i don't know if this one falls here, but let me tell you a story anyway.
this is a story of dreaming, chasing the dream, acheiving the dream, and trying to hold on to that dream...
the year was 1994, roughly 4 years after the devastating pinatubo eruption
a fresh business grad from angeles city. hehe, yeah... a business grad!
we i, together with 4 other guys dreampt of making it big! in the art scene!
national art scene or nothing... yun ang pangarap namin before
We belong to a local based art group in angeles city named "ART YOUTH"
A.Y. for short, composed of mostly students who just love the arts.
NICK REYES the only art school grad among the group, he leads and founded the group as well. JUN CRUZ, a certified nurse who gave up his nursing stint in the states to pursue our dream. JAPS VIRAY, a newbie theology professor. ALLAN DAVID, a dentistry stud from University of the East, and me... just a fresh grad.
all of us just beleived that one day we can make it big time in the national art scene, yeah we beleived... how? that's something we don't know how. isa lang ang aral sa art school sa amin, the rest... puro PUSO lang.
then we decided to join a national mural painting competition sponsored by REMY MARTIN, ayus! me alak na... me art pah! hehe, national mural painting competition, the 1st ever in the country... this mean ang mga sasali... mga bigatin grupo! mga dios ng national art scene! o e anoh? so what?! let's make an entry and let the entry speak for itself. guess what? we made it to the finals! out of 36 entries, 4 finalist...
the finalist:
SariArki - group of archi students from UP, maindi yung entry nila. letras figuras ang concept.
SalingPusa - Artist group na based sa Antipolo, la lang.... mga collector lang naman ng mga gawa nila includes BenCab, Zobel, etc
Grupo - group of UP art professors, one of their member is a daughter of AMORSOLO, and the other one... well, siya lang naman nagdesign ng ating 1000 and 500 peso bill
Art Youth - kami... mga batang angeles na laging inuubo kase araw araw kaming lumalaklak ng alikabok ng lahar! yun lang...
each paintings will be painted sa wall ng luneta park, yung wall just acroos the street where the rizal momument is located... dun sa meron kalabaw paakyat ng quirino grandstand grounds. munumental ang mga mural paintings na ito! ito na yung pangarap namin na mamatay man kame... me maiiwang alaala namin na minsan... gumuhit kami sa national park ng pinas!!! ayos yun! panalo diba?
ok, to cut the story short, around 8pm 4th of december, 1994, mandarin oriental hotel functionroom, awards nite ng 4 finalist... tapos na lahat ng mural paintings sa luneta...
they would just award the grand prize winner of P250,000, plus the prestige for the group kung sino man ang manalo... ito na yung panagrap namin... ang maisulat sa art history ng pinas!
and we did... ART YOUTH, the group from angeles city won the grand prize!
pinataob namin lahat ng mga tinitingala namin sa larangan ito...
mga taong nagdidikta kung ano ang trend sa art scene that time...
panis sila lahat!!!
male... kasama kami sa mga panis...
yeah sure we won the grand prize, our names are all over the papers days after the awrds nite, galleries booking us for group exhibits... calling cards from art collectors
sikat kami to the max! but we couldn't hold on to the dream, it's too big for us... maybe it's too big for us that we couldn't graps it with our little hands...

moral lesson? keep on dreaming... beleive on ur dream, but be ready... you'll never know... it may come true and your not ready
