View Full Version : Let There Be Light
jay_alonzo 05-11-2006, 11:34 AM Mabuhay!
Photography has become a technology-driven art that it slips from our mind sometimes, the fact that the only reason why this craft came into being is simply because of light-through the accidental discovery of our capability to capture it, and later on, conscious efforts to preserve the image it formed.
Mind you, this forum isn't a substitute for a class or a workshop, or even for reading our Digital Photographer magazine even. (Hint: subscribe, enroll, discuss online-now that would be a perfect combo) But seriously, surely a know-how can be mined in our discussions, ideas gleamed from opinion, thoughts or suggestions shared by others; just follow the thread and try to participate as much as possible.
If you've taken the basics, it would not hurt to mingle with the community to be able to learn more for learning is a continuous process. I encourage everyone to try to contribute replies to queries placed no matter how elementary you think it may be, for the benefit of the poster and of others too shy to make their own postings. In addition, we are not confined to studio or artificial lighting here; but also on topics like how can we maximize natural lighting for portraits or even product photography, to name a few, for not everyone can afford or would be willing to plunge in investing on studio lights.
Also, I hope to see more postings revolving around lighting practices on applied photography, rather than queries about what flash to buy, "which is a better deal-studio flash X or Y", questions and stuff like that (sure you can ask but probably you'd consider doing it in other more relevant sections of this forum). There are plenty of printed matter, website and forums that could satisfy one's need to know the specs and comparative specs of various lighting equipment and even user reviews on these gadgets. I'd rather see skills-oriented people thriving here rather than gear-heads. Your lighting equipment is as good as your imagination can take you only, and you need the technical foundation to bring you there.
Finally, I hope everyone would be able to maintain their civility in posting and replying, avoiding the sarcastic and even challenging-tone sometimes or be a smart Aleck. Any hint of such and expect a removal of an affected post. Deletion or editing of posts by the moderator doesn't require a consensus here. Let's not try to emulate the other forums. This is a Digital Photographer forum and we uphold excellence and camaraderie. It is possible to discuss sans face to face and still maintain that friendly atmosphere. After all, this is your small community.
Welcome to the Lighting section of Digital Photographer online.

nino_carandang 05-17-2006, 05:47 PM as long as it doesn't violate their intellectual property rights, it's perfectly ok. make a thread.
jay_alonzo 05-18-2006, 08:23 AM Hi Willy...yes that would be nice. But make sure to give your source or the website where you got it. Preferably you should ask for permission to post it in a forum from the author.

Hope to attend more of your lighting sessions soon!
Hanz_Florentin 08-06-2006, 03:28 PM Hi Avery! - Kamusta APC?
Hi Jay - I'm with Avery with one of your 1 day crash course in lighting. And that class was excellent, eventhough it was quite fast (medyo bitin)and compact, learning the basics of it really helped me be more cautious in choosing/composing my shots. This thread could be a good resource/reference for newbies like me in the world of Photography. Hope to learn more from you and the rest of the guys here.:)
jay_alonzo 08-08-2006, 07:14 AM Hi Avery, Al, Carlos, Sundee, Hanz...you're most welcome...Hope to see you again!

Rolando Avecilla 08-08-2006, 10:19 AM Nice... I do not have to deal with lighting alone.
What I've learned so far is that it's hard to tackle lighting without the use of an incident light meter. The photo below is my attempt to do a Rembrandt lighting:
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/8541/rha4675pp8.jpg
I've used a set of Falcon Eye starter set. I wasn't able to use diffuser on the main light positioned above the model. With the softbox, no shadow was created so I used bare light. The strobe head was on the lowest setting, 1/8 power and the meter reads it as f/5.6. The fill light was positioned infront of the model, beside the camera, leveled with it. The meter reads it as f/4.
I still wasn't sure if I did it right. I've read somewhere that Rembrandt lighting is a combination of butterfly and short lighting. I did follow the article here.
I still have some questions:
1. I measured the combined main and fill lights.. and I still read f/5.6. So I set my camera to ISO 100, 1/60 and f/5.6. Wasn't I supposed to get more than f/5.6, since I am combining f/4 and f/5.6 lights?
2. I metered the background and it reads f/1.0, why is it still visible?
I will be looking for your replies. :D

Bong_Tayamora 10-09-2006, 11:37 PM Hi Jay! Very glad to see you as one of the mods here...
I hope you won't mind me posting your picture here. A candid shot taken from your last year's Photography 101 class. Even a newbie shot couldn't suppress your supreme confidence and character strength.

... actually, the real reason for my upload is I promised Jovie this photo and this seems to be the best way to do it :)
Regards to all! (Hi Avery!)

You guys can't really supress it, can you? btw, i'm sporting a shorter hair now ;)
Bong_Tayamora 10-10-2006, 05:25 PM Gotcha Jay :)
I actually wanted to post Renee Summer's picture or Arnel's (Ansaldo) "brokeback" (your words, see my avatar) Rembrandt portrait taken during your Lighting for Portraiture class. But I remembered signing on something that prohibits me from doing so without prior permission (or in Arnel's case, his permission).
Just recently bought a light stand, white umbrella and an adaptor from last week's Hidalgo rummage sale. I've been meaning to push my SB800's effectiveness by using it off-camera (ala strobist, kahit man lang sa form :) )
Glad to see it's the same getup you recommended for a newbie lighting setup. Expect a few questions from my end. Thanks.
BTW, any PRODUCT Photography class this November?
Christopher Ramos 03-02-2007, 11:15 AM Galing mag lecture si Sir Jay, attend ka sa kanya ng Primer for Lighting, tapos attend ka ng lectures niya sa mga specific subjects like protrait, food, products...
to Sir Jay: Sir, Balik ako syo ulit some other time, pag may portrait lecture ka na ulit.
basil carating 03-31-2007, 11:02 AM nice piece jay, will you be answering questions here that you would normally do in your workshops-meaning we get expert coachings for free? thanks
jay_alonzo 04-02-2007, 06:59 PM So how are you doing with your present get up, Bong? Any images that you would like to share taken with your set up? :)
Gotcha Jay :)

Bong_Tayamora 04-02-2007, 09:20 PM Jay, how I wish there is something worthwhile I could share here from my "strobist" setup. But I have been languishing in this sea of corporate slavery for quite some time now that I feel I need to re-attend your lighting classes to remember my basics.
But thanks to your most wanted inquiry on my setup that I now feel reinvigorated to take them out their boxes and start using them again. Hopefully, i'll be able to shoot something meaningful with them and take shameless advantage of your presence here for some C&C :).
So how are you doing with your present get up, Bong? Any images that you would like to share taken with your set up? :)
