5 MASTERS EXHIBIT @ OWG
OWG is pleased to announce its forthcoming group exhibit featuring the 5 Masters of Philippine art and photography. The 5 Masters include soon to be proclaimed National Artist Bencab, as well as Virgillo Aviado, Wig Tysmans, Nap Jamir and Bien Bautista. The exhibit will be celebrated with a preview showing on May 15, 2006 and formal opening cocktails on May 17 at 6pm. It will feature current prints, photographs and installations by these multi-awarded artists and will run until June 5, 2006.
In this exhibit, the 5 masters come together with one common mission- to make use of today's technology in creating their own brand of art. It is not everyday that one will be able to witness such an unusual gathering of greats, rendering this summer offering of the OWG as surely something to watch out for.
Benedicto "Bencab" Cabrera was born on April 10 in Malabon, Manila. His artistic career was formally launched during his second solo show, which was held at The Luz Gallery in 1968. Since then Bencab has exhibited all over the Philippines as well as in Asia, Europe, and the United States. He is also known to have helped establish the Baguio Arts Guild (BAG) and Tam-awan Village, Baguio. His works have been the subject of three books, Ben Cabrera: Etchings (1970-1980) by Cid Reyes; Bencab's Rock Sessions by Eric Caruncho; and BENCAB by Alfred Yuson and Cid Reyes. Bencab has won several major artawards in a career spanning four decades and is this year's recipient of the National Artist Award.
Virgillo "Pandy" Aviado was born on the 29th of April in Sta. Cruz, Manila. He has exhibited in various spaces in Manila such as the AAP Art Gallery, The Luz Gallery, Ayala Museum and The West Gallery. Abroad, his works have been exhibited in the Chatam Gallery in Hong Kong, IBM Gallery in New York, Galeria Estudio Cid in Madrid, Galerie Roch Art in Amsterdam, and the Asia Art Museum in Fukuoka, among others. He became Visual Arts Director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1991. Multi-awarded artist Aviado is included in books such as the CCP Encyclopedia-Visual Arts, Art and Culture of the Philippines 3-The Printmaker and Contemporary Philippine Art.
Wig Tysmans has exhibited his works in spaces such as the Ayala Museum, Hyatt Hotel, Chicago, USA, Luz Gallery and most recently in the Pinto Art Gallery. His photographs have been shown in magazines such as Mabuhay, People Asia, Lifestyle Asia, Mega Magazine, Bluprint, Tatler Philippines and all the major dailies. His photographs havealso been used in Annual Reports, Corporate Brochures and other collateral for companies such as PCIBank, RCBC, Union Bank, Global Bank, Allied Bank, BPI, Equitable PCIBank, FMIC, Lapanday, Macondray, del Monte, Ayala Land, Ayala Corporation, Petron, PLDT, etc.
Tysman's works have been featured in numerous books such as Sinaunang Habi, Bencab's Rock Sessions, Malacanan book by Nick Joaquin, Art Petron, and the Central Bank's Ginto and Tanaw. He is currently doing book projects on regions in the Philippines.
Nap Jamir II, a cinematographer/director has been working in the field of Philippine advertising since the 1980s, initially as a still photographer, then in 1985 as a cinematographer/director. As a still photographer, he co-established Shadow Visual Design Group, Inc., a photography and graphic design outfit which has won numerous print awards from the Advertising Congress of the Philippines and photography/design awards for album covers and posters from the Awit Awards. As an art photographer, he has had several one-man and group shows at the Cultural Center of the Phil., the Luz gallery, Art Finale, Museum of Contemporary Art, the Kamalig Art Gallery and others. He is also currently a Senior Lecturer for Advanced Cinemarography in the University of the Philippines.
Bienvenido "Bien" Bautista is among the top travel/advertising photographers in the country and was the Camera Club of the Philippines' Master Photographer of the year 2001. His black-and-white photograph of a wooden bridge became the eye-catching cover of the Philippine Yearbook 2004. The veteran photographer published a coffee table book of his best photography works. The 200-page book, entitled Esta Bien contains an Afterword by tycoon photographer Jaime Zobel de Ayala and an Introduction by
Franco Patriarca.
