View Full Version : Pentax Lenses/Accessories availability and pricing.
Randall Cipriano 03-01-2007, 10:20 PM I just passed by Camerahaus Glorietta tonight to get a well needed extra battery, I took a snap of the lenses available there.

DA 16-45/4
DA 50-200/4-5.6
DA 14/2.8
DA 12-24/4
DFA 100/2.8 Macro
DFA 50/2.8 Macro
FA 50/1.4
FA 35-80/4-5.6
FA J 28-80/3.5-5.6
I also saw a couple of old FTZ flashes with an AF360FGZ(SRP P12,500), what looks like flash extension cords, a D-BG2 Grip(SRP P8,350), a couple of D-LI150 batteries(SRP P2,195), Remote Control E & Fs, and I think the magnifying viewfinder loupe and alternative focusing screens.
They will give discounts ranging from P100-P1000 or more and especially to cash buyers.
:)
PS. Sorry, I was asking the pricelist for their lenses, but they didn't have any. I was too lazy to ask each lens' price.

Jamie Sy 03-01-2007, 10:27 PM Randall, is that magnifying vf loupe for the K100D? I called camerahaus the other day and sharon said they didn't have one.
Thought you bought the AF540FGZ today! :D Maybe next time!

Randall Cipriano 03-01-2007, 10:33 PM Hehe, still no budget. :(
I still need to buy a grip first. Besides, I'm really not into flash photography... yet. :) I think I'll be better of with the 360 instead.
I think the loupe can be used on both the K10D and the K100D since it's just an eyecup type attachment.
And, and, and... I'm slowly but surely saving up for a star! :Scared:
Jamie Sy 03-01-2007, 11:20 PM Did you ask how much that eyecup is? It costs P1,320 in Sanly and I'm pretty sure it's cheaper at Camerahaus.
Good luck on that DA* lens!!

Randall Cipriano 03-01-2007, 11:28 PM Sorry Jamie, I just saw it behind the counter beside the D-LI150 batteries. I'm not even sure if it really was the magnifying loupe. I just saw the viewfinder illustration on the box, same as the one I saw at the Sanly booth in PWM.
Goodluck to me too. :)
kenneth_escalona 03-01-2007, 11:29 PM Hey guys. it seem s to me when you do your window shopping camerahaus sells you the lowest price. When i'm asking they give a 1thou difference from what youv'ed said. DAYA=p. Any way almost everyday nasa Glorieta ako galing work just to release stress.
Anyway like Randall said save up for the DA*. Also does the FTZ flash work on the K100D?
Randall Cipriano 03-01-2007, 11:38 PM I think It'll work only in Full Auto. The FTZ flashes are TTL flashes. The KxD series cameras only work with P-TTL. Only the 200, 360, and 540 are P-TTL.
Sigma has P-TTL versions of their 500s but aren't fully compatible with the K10D (wireless flash through onboard RTF won't work, 500 to 500 wireless flash should still work though).
I think Sunpak and Soligor also have P-TTL flashes but they're not really in wide distribution around here.
Jamie Sy 03-01-2007, 11:42 PM Kenneth, flirt a little bit!!! haha!!! I call Sharon... Ate Shawi but am not sure if it works really. :D

kenneth_escalona 03-01-2007, 11:52 PM Jamie, I'll try that tommorow and ask again. Maybe I'll wear my super desente look suite and try asking. =p
kenneth_escalona 03-01-2007, 11:59 PM Anybody got an idea how much adobe lightroom cost in the Philippines and where i can buy one? Also my dad has this old yashica camera and a two pair of flashes. One Yashica and the other Panasonic. I was wondering if the panasonic flash will work on K100D? i'm just too afraid to try that i might damage my camera. Also do you have any tags at DPreview for a compilation of flash compatibility to other cameras?
Thanks in advance.=)
hubert_tan 03-03-2007, 04:37 PM what is the telephone number of Camerahaus? Do you they any other branches aside from Glorietta?

hubert_tan 03-03-2007, 05:18 PM Thanks Randall. Just called Camerahaus SM North. Price of K10d is
50,990 body
57,990 with 18-55mm lens
12 months to pay
DA 50-200mm lens is 15,500, no installment
Pentax showroom quoted me
59,000 with kit lens
79,000 with kits lens and DA 50-200mm
12 months to pay
Between the two, who is the better dealer? Also, does Pentax have a walk around lens like a 18-200 or 18-135mm?
Thanks.
Randall Cipriano 03-03-2007, 05:30 PM My vote goes to Camerahaus.
Currently, Pentax has no lens in production with the range you specified. Pentax was(is) generally a producer of some of the best primes. It's only recently Pentax is filling the gap with zooms.
You can order the Sigma 18-200 and 18-125 at JTPhoto for the Pentax KAF Mount.
The 16-45/4 + 50-200/4-5.6 is a nice combo. :)
Pentax will be releasing it's new premium zooms in a few weeks though:
16-50/2.8
50-135/2.8
Later this year they're scheduled to release the 60-250/4, and a 17-70 and 70-300 combo.
hubert_tan 03-03-2007, 06:31 PM Do you know the price of the 16-45/4?
Randall Cipriano 03-03-2007, 06:44 PM Don't know the local price is, but Camerahaus Glorietta has it.
Doc Mark was selling a spare 16-45/4 (brand new) for P13.5K only.
josephnoelreyes 03-03-2007, 07:00 PM hi randall,
just curious. why camerahaus over pentax showroom/sanly corp? is it because of the price difference only or are there other considerations? thanks!
joey reyes
Randall Cipriano 03-03-2007, 07:06 PM Sanly is too overpriced. Case in point:
AF540FGZ Flash
Sanly = 31.5K
Camerahaus = 22.5K
Though, Doc Vic reports they do have excellent lens cleaning services.
willy_palacios 03-03-2007, 07:24 PM how about these, how much po diyan?
K100D
12-24
10-17
18-55
Sigma 18-200
Nat Pagayonan 03-03-2007, 08:40 PM can anyone here confirm if camerahaus is still selling the pentax DS2? if so, how much? thanks in advance.
Randall Cipriano 03-03-2007, 09:20 PM Sigma 18-200/3-5-6.3 @ P19,900 JTPhotoWorld (http://www.jtphotoworld.com/products/pricelist/Product%20Price%20List%2020060903%20Sigma.pdf)
I saw the DS2 at Camerahaus at P31,900 for the kit.
Jamie Sy 03-03-2007, 09:39 PM I don't think they ever had that model on stock. Still on display as of today is the DS and K10D. For some reason, I don't see them stocking K100Ds anymore.
can anyone here confirm if camerahaus is still selling the pentax DS2? if so, how much? thanks in advance.
Jamie Sy 03-03-2007, 09:42 PM Camerahaus price is Php16,990 and Sanly is over Php20K.
Do you know the price of the 16-45/4?
Randall Cipriano 03-03-2007, 09:43 PM Was that the DS? I remember seeing a 2? Or was that the DL2?
Jamie Sy 03-03-2007, 09:51 PM If you're saying just recently it must be a DS. I went there tonight and they really don't have that magnifying loupe for the K100D. :(
Looks like I have to get it from Sanly. :( :(
Was that the DS? I remember seeing a 2? Or was that the DL2?
josephnoelreyes 03-03-2007, 10:17 PM the 9K difference can already buy a grip for the k10. malaki nga.
Sanly is too overpriced. Case in point:
AF540FGZ Flash
Sanly = 31.5K
Camerahaus = 22.5K
Though, Doc Vic reports they do have excellent lens cleaning services.
kenneth_escalona 03-03-2007, 11:09 PM ist DL was the only Pentax camera i saw today at SM MOA Camerahaus. Cost about 29Thou Zero interest.
kenneth_escalona 03-03-2007, 11:11 PM Hey Jamie, have you tried asking camerahaus if they can place you an order for the magnifying loupe?
hubert_tan 03-05-2007, 04:25 PM Don't know the local price is, but Camerahaus Glorietta has it.
Doc Mark was selling a spare 16-45/4 (brand new) for P13.5K only.
Doc Mark still selling?
Jamie Sy 03-05-2007, 06:29 PM @hubert - - I was able to buy the lens before Doc Mark left the country.

Thanks for your reply. Might just order one from Supereast asia. They are selling it for 16k cash.
kenneth_escalona 03-05-2007, 09:20 PM To all Pentax Users who wish to buy lenses or looking for one try visiting this link http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/photographers-marketplace
Jamie Sy 03-05-2007, 09:46 PM Doc Vic said they can go as low as Php15K for this lens. You might want to try to get some more discount....:)

bongmanayon 03-06-2007, 08:31 AM I have never tried Camerahaus service (cleaning etc.); does all the branches receive items for servicing or cleaning? Or you have to go to the main or one particular branch?
So far I have used Sanly for some of my cleaning requirements but they no longer accept at the branches (SM North or SM Megamall) only at the main shop in Cubao which can be a hassle at times (consider that often the free time to do so is lunch time and whoever is in charge is out to lunch).
victor_vesuna 03-06-2007, 12:29 PM so far the reviews for the Pentax 16-45 mm f4 is ok
Randall Cipriano 04-12-2007, 01:22 AM Someone is selling a Samsung GX1S (Pentax DS2) for those who might be interested.
http://tipidpc.com/viewitem.php?iid=867323
marlon ordonez 04-12-2007, 06:30 AM Bong,
Last time I went for service at Camerahaus, they accepted my camera at the Glorietta branch - problem is it takes a lot longer if you do it this way - I think they do pickups/deliveries once a week to/from their main (Dasmarinas) office, so it adds a week or two to the wait. Otherwise, the actual service could take maybe just a few days if you bring your stuff directly to their Dasma office.
Hope this helps.
Cheers!
Roger Pantuca 06-05-2007, 08:43 AM From Pentax Megamall a few weeks ago:
DA 40mm Limited - 15,840
FA 43mm Limited - 21,770
I noticed the prices are sometimes different between SM North and Megamall branches. By as much as a few thousand. It might be a good idea to check both before buying. :Scared: :BlackEye:
Randall Cipriano 06-06-2007, 11:57 AM Wow may stock na pala sila ng DA40 pancake.
Jamie Sy 06-06-2007, 12:57 PM Hi,
Sorry for my laziness (I could call Sanly or Camerahaus naman di ba) but does anybody know the latest price of the AF540 FGZ? Sana less than P20K naman! :D
Thanks!
Randall Cipriano 06-06-2007, 07:53 PM 20K eksakto sa Camerahaus. Dunno about Sanly right now. Before it was P19.5K. But I think they raised their prices again. :s
Jamie Sy 06-06-2007, 11:16 PM Wow, P20k na lang sa Camerahaus? That's a big difference from the last time I asked...siguro P30++k pa nun e.
Anybody care to enlighten me on the differences of the AF540FGZ and the Sigma DG Super flash?
Thanks!
Roger Pantuca 06-20-2007, 05:55 PM From Pentax Megamall:
FA 43mm Limited - 21,770
I was going to buy this today but...... :Scared: ....... it's a display unit!
Oh well, maybe next time when new stocks come in. Does anybody have this lens? Is it that much better than an old A50/2?

Tsk...that's the quirk we have here. In the US or Canada (not sure about the rest of the world) that would be priced cheaper as a display unit or an "open box." I have gotten a couple of lenses from Adorama and Samy's that way. Technically they're still brand new because they have never left the store but it was opened and handled already.
And yeah, anything else among Pentax primes has got to be better than the 50/2 :D
Randall Cipriano 06-20-2007, 08:57 PM Sanly is very disappointing.
They raised the prices of everything again. The 540fgz is at 24K+ again with the so called "discounts" na.
Camerahaus is cheaper again.

Is that the chrome lens?I've seen that on display since 1996
Roger Pantuca 06-21-2007, 10:14 AM Yeah, I thought they always have stock since the 2 Limited lenses are always on display. But they look like they've been there for a while. The glass isn't as clear as you would expect from a brand new lens. In fact the 43mm has bits of hair inside the glass as if someone who opened it just had a haircut. I joked with the staff and said tell your technician to wear a hair net next time. :Scared::Grin::Thinking:
Franz A.D. Morales 06-21-2007, 02:24 PM Does anyone know where I can purchase a vertical grip for the K100D? Like the one here... http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fownuser.com.tw%2Fn_K100D_ 1.htm&langpair=zh%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools

That lens is very old na,I was planning to buy it for my MZ3 an autofocus film camera.
Jamie Sy 06-21-2007, 10:38 PM Huh? Camerahaus was quoting me P24K for the AF540FGZ. Sana mga P19K na lang.

Larry Monserate Piojo 06-25-2007, 06:25 PM just when i decided to get myself a 50-200mm, out of stock at sanly! no wonder it's a quallity lens! i haven't checked camerahaus yet, though... but i'm guessing they too has no more stock. tsk, tsk... good thing though, i still don't have cash! hehe.
how's the DA* lenses coming along?
Roger Pantuca 06-26-2007, 01:19 PM I think I saw it at Megamall about 2-3 weeks ago. It's really small for such a long range, almost the same size as the kit lens. Seems we have to wait for new stocks to arrive. I've been waiting for the lens review at photozone, it's been put on hold due to a defect in the test copy.
Randall Cipriano 06-26-2007, 08:09 PM You can see my previous post here (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=4579) about the DA50-200.
Amazing little lens.
victor_vesuna 06-26-2007, 09:24 PM Do you want to see sample shots of the DA50-200mm? it's on display in all GNC stores nationwide, and was even printed in Men's Health Philippine Edition Mag and Action and Fitness Magazine, I took the shots of Ali Peak and Ali Borromeo using that lens and Pentax *istDs
Roger Pantuca 06-26-2007, 09:48 PM awesome stuff..... how did they make it so small? that's what i like about pentax lenses, so small yet so good. :)

larrypaz 06-30-2007, 03:14 PM Research & research, i have finally made up my mind, i'm getting K10D body. looking for one-time-purchase lens that will suit my need. Beginner here. For travel, scenery and street photography. My options:
(1) 50-200mm (pentax) best for beginners?
(2) i ve been researching also for Tamron AF 18-200 (or 250) f/3.5-5.6v hidalgo however says it won't mount for Pentax they only have Tamron for Nik & Can. Probably available somewhere, shall i look further or take option 1?
Newb here, Advise please... (or am i in the wrong thread?)

Hi Larry,
I guess this thread is "safe" enough :D
1) The 50-200 is a good lens (wish I had one...)!
2) Both Tamron 18-200 & 18-250 has versions that mounts on a Pentax (see here (http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/diII.asp)). It is only that they rarely ever import or stock stuff for Pentax. Even Sigma offers Pentax mount only on special order.
My take? If you really want one NOW you cannot go wrong with the 50-200 (should be available in Sanly or Camerahaus). On the other hand, if you want the range of the 18-250, then a special order or buying online or pauwi are your options. Staying with the 50-200 is good because it complements the 18-55 kit lens. Going with the 18-250 makes the kit lens redundant (like you might as well buy your K10D body only).
Bong
PS I think Henry's has a Tamron 28-200 for a Pentax sitting there somewhere-- saw one before; I don't know how that would fit in your scheme of things.
francisgan 06-30-2007, 03:46 PM @Sir Larry - I would stay away from super-zooms like the Tamron 18-200/250 if possible. They are versatile and easy to use, but their optical quality is usually bad. I have a Tokina 24-200mm and that lens suffers from heavy barrel and pinchusion distortions, flare, and focus-hunting. Once you get more serious in photography, you will definitely notice their flaws. I would suggest a dual-lens combo: a standard zoom and a telephoto zoom. You can also add a normal prime like the Pentax FA 50mm 1.4 for portrait shots if you like. The Pentax DA 16-45mm 4 gets rave reviews. It's a bit pricy though, but it is something that you can grow with (it's good for beginners and serious hobbyists). If you're main purpose is to do travel, landscapes, and street, I think a standard zoom is more advisable instead of getting a telephoto.
Pentax-mount third party lenses are hard to come by. Usually they are per order basis. You may want to check Henry's and ask if they can get the Tamron lens you need. You will have to place a downpayment though.
francisgan 06-30-2007, 04:20 PM @Sir Bong - Speaking of third-party lenses, may naalala ako. :) Nung pumunta ako sa booth ng Sanly nung Photoworld, may nakausap akong isang staff. Nagsesetup pa lang sila at that time (morning of first day). Medyo weird to hear that from a staff of Sanly. But still, gagana kaya itong tactic na ito sa Henry's and Avenue? Sapak siguro ang aabutin ko. Hehe.
victor_vesuna 06-30-2007, 04:37 PM awesome stuff..... how did they make it so small? that's what i like about pentax lenses, so small yet so good. :)
Lenses for digital cameras are usually smaller than their film counterparts
I'll rate the 50-200mm at 6/10 in terms of performance, the 200mm range is not that good tthe best 200mm lens that I have used is the FA*200mm F2.8ED(IF) which I burrowed from a Japanese friend, the Macro 200mm F4 ED is also an excellent prime.
kenneth_escalona 06-30-2007, 04:57 PM I agree 50-200mm is the best zoom lens i bought counterpart with the kit lens 18-55mm.
larrypaz 06-30-2007, 09:09 PM Hi Larry,

bongmanayon 07-07-2007, 05:45 PM Heads up! There are 4 lens undergoing CLA in the used shop across from Jude's place in Hidalgo: SMCP M 24mm, 35mm, 100mm & 200mm. They were dirty, moldy and grimy when I looked at them. They were about to go under the screw driver when the guy showed them to me.
Roger Pantuca 07-08-2007, 10:23 PM Hmmm.... photozone didn't like the 50-200 (link (http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/pentax_50200_456/index.htm)).
bongmanayon 07-08-2007, 11:17 PM Hmmm.... photozone didn't like the 50-200 (link (http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/pentax_50200_456/index.htm)).
"This lens was purchased in an average shop. The first tests indicated a problem with this original sample so I send it to the Pentax Europe service who returned "a" lens 7 weeks later. As an average customer you would expect the lens to be "within specs" now. The quality of the tested (serviced) sample is dismal. I've send a message to the Pentax service department to comment on the obvious problems. Till then I've decided to withdraw the verdict."
Klaus' verdict was based on a probably bad copy. Nevertheless, photozone has been known to be critical and objective in its review--numbers factor in a lot apart from the subjective human evaluator. At the end, categorically, the 50-200 is an entry level consumer lens...its not the DA* so to speak. Which still makes it a good buy for its price.
I think I said somewhere (to larrypaz 'ata) that I wanted one--I still do. Right now, I got its "el-cheapo" Sigma equivalent (Sigma 55-200/4-5.6 DC) which I managed to use side by side with Randall's 50-200. You guessed it, the Pentax gave better results (you have to find it in the Pentax users post your photo thread; look for the Laguna Loop photos of Randall--I never bothered posting mine...).
Randall Cipriano 07-09-2007, 12:03 AM Yep, I love this lens. Even if and when I finally get my hands on a DA* 60-250mm f/4 someday, I won't let this lens go. :)
Here's some other photos I took using this lens. The sharpness and contrast is just amazing for the price.

Parang wala, sir Franz. Usually standard zooms end with 70/80mm, then the telephoto zooms start with 80/100mm. The closest, I think, is the DA* 50-135mm f/2.8.
Franz A.D. Morales 07-09-2007, 10:15 AM How much does the DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 cost sir Francis? That would complement well with what I currently have...

I have the APO macro super version(older version). At 300mm, you have to stop down atleast f/8 to get really sharp results. The color is great and the bokeh is also ok. One thing though, the zoom ring on my lens is a bit "sticky" - not smooth like my Pentax zooms.
Here's one @ 300mm:

Well, unless you get a bad sample, the the APO DG version should be atleast as good. Another option would be the Tamron 70-300 LDi. Some prefer this because it's suppose to be sharper at 300mm than the Sigma. Still, for versatility(i.e size and weight) and color, I'll have to go with the DA50-200mm.

francisgan 07-10-2007, 08:00 AM Here be the review at photozone:
Verdict. "The Sigma AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG macro came close to a surprise but it still hasnīt won the cigar. It delivered pretty decent results in most aspects, specifically at 70mm and 200mm, but at 300mm the border resolution is nothing short of dismal - certainly not apochromatic as claimed by Sigma (nor would we really expect that from such a budget lens). Nonetheless you may argue that the center performance of the lens is on a very high level throughout the range and for many tele applications your main subject is often located close to the center so the border problems may not be all that obvious in the real life. As such it still remains an interesting budget solution. If you prefer a sharp border to border quality look elsewhere though ... and prepare yourself to invest quite a bit more."
For the full review, see http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/sigma_70300_456/index.htm
This new version has a special DG (Digital) coating to minimize reflections and ghosting for digital sensors. The official distributor of Sigma, JT Photoworld sells this lens at P11,800. So if its really brand new, at P6,000 this is a steal. :)
Franz A.D. Morales 07-10-2007, 08:16 AM Thanks guys... I'm just weighing my options as of now... I'd still rather have the DA 50-200mm of course... the DA really complements with what I have eh... esep esep...

The Pentaxian in me would want the original DA 50-200 (or maybe the DA*...) but for practical purposes and a good price why not the Sigma? That's the logic behind my ending up with a Sigma 55-200 instead. Sigma as brand gets mixed reviews, I noticed--you either hate it or love it. It also has a bad rep of having an inconsistent QC...but then the 'Pinoy' thing of being able to paw the item before hand may be a good thing.
Franz A.D. Morales 07-10-2007, 09:02 AM Of course I'd rather have the Pentax DA... the DA* is too steep for me, but one can dream... :) Is your Sigma 55-200 a good lens Bong? I feel so limited kasi, I have the kit lens which is the 18-55(my only AF lens), a 50mm and a 28 mm then a 100-200mm na... sometimes I want to shoot in-between 55 and 100 but I can't... which is why I'm looking to get something versatile and to complement what I already have...
Roger Pantuca 07-10-2007, 09:04 AM I once had the non-DG DL version of the Sigma 70-300 when I was still using a Canon 300D. One thing I noticed about it is that the image gets much softer in the long end if you use any kind of filter on it. So the best way to use it is without a filter and the hood attached.
I posted some sample shots when I sold it. The APO version is supposed to be better, I think its a bargain at 6k if its bnew.

I'd say pwede na (but that's the Pinoy mantra of mediocrity). The DA is better, I mentioned elsewhere that I managed to shoot side by side with Randall and his photos came out better--esp at the long end. I notice the Sigma take longer to focus as it hunts down focusing in & out before it locks onto the subject. There are times I switch to MF just to get it over with; I'm not sure if Nols mentioned something like this too on his 70-300. Of my 55-200 is the partner of the Sigma 18-55 which is as cheap as cheap gets (go online and they're usually sold as a tandem for a bargain).

Nope, the 55-200 does not have macro or close focusing capability. Oh, I can't remember about the DA...
Franz A.D. Morales 07-10-2007, 09:41 AM Hay, never thought that choosing which lens to buy would be so hard...
francisgan 07-10-2007, 10:00 AM Hmmm... but I'd also like to have a macro lens as well, the 70-300mm has macro... :)
According to reviews, the macro capabilities of this lens is limited to 200-300mm. At 200mm, it goes down to 1:2.9 and at 300mm, it's down to 1:2. This is good stuff for a cheap zoom lens, although AF will surely hunt and at 300mm, it wouldn't be as sharp as you may want it to be. In order to get a really sharp macro shot with a 1:1 magnification, a dedicated macro lens is needed. Currently, Pentax has 2. There is also a Sigma 50mm macro, which is the cheapest at around 15k. Plus, there are the Sigma 70mm, 105mm, and 150mm macros. Comparable macro lenses are also available from Tamron and Tokina. Hehe. I find buying lenses more brain-twisting than buying camera bodies.
Franz A.D. Morales 07-10-2007, 10:05 AM @francis: true... a truly tortuous affair this lens buying... hmmm, so for macro, I'm better off getting a dedicated macro? I intend to use the macro for insect and other small flora and fauna shots... but first things first, a versatile lens in the 50-200 or 300 range... haaaay....
Roger Pantuca 07-10-2007, 10:12 AM Hehe yup it's hard. Franz, i dunno what DG and DL means, just that I read there are at least 3 versions of it: non-DG, DG, APO, etc?? The closeup feature is a bit hard to use hand-held since it can be switched from 200mm to 300mm only. Was able to use it only with tripod, but maybe SR will help.
Franz A.D. Morales 07-10-2007, 10:17 AM Roger, what do you mean by it can be switched from 200m to 300mm only? I do intend to use a tripod ar gorillapod when I do macro close ups... SR can only do so much IMO... :)
totie.bruno 07-10-2007, 10:29 AM @franz: you said in your previous reply that you had a 50mm... as a starter, i guess you can use it for macro... then decide from there what range are you really aiming for your macro shots...
francisgan 07-10-2007, 10:32 AM @Roger: Nice... what does DG and DL mean anyway?
The DL (Dispersion Low?) is the most basic of the 3 variants and the cheapest.
The APO (Apochromatic) is the DL, but with additional 2 low dispersion glass elements.
The DG (Digital Grade?) is the APO, but with special coatings to minimize ghosts and reflections for digital sensors.
Franz A.D. Morales 07-10-2007, 10:39 AM Thanks totie for enlightening me hehe... I got nothing about Sigma lenses! :) The 50mm is kinda good for macro, but doesn't get the "real up-close in your face close up shots" that i am pushing for... but it suffices... kaya I'm looking for a lens in the 50-200 or 300 range muna... next time na lang the macro lens hehe
bongmanayon 07-10-2007, 11:03 AM @francis: true... a truly tortuous affair this lens buying... hmmm, so for macro, I'm better off getting a dedicated macro? In that case don't try to force whatever lens you choose to be the swiss knife of sorts, you'll only lose out on something. That's the whole point to having a DSLR with interchangeable lenses. I have an old SMCP A 35-70/4 MF lens for macro/close focusing purposes so my later zooms does not have to have that feature.
Roger Pantuca 07-10-2007, 11:14 AM Roger, what do you mean by it can be switched from 200m to 300mm only? I do intend to use a tripod ar gorillapod when I do macro close ups... SR can only do so much IMO... :)
There is a Macro/Normal switch on the lens. You can only switch to macro when the zoom range is between 200mm and 300mm; otherwise the switch is locked. In macro setting the lens barrel extends much much longer and you cannot twist the zoom ring to go below 200mm. Once in macro setting you cannot just switch back to Normal; you have to retract the lens barrel first. When switched back to Normal you can now zoom below 200mm. Took me a while to figure it out since I got it 2nd hand.
Roger Pantuca 07-10-2007, 11:18 AM I agree with Bong, the macro feature isn't the reason I would get the lens because at 200mm to 300mm it isn't that much sharper than the kit lens with a closeup filter. And the kit lens is much easier to hand hold.
Franz A.D. Morales 07-10-2007, 11:27 AM @Roger: Oh I see... I kinda get it hehe, I guess this is one of those things you have to experience first hand to understand fully...:)
@Bong: Well, as totie pointed out earlier, I can use my existing SMCP 50mm MF for macro/close ups while I don't have a macro yet, so no rush in that... as for the 50-200 range lens I'm looking for... I'll be using it mostly for the 50-100mm range it offers... I have a 100-200 though, but I am having a hard time with the exposure on it, being manual and all...
totie.bruno 07-10-2007, 12:15 PM @Franz: maximize first the current setup you have and then move from there... and probably by the time you have a "new range" of macro lens, and i also have my dslr, you can pass that 50mm to me :D
just joking...
Franz A.D. Morales 07-10-2007, 12:18 PM @Totie: Nice one... hahaha:)
totie.bruno 07-10-2007, 12:21 PM @Franz: that macro capability of my s3is i'll surely be missing once i jump into dslr upgrade...
Franz A.D. Morales 07-10-2007, 12:42 PM @totie: True, I did miss the macro capabilities of my PnS when I jumped ship, but the quality...oh god the quality... of a photo taken with a dslr is worth it! To some extent, my k100's macro function works well enough much like a PnS, but of course you always strive for more... hence my search for better lenses:)

noliperfecto 07-10-2007, 01:15 PM @ Bong: I have not noticed any focus hunting with my Sigma (ofcourse, I mostly use it in bright outdoors). It does take a while to focus from nearest to infinity though. Like I told you at Mcdo, I feel the Ds' motor is a bit under-powered for these full frame lenses- much more if it's as big and heavy as the Sigma.
@Franz: Another option for macro would be to buy close focus filter (is this right?) for your kit lens or the DA 50-200mm. I've seen some very nice pictures using this combination.

Me too... which is why I love tinkering with my MF lenses in Manual mode(is there any other mode for MF lenses ba?) I learn a great deal!
bongmanayon 07-10-2007, 01:36 PM @ Bong: I have not noticed any focus hunting with my Sigma (ofcourse, I mostly use it in bright outdoors). It does take a while to focus from nearest to infinity though. Like I told you at Mcdo, I feel the Ds' motor is a bit under-powered for these full frame lenses- much more if it's as big and heavy as the Sigma.
Okay, I can't exactly remember what we talked about since McDo's ice cream machine broke down ... :D
At least for both our 70-300 & 55-200 the focusing tends to be heavy with our DS.
bongmanayon 07-10-2007, 01:37 PM is there any other mode for MF lenses ba?
Magic?
You know something we don't? :D
vincelocsin 07-10-2007, 07:48 PM any advice on a good wide-angle lens?
thinking of getting one before getting a tele.. :D
28mm isn't exactly considered a wide angle since in a 1.5x crop you get a 42mm lens. Yet this FOV is considered optimum and equivalent to a human's natural FOV. If you are interested in this FOV, I am selling at EBay philippines my Tokina RMC 28mm f/2.8. It's very sharp and is highly regarded in steephill's tests. See here: http://www.pbase.com/steephill/28mms

Franz A.D. Morales 07-12-2007, 08:51 AM Where can I buy old manual Pentax lenses? Do they have a lot in stock in Hidalgo? I'm preferring manual lenses now instead of AF ones... cheaper and I often use MF anyway... Thanks!

Can't remember where I posted it but there were 4 "M" (no "A" function) lenses due for cleaning in one of the used shops in Hidalgo: a 28mm, 35mm, 100(?)mm and a 200mm. It was dirty and moldy and the technician said it would undergo cleaning. That was last Saturday when Paeng & I were at Bahay Nakpil. I have in mind to return there really soon.
Franz A.D. Morales 07-12-2007, 09:07 AM @bong: hmmm... how much would they cost most likely? I'm thinking of getting manual prime lenses, while having AF for the zooms... I have a lens without the "A" function, and I enjoy using it!:) Any idea where else we can find old manual pentax lenses?

Argh! It's the shop across from June Dimayuga's ... ek, we need a map. Randall!

I haven't bought anything online too, but I've heard that B&H is a very good seller. Kahit na medyo mas mahal siya sa iba, at least you are sure that you will get what you bought hassle-free. Ang pinakaproblem lang ay yung tax sa customs. Taga talaga. You have to haggle with them. I've read na meron bumili ng camera (400D) online, tapos na-hold sa customs. Hinihingi ng customs is around 6k! Natawaran yata nila into half. Yung mga iba, bumibili online tapos papadala nila sa relatives abroad. Then pag umuwi, hand-carry nalang.
Franz A.D. Morales 07-12-2007, 02:32 PM How about Henry's? I saw they're cheaper... customs talaga hassle kahit kelan! anyone here has connections with customs?:)

Oo nga, sino may kakilala sa customs?
Sir Franz, if you buy online, check mo muna ratings ng shop sa www.resellerratings.com (http://www.resellerratings.com). Maraming fraudulent shops kasi naglilipana.
Randall Cipriano 07-12-2007, 02:45 PM I was considering buying the K10D from B&H way back in December. See here. (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=2922&highlight=buying+online)

Will do... but Henry's and B&H are the two most recommended in PentaxForums.com :) Will check out the link too though...
@Randall: Thanks for the link! But before i take the plunge with ordering online, I have to make sure it's safe talaga and that the items I want aren't available here:)
bongmanayon 07-12-2007, 03:11 PM It's safe. Sorta.
I've bought stuff online sa KEH.com, Adorama.com and various sellers in Ebay, in all cases it was shipped through a friend who hand carried the items. I'm looking at Henry's in Ebay; they have a lot of good used or refurb items.
An interesting place is http://www.sigma4less.com ...they have Pentax stuff plus older models of Sigmas and Tamrons.
noliperfecto 07-12-2007, 03:32 PM How about Henry's? I saw they're cheaper... customs talaga hassle kahit kelan! anyone here has connections with customs?:)
I've dealt with Henry's before - no problems. B&H is highly rated although I haven't purchased anything from them online. The following online sellers are also ok - KEH.com, digitalfotoclub.com.
Customs is not really a hassle as long as you pay the proper tax. Ang hassle is our postal system - yan ang matagal.

Last year I purchased my Sigma 24-135mm from Cameta Auctions (through EBay). Paid using PayPal, and in a week's time, got Post Office notice to pay duties and pick up lens at Pasay! I was so surprised by the efficient delivery, but of course Cameta charged $57 for shipping and handling. Payment of duties was very straightforward and totalled about 25% of the total cost (including shipping). But the lens still cost me only half of what JT World was quoting it for.

i got my sigma 24-135mm from cameta too. my nephew in the US did the transaction and his brother hand-carried it on the way back here. $99 plus US shipping.
vincelampa 07-13-2007, 08:46 AM Medyo off topic: I just browsed through the Pentax showroom in Megamall yesterday. I asked about the availability of the DA* and the saleslady there said that they are available for ordering already. The 16-45 is at 45K and the 50-135 is at 50K.

We're sort of expecting it to cost that much. FA*'s for example, cost around that much USED in EBay.
Franz A.D. Morales 07-13-2007, 09:06 AM @totie: I'm getting a 50-200mm too, ok lang if I have the kit lens, 5mm lang naman nagoverlap eh hehe:) Then maybe a 10-17mm(meron ba nito?) or something like that... then a macro lens... then primes all the way!:)

sabagay... but i'm more interested on wide angle of it... imagine it's 16mm compared to 18mm of kit lens...
Franz A.D. Morales 07-13-2007, 09:30 AM @totie: True true... too bad I haven't thought of that when I got mine hehe... but so far what I have still suits my purpose:)
Kelan ka ba kukuha? Excited na ko for you eh! hahaha I remember when I got mine kasi, the feeling is beggaring description!
totie.bruno 07-13-2007, 09:48 AM But for that whopping 45k price, I think I'll just also settle for the kit lens. And maximize first the use of it. :D
This month is the last payment of an appliance I acquired through CC. And I'm still waiting to settle it first and probably wait for the k100d super to comes out or before Sept. 17 (my daughter's 7th birthday) whichever comes first.
For the meantime, I'm still enjoying the zoom capability of my canon s3is. :D
Franz A.D. Morales 07-13-2007, 09:55 AM Hehe you getting the Super? or just waiting for it to come out for the price drop of the K100D?:)
Enjoy your Canon s3is! Once you go Pentax, you never you never go back! hehe
totie.bruno 07-13-2007, 10:00 AM Why not? If the price factor is not that big from the current price trend I followed all these months. And besides, it's much newer. :)
But I'm also considering the price drop of k100d that will be going once it hits the road. :D
I'll still keep my S3IS even if I get the Pentax. :)

dfa 50mm macro is around P23.000.
the da* lens' prices will not be far from what is quoted in the internet. star lenses will indeed be expensive.

Oo nga. Pati primes nila mahal din. :( Mas better match siguro yung Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS with the Pentax DA 16-50mm f/2.8. Pareho kasi sila for cropped sensors. Pero mas mura pa rin ang Pentax... plus weathersealed pa!
Randall Cipriano 07-13-2007, 11:03 AM The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS isn't an L hehe. The DA* is designed to be in the same caliber as the L's. The EF16-35mm f/2.8L II is weatherprotected, I just don't know if it's weathersealed attached to the 1D like the DA* attached to a K10D. :)

Roger Pantuca 07-13-2007, 02:52 PM Pricing of the DA* 16-50mm is not bad if it's 45k SRP.

Not to mention it's a lot cheaper :) Guess we are on the same boat on this one. So far the adapters sold on the market are only adaptable for the crop sensors. And if I do get this in the future, I'd have to be shooting in manual mode all the time.
francisgan 07-20-2007, 12:59 PM Not to mention it's a lot cheaper :) Guess we are on the same boat on this one. So far the adapters sold on the market are only adaptable for the crop sensors. And if I do get this in the future, I'd have to be shooting in manual mode all the time.
This is a very hard decision for me. The Canon 35mm is convenient, since I have a 400D and it will complete my 35-85-135 line up. But I really admire the build quality of the Pentax 31mm. Sa picture pa lang, it exudes "perfection" na. I appreciate how it's outer shell is made of metal and the fact that it doesn't have a focusing motor inside (via slotted drive lang). Being autofocus and still being mechanical is almost contradictory. And the FA Limiteds achieve just that. Very nice, indeed. Kaso lang wala akong Pentax DSLR at napakahirap makakita nito sa Pilipinas. At least pag Canon, pwedeng mag-order sa mga Hidalgo boys at a relatively small mark-up. Hehe.
Kahit nagshift na ako, hinihila pa rin ako ng Pentax. Once a Pentaxian, always a Pentaxian! Ang kinakatakot ko lang, baka i-discontinue na nila ang mga FAs, ngayong nasa DA era na. So kailangang makakuha na before it's too late.
Sir Lester, may alam kang pwedeng maging supplier nito sa Pinas?

nope haven't seen the CROSSOVER as of yet. i'll try to check this weekend and let you know if there is available. i am only in munich.
but i saw the shoulder bag of pentax selling for 34.95 euros so that's aroung 2200PHP

i'll let you know by monday.
Franz A.D. Morales 07-20-2007, 03:21 PM @paeng: That's one good looking bag! Is the crossover bigger? Better? Hmmm... I like!

This bag is chic! Look at the curves! Yeah, baby, yeah!
Very stylish, and relatively affordable to boot. Lowepros will look like bricks next to this.

Bong
Sir Bong, that's a great idea. Kailangan ko lang makahanap ng 31mm. Hehe. I'll loose the autofocus, pero ok lang. The reason I shifted is because of the poor availability of Pentax lenses as opposed to Canon's. It turns out hahanap-hanapin ko pa rin ang Pentax. Hehe.
lestercallanta 07-20-2007, 04:36 PM Sir Lester, may alam kang pwedeng maging supplier nito sa Pinas?
No "sir" needed Francis :) Maybe by order basis? I also have the 135 and pretty spoiled by it. And I need the 35 range badly as my normal lens for my 20D, oops, am in the Pentax forum.
Paeng Bonafe 07-20-2007, 04:37 PM here's a pic of the CROSSOVER. pretty much looks like the LowePro Slingshot..

if i see one and find the price to be reasonable. i might get it.
bongmanayon 07-20-2007, 09:22 PM @Paeng...it would look pretty 'interesting' carrying around 5 of those bags through customs

josephnoelreyes 07-20-2007, 11:02 PM Is the design of the Lowepro AW series patented?
malamang patented. check out sanly's SANPRO. a lowepro/pentax crossover imitation. maybe from the same guys that sell mekko bags, imitations of lowepro models.
nah, i want the real stuff.

You're right the original is always the best

Make it doubly interesting! Be sure there are K10Ds in all of them!
Rodney Torres 07-21-2007, 02:46 PM May I ask where I can buy a Low-Angle Finder for the K10D locally? I've been trying to find one. Other brands would be okay. Thank you.
Oh, is there a flash diffuser available for Pentax flashes too? Lke an LSPJ, etc?
Franz A.D. Morales 07-21-2007, 04:10 PM Um, what's the Low-Angle finder for? Is it like the extension for the viewfinder? I'm looking for a viewfinder extension, any idea where I can find one? Also, I'm looking for a shutter remote, which is best? The one with a cable or the IR wireless one? Do both also have remote autofocus? Thanks!:)

Angle viewfinder is an attachment you use so you can take pics looking down. It fits on the camera's view finder. Parang may nakita yata ako sa Sanly's Cubao.
As for shutter remote, I'm using the Canon cable remote which can also be locked for bulb shots.
Nols
Franz A.D. Morales 07-21-2007, 08:15 PM @Noli: Oh, I see!:) About your Canon shutter remote, it has a lock for bulb shots, and you can auto focus as well? Do Pentax remotes have the same features? Which is better. cable remotes or IR wireless remotes? Thanks!
victor_vesuna 07-21-2007, 09:17 PM The scarcity of Pentax lenses and accesories has its positive side also, it made me control my buying impulse.
I find the cable release useful for night photography and taking macro shots.
Franz A.D. Morales 07-21-2007, 09:40 PM True true... it's good Pentax accessories aren't too available... so the cable remote is better than the wireless?
victor_vesuna 07-21-2007, 10:14 PM Well it depends, I find the wireless remote useful in pictures na kasama ako, sometimes I just use the self timer.
Yup when I was still a newbie I accumulated tons of accesories for my Pentax, now it's gathering dust in my cabinet including my right angle view finder , I never had the chance to use it.
Franz A.D. Morales 07-21-2007, 10:21 PM Maybe you can sell some of your unused stuff to me Victor!:)
(like the viewfinder maybe? and a remote? hehe)
I'm thinking to get the cable remote, I feel I might have a hard time with the wireless remote especially with regards to finding a "signal." As you said, if I need to be in the picture too, I can always use the self timer anyway... any thoughts/suggestions on this?
victor_vesuna 07-22-2007, 07:47 AM I sold my unused stuff in the other forum, among which are my Hoya IR Filter 72mm,Tiffen,Tokina and Pentax Macrobellows.
The Pentax right angle viewfinder is very rare, though I find it useless for digital.
THe self timer is better, just invest on the cable release for your macro and nightshots(bulb)

It's easier to lose or misplace a remote.

i agree with sir bong... i almost misplaced mine... suddenly i remember slipping it inside the grip! haha!
Pentax K10D, 55K --- Camerahaus Glorieta! whaaaaaat???
Franz A.D. Morales 07-24-2007, 01:58 PM I got the Canon cable remote already... the ES603-- something something... and it works like a charm! Pentax is weird, their cable remotes are more expensive than their IR ones...

victor_vesuna 07-25-2007, 05:50 AM Are they brand new or demo units used in the last Photoworld?
josephnoelreyes 07-25-2007, 08:40 AM Are they brand new or demo units used in the last Photoworld?
brand new ito bro.
there were only two demo units last photoworld. one was sanly's which ended up for their studio's use and the other one was mine which i volunteered. there were only a few units in the initial delivery last january and all had prior allocations to certain customers. i was there at photoworld first two days.
we can be sure that the stuff they're selling is all brand new. hope this helps. :)

yah, true. FULL CASH for only P42K! creepy! haha! Credit Card price still at P48K. Camerahaus Glorieta still at 54k, or 55k (last sunday :O).
Also got my cable release for P1,288! Tried to negotiate to drop it to P1,000 or P1,200, begged, on bended knees, didn't work. waaah! hehe.
Larry Monserate Piojo 07-25-2007, 10:38 AM Are they brand new or demo units used in the last Photoworld?
they should be brand new... you mean they sell used demo units too???
victor_vesuna 07-25-2007, 02:13 PM they should be brand new... you mean they sell used demo units too???
I didn't say that ha, I was just asking,di kaya nabagsak yan ha ha ha(joke lang ha)
Well Sanly also gave me a nice bargain when they sold the fish eye lens at a very very low price and so far I have no problems with it.
bongmanayon 07-25-2007, 02:36 PM FYI...
I saw a used K10D sitting in the tiangge in Greenhills (the stall's name is Ray-Ray Amer Trading...FWIW). Priced at P33k with a Sigma 18-200 & no SD card. Clean on the outside but I saw dirt in the VF and the lens seemed cloudy/foggy. Didn't check the shutter count though.
Franz A.D. Morales 07-25-2007, 02:38 PM Get it bong!:)
