there will be an improvement) in IQ?

If its a wedding photo output as oppose to a jewelry photo output, it will be difficult to justify. The layout may highlight parts of the photo of two different intentions.
