View Full Version : Rechargeable batteries and Fast Chargers Thread
Al Mendoza 05-19-2006, 11:55 PM .
Any recommendation on what is a reliable, long lasting rechargeable (NIMH)battery and fast charger?
I see Sanyos everywhere also Powerbase, Sony, GP's, any feedback on these brands?
Thanks.
:)
jojosio 05-20-2006, 10:37 AM Be careful in buying the Sanyo NiMh 2500s, they are useless after 6-8 charges, drains very fast... not sure if they're fake or i just bought a defective batch (i have around 20 of them, all dead!)
nino_carandang 05-20-2006, 10:40 AM I've always been using Energizer 2500s. Kinda pricey with the fast charger. But it does a fricking hell of a job with high speed flash settings.
willy_palacios 05-20-2006, 10:42 AM yeah i've read somewhere that there where certain batch of bad sanyo 2500mah's, i guess there's a code for this bad batch of battery.
i have a few 2500's with no problem, the 2200's of the panasonic is the ones i had problems with :(
get a Good fast charger, ones from Sony or Sanyo, i think they can fill your batts in 2 hrs. there are some unkwon brand that can do it in 15 minutes! since re-chargeables are cheap nowadays it would'nt matter if they die sooner coz of fast charging
Al Mendoza 05-20-2006, 02:55 PM :)
thanks for the heads-up on the Sanyo 2500 nimh, I almost bought a bunch of those rechargeables.
Is Hidalgo (Avenue, Mayer, Watsons, Henrys, etc.) the best place to get these batteries, suggestions?
Thanks.

Terence Sysunbin 05-20-2006, 04:47 PM Be careful in buying the Sanyo NiMh 2500s, they are useless after 6-8 charges, drains very fast... not sure if they're fake or i just bought a defective batch (i have around 20 of them, all dead!)
Sanyo 2500's are ok but there are a couple of defective ones circulating in the market I threw away 12 of them. Sanyo admitted that they had deffective batteries out but the nearest sanyo service center is in singapore so I guess I had no choice but to throw mine in the rubbish.
If you want to buy/use sanyo 2500's look at the positive end of the battery terminal there is a blue ring surrounding the tip, pay close attention to the color if its dark blue then its a deffective battery choose the light blue colored ones and you wont have any problems cheers!
malloy cabahug 05-21-2006, 05:15 PM just purchased the fast energizer charger together with energizer 2500. this fast charger i bought fill the 2500 in less than 2 hrs.
as far as battery life (charge-recharge cycle), i dont have got any experience as yet. but, energizer imo is reputed to have good quality batteries. hence, i was convinced to choose energizer over sony, though it cost me more.
Perry Chua 05-23-2006, 04:55 AM I have a friend using the Energizer with the 2500 as well... he seems to like it a lot. The batteries keeps on going and going and going... :)
I am using a Sony fast charger (charges 4 batts in half an hour) and a couple of 2300mah (if I remember correctly) and so far their performance are good for me... but I do not think mine is better compared with the energizers... siguro magandang pang backup since super fast charger nya :)
I also got 4 pcs of Sanyo 2500mah from Hidalgo before... didnt like it that much because of the 'life' of the batteries (maybe I got defective ones as well)...
Al, there's a guy from the photog forum who sells ansmann batteries and chargers (Made in Germany). His name is Pat (Hocchuan sa flickr)... he also posted sa for sale section ng PiPho :)
john_villavicencio 05-23-2006, 09:45 AM I use energizer as well, 2500mah and they work great. i'm using a slow charger for shoots that are scheduled and a quick charger for those spur of the moment shoots.
Randy_Rivera 05-23-2006, 09:33 PM I saw one at Festival Supermall, forgot the store name, 4pcs GP 2500mah included plus autovolt 15 min charger, whoa!!! that's the fastest charger i've seen ever. but don't know how long your battery will last after a couple of charges, haven't bought it yet. anybody tried this?
but i've been using sanyo's ever since, no problems so far, just make sure you buy it from known shops just to avoid fake or defective ones
dodie_legaspi 05-24-2006, 08:29 AM Guys you should try the ansmann batteries made in germany and its charger. they have 2600mah and lasts very long. To quote a photographer from another forum , he used to consume 3-4 sets a day now he uses just 1-2. The charger is a must , cuz it will discahrge, trickle charge independently per battery capacity.
Al Mendoza 06-01-2006, 10:48 AM .
The Ansmann and Energizer batteries are probably worth it, reliable and long lasting.
Thanks guys.
tip: Be careful in handling these NimH batteries, dropping it can easily damage and shorten its useability.

rosalie_gomez 06-01-2006, 10:38 PM Only brand I've used is Energizer 2500mAh batteries. I have 2 chargers: Maha MH-C801D (which makes it easier to charge the 5 batteries for the SB800) and an Energizer Ultra Compact Charger. The Maha charger is great, has 8 independent charging circuits and can choose between soft charge (which takes about 2 hours) and normal charge (which takes 1 hour). :)

@ Rosalie
Is this the charger you're talking about? I did find it online at Thomas Distributing, did you source yours locally?
TIA (Thanks In Advance)

JonDexterTan 06-02-2006, 06:42 AM you can also try www.eastgear.com's selection, they're cheaper and will get the item to you in 2 days through FedEx :D

Good lead, got it bookmarked. You got me thinking about the new Vosonic 8360 and of course the Maha charger, hmmm!
Thank you.

rosalie_gomez 06-02-2006, 04:20 PM @Al
Yes, that's the one I use. I got mine from Thomas Distributing. A local distributor brought it in already but unfortunately, I cannot remember who. :(
rosalie_gomez 06-24-2006, 09:07 AM The local distributor of Maha chargers is YKL Development & Trading Corporation (Tel # 743-6601). I got an e-mail that someone was able to purchase the MH-C801D for a little less than Php4.5k :)
john_javellana 07-25-2006, 04:07 PM i agree with those who suggested ansmann batteries. they're very efficient and they haven't let me down yet. usually a 1 set (of four) can last you the whole wedding well of course it depends on the user as well!). compared the prices of the energizers? i'd happily go for ansmanns.. :)

I guess depends on where you buy because the Energizer batteries I bought are cheaper than Ansmann. :)
Eddie Tan 07-31-2006, 04:15 PM My problem with Sanyo batteries is after charge for 4-6 hours not not used after 24 hours, the battery is discharged. I don't know why but a friend of mine has the problem.
John Edward Taca 07-31-2006, 05:08 PM Been using sanyo. they just really discharge fast and drains almost as fast when not in use!
Also have GP's for more than 2 years and theyre still going strong! I heard that ansman is also very good!
Vince_Villamin 07-31-2006, 05:14 PM where can i buy cheap energizer rechargable batts?
carlos ramirez 07-31-2006, 09:13 PM are the ansmann batteries and chargers available locally? anyone know what shop we can get some? i have some gp batteries and they have proven to be reliable, i just want to try other brands to see how they compare. so if anyone has a lead which shop carries the ansmann please post here, thanks in advance!
carlitofso 07-31-2006, 10:38 PM hi guys,
i agree the sanyo rechargeable batteries has defects, im now using the sony, energizer and an mann batteries, dependable and long lasting when fully charged.
John Edward Taca 07-31-2006, 11:58 PM got this from the dist: acel photo, 24k fotohaus and aperture trading
Roro Fernandez 08-01-2006, 06:57 AM having same problems with sanyo 2500mh batteries, they drain fast even when not in use then it stopped working. I threw them away and settled with Energizers. but i wanna try ansmanns also for i heard they have good quality batteries.
joe_galian 08-01-2006, 09:20 AM I charge my new 2700 Sanyo batteries with the Sanyo 15min charger. Reviews says that it shortens batteries to 500 cycles -down from 1K. I did a birthday party and never replaced my 1st set. On weddings I use just 2 sets! I always charge my batts the night before any event to cover.
I read that Sanyo's website posted a defective batch of 2500 w/ serial numbers. I gave my defective batch to my relatives!
I heard that a lot of Canon flash units (of wedding photogs) were damages by batteries higher that 2100-FYI. So far my Nikon SB is still ok.
Hey, the 2900s are out na daw!
Sau_Potonia 08-01-2006, 10:36 AM I'm using GP since my Tamiya day until now they are usable. I also use Energizer and GP charger that charges 2500mA for an hour and has 4 independent bays that has trickle charging function.
Checkout Handyman for Energizer batteries and chargers.
Sau
Marton_Benitez 08-02-2006, 08:31 PM I just got my sb flash today, and bought Energizer batts with the charger at mayer. I also got ansmann batteries. Just wondering can i charge them on my energizer charger?
TIA :)
raymund_madronero 08-24-2006, 10:04 PM Is it ok if you someone can post the average price of Ansmann rechargeables? Saw someone at ebay.ph selling for 120 a piece... just wondering if it would be a lot cheaper to go to Hidalgo to buy...
TIA
bryanyap 08-24-2006, 11:33 PM i'm really intrigued with that ansmann brand of batts... it seems lots of photogs are highly recommending it... maybe i'll buy myself a set of ansmann as soon as my energizers die on me... i know no batts last forever but still i'm hoping my energizers would at least show me signs of paghihingalo man lang after all the shoots they've been through
kaihuang 09-01-2006, 03:07 AM been using GP brand for the past few years.. got their quick charger as well. 1hr ata yun with individual charging capacity.
my batteries are only 1800s and they used to last the whole wedding on my fuji S2. now they are just powering my pocketwizards..
raymund_madronero 09-01-2006, 09:08 PM Is there a local distributor of Maha chargers? Just got myself a bunch of Ansmann 2600s and it takes forever to charge using my old charger... I wanted to get the Ansmann Energy 16 sana kaso medyo mahal... is Maha cheaper? TIA

lestercallanta 09-04-2006, 01:09 AM So Wena_b, what's your real name?
raymund_madronero 09-04-2006, 03:00 PM Thank you for the information Wena...
Brent_Co 09-07-2006, 01:10 AM I'm currently using crappy Sanyo's. Will give those Ansmann's a try along with the charger. Mukhang pati charger ng Sanyo bulok din eh.
I like that 6 battery capacity of Ansmann, Sakto para sa SB800.
Rowena_Clemente 09-09-2006, 12:15 AM I saw the powerex Maha charger at YKL Photo center at Sm mall of asia, and accdg. to one pro fotog, George Tapan, its a good charger. The exact model is Powerex MH-801D @ P4,455.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g102/cacsounds/powerexmahamh-801d.jpg
Maha has once again created a high-quality product for professionals and those who need a large-capacity charger. Several charging options are available: Rapid Charge, Soft Charge, and Condition. The heavy duty international AC power adapter requires no transformer because Maha has made an adapter which can accept foreign electronic currents and voltages.
Maha's own microprocessor can detect voltage differences within 0.001V. This assures your new batteries and really old batteries, will each receive the amount of charge they need. All of this happens independently in each charging cell.
U can check the review at this site.

Amiel_Mercado 09-09-2006, 12:59 AM How many of you charge rechargable batteries on a different charger?
by the way, I thought of putting this question on this thread since it seems to be the right place to ask. But if its not, mods just move it. :)
Earl Gonzalez 09-09-2006, 09:44 AM I'm using Sony batteries and chargers... The 2300 ones... Never experienced any problem with them. :)
Rowena_Clemente 09-10-2006, 12:48 AM Just bought the Maha charger Powerex MH-C801D(made in Taiwan) in SM mall of Asia, (beside 5th Avenue) 2/F North wing side i think. It was the last two stocks that day, a fotog from FPPF bought the other one.
So far, im happy with the charger i got. The other option i have is the Ansmann Energy 8 professional but i opted for the Maha since it has refresh, individual indicator and microprocessor just like the ansmann energy pro 8. The Maha charger costs P4500 while the ansmann is P5600. I think I got a good deal.
I use all types of rechargeable batteries like Energizer 2500 and Ansmann 2600. You can see the charging status of each battery. What i like about the Maha charger is it has Built-in Deep battery conditioning system. It restores batteries to their optimal performance level and reduces memory effect. It has selectable Soft (for highest battery life) & Rapid Charge (1 hour) modes. So far im happy with it. :)
Amiel_Mercado 09-10-2006, 09:33 AM Wena, do you use the maha charger to charge all types of rechargesbles?
jun_staana 09-10-2006, 11:04 AM as for me, what I have is the Sony Ultra 15 Ni-MH Battery Charger that comes with 4 Sony AA 2500 mAH (SRP P3,200), it really charges all 4 in 15 minutes flat (strange, but additional 10 minutes if batteries are lower than 2500 mAH), for my SB600, was able to get more than 400 fires, for my Kodak 2500 mAH, it was only just over 300 fires ...
drawbacks of the cahrger are that it only charges (it still does not drain the batteries first prior to charging which is recommended by all manufacturers) ; limited to 220v (not yet auto-volt) ; at the end of the cord is a big head which you plug to the socket, so much so it tilts or would like to fall off from the socket ; it is heavy to bring along (because of the head) ...
likewise, in the office, we use Sanyo 2100 mAH, they don't last long even if newly charged (considering we have been using them only over a year; duty cycle was suppose to be 1000 x); on the other hand, the GP 1800 mAH which are older are still running great ...
just the same, if i go by the posts here, i am intrigued by the capabilities of Ansmann and would like to try it out ...
mark_seno 09-10-2006, 11:50 PM My Uniross GlobeTrotter Pocket charger can fill up four 2300maH batteries in 3 hours. I get about 240-300 shots (without flash and LCD) from my point-and-shoot A610. I got the set for P1,500 from Ace in Festival Mall. I've tried high capacity batteries from Sanyo and Sony, and I think Uniross can compete with those brands.
Rowena_Clemente 09-11-2006, 12:52 AM By the way, the Powerex maha charger is also available at Fuji Film at the Digital Center of Glorietta , Makati near Globe Telecom and Gold's Gym.
enjoy_gaw 09-11-2006, 07:54 AM I'm pleaseantly surprised with the performance of my uniross batteries. They are performing well over the course of numerous recharges. Unlike the sanyos and GP's which start out well but loses charge quickly and over time doesn't seem to carry as much charge.
Do any of you condition your rechargeable batteries? Do they help?
Some suppliers told me that it's just a marketing gimmick.
Personally, i think draining NiMh batteries is ncecessary, unlike the li-ions which you're not suppose to discharge comletely. That's why some chargers have them and why the Canon 1 series cameras have a refresh function. i normally use a flashlight or a small motor to drain the batteries and recharge them. my impression is refreshing helps!
raymund_madronero 09-25-2006, 02:19 PM Finally got myself a Maha 801D charger... was having second thoughts because of the price. However, when I passed by YKL Color in Sto. Domingo this morning, I know I had to get one...
It's conditioning my old Sanyo 2100 batteries now...
Gil Penaflorida 09-25-2006, 06:39 PM No need to refresh NiMH. It can even be disastrous for the NiMH if you totally drain it. Also super fast chargers shorten the charge life cycle of the batts drastically.
Gil Penaflorida 09-25-2006, 06:40 PM You may need to drain your NiMH in the 1st few uses by normal usage but not totally drained as what the refresh mode does.
raymund_madronero 09-26-2006, 06:23 PM I am using just the soft charging mode... come to think of it... soft-charging pa ang 2 hours of charging...
just a thought... i was at DIY (Do It Yourself) Shop this morning... I happened to pass by the section where they sell chargers and rechargeables... there was one charger there (forgot the brand) which says in the instruction that its fast charging is at 16 hours and soft-charging at 32 hours for a 2000 mAh rated battery... whew!!!
I was smiling as I remember how the studio of a friend of mine in the province where almost all their electrical outlets have a charger plugged in.
Brent_Co 09-26-2006, 11:53 PM I am using just the soft charging mode... come to think of it... soft-charging pa ang 2 hours of charging...

That's one really slow charger bordering retarded. :D
Reading this thread now makes me want to hit myself though because I should've bought the MAHA charger from YKL instead of the Energy 8 Professional I just ordered. Consuelo nalang siguro that it has a battery tester.
raymund_madronero 09-27-2006, 06:58 AM Is your Energy 8 Pro the one that's rack-mount?
I was tempted to get the Ansmann Energy 8 or 16... however, price is a big factor for me kaya I settled with Maha...
Brent_Co 09-27-2006, 11:54 PM It just arrived. Man is it BIG! The MAHA looks really portable. Might get that next time for bringing around.
@raymund_madronero
Are there other types of Energy 8 Professional?
raymund_madronero 09-28-2006, 06:55 AM It just arrived. Man is it BIG! The MAHA looks really portable.
I was just wondering... being rack-mount, the width should be around 19 inches... with that size, it would have been more "practical" (in terms of size) to get the Energy 16 Pro. :):):)
Brent_Co 10-03-2006, 09:42 PM I got it because of the built in battery tester. Don't charge so many batteries to require a 16.
Glenn Michael Tan 10-04-2006, 01:52 AM i also use energizer rechargeable batteries, works well with my sb800, recycle time is fast and it takes longer to discharge
dindin_lagdameo 10-04-2006, 08:26 PM I use 8pcs Sanyo and 8 pcs Energizers... all work well. My quick charger is the Sanyo and charges 4 pcs. a little over 3 hours.
JPSarmenta 10-04-2006, 08:29 PM i use ansmann batteries and chargers, i;m very happy with them espcially the charger! very good performance!
raymund_madronero 10-05-2006, 10:22 AM has anyone noticed this?
I was topping up my batteries this morning using my Maha CH-801D. The first batch I was charged without putting a fan in front of it. After the top up, the batteries were hot (which is normal - considering that even with soft charging, the charger still delivers 1000mA of current). On the second batch, I pointed the fan to the batteries to cool them off while charging but I noticed that the second batch took longer to recharge.
Of course, there could be factors like different levels of charge left in each set even if they were charged almost at the same time last week...
Anyway, just curious...
Another thing... does anyone know a local source for rechargeable CR-123A batteries and charger?

David Tong 10-16-2006, 05:45 PM I saw an ad for the new sony rechargeables with the 15min fast charger with all sorts of battery detection thingamjigs, any idea where these can be found outside mall prices?

manny.talavera 10-17-2006, 12:43 AM Maha introduces MH-C801D little sister the MH-C800S it has all the features of MH-C801D except that its rapid charging current for AA batteries is 1000 mAh that make its charging time twice longer.
I already owned an MH-C801D and very satisfied with it. :)
dr.mark.dimalanta 10-17-2006, 09:28 AM Sanyo 2500's are ok but there are a couple of defective ones circulating in the market I threw away 12 of them.
I had purchased a set of 6 2500's AA's with a rapid charger from Costco in the USA for around p1000 equivalent. they had always worked great. unfortunately, I purchased a pair of 2500's from megamall SM just to make a total of 8, and two sets of 4. Like clockwork the set in which i paired the SM bought batt's always worked eratically. often dying prematurely. Hmmm... and i did notice a color difference at the positive terminal. i must investigate this further and report back. in general, Sanyo's are highly regarded, but after reading this forum, and it doesnt surprise, there must be a very large batch of inferior fakes/poor QC versions floating around.
this forum is great! i learn something new everyday

jp_moral 10-17-2006, 03:46 PM Called one of the stores in Hidalgo and they sell 2100mAh Ansmann's for P120 each and the 2600's for P130 each. Do these prices sound right to you guys? Medyo praning na ko sa fakes because of my experience with the Sanyo's. (Thanks doc mark for the informative link.)
Patrick Evangelista 11-02-2006, 06:11 PM Instead of doing another thread, decided to continue in this post.....Have any of you guys heard of the SANYO ENELOOP, I came across this brand in a store here. From their website, they claim to have a shelflife of a disposable battery (they can hold 90% of charge in 6 months, and 75% in one year)... and it is fully charged when you buy it....
Not have heard a lot of review about it, but i guess its worth a try, it costs around AU$30 (1.2K) for 4 AA and a slow charger. Im just wondering if any of you have inputs on this...thanks....
heres the website http://www.eneloop.info/
manny.talavera 11-02-2006, 06:46 PM Thank you for the info Patrick, I wonder if it is already available here in the Philippines. :)
Update: Got the 4 AA pack from Battery Specialist here in VMall Greenhills for 800 PHP.

i've tried the HYBRIO, a similar technology by Uniross. They perform basically like a hybrid alkaline and Recharegeable. You get the best of both worlds sort of.
They can be used off the shelf like alkalines - if you prefer rechargeables but suddenly run out of batteries, you get to use the batteries immdediately and they turn into regular rechargeables afterwards.
They keep their charge much longer - So instead of a couple of days, the batterries keep a healthy charge for a longer time. They work great for back up batteries, for longer trips and emergencies. The ability to charge in advance is great. And in case you don't have time to charge up before a shoot you won't suddenly find yourself with a dry sert of batteries.
The compromise is that it's lesser power compared to the best rechargeables - only around 2100mAh, and they have less theoretical recharging cycles, 500 times as opposed to 1000 for the pure NiMH.
They're already available locally at ace hardwares, haven't seen them in photo stores yet though.

as to answr your question, i use generic brands only. they are just as good. just be sure to get the higher ratings if possible
jp_moral 11-06-2006, 11:16 PM I saw what I think are fake Sanyo's being sold in SM Hypermart in Sucat. They weren't in Sanyo packaging. Just two AA's in a cheap blister pack. Either they're fake or used/smuggled repackaged batteries. I wonder how they found their way into SM?

Francis Perez 01-22-2007, 05:48 PM for a year now ive been using energizer 2500's...
but for my last wedding the energizer, fully charged when i left the house... went dead on me.. (maybe coz its been a year... some say you should change in 6 months of heavy use)
so i decided to get the ansmann energy 8 professional and 8 pieces of 2700's
tested it last sunday at a wedding.... fully charged all 8.
got to use only one set for the whole 12 hours of shooting.. (and im a heavy flash user)
got back and tested the batteries i used.. and what do you know.. all 4 cells had 70 % remaining...if i had a wedding the next day i could still use this and let the remaining four be backup.
after almost two days without using the 4 i used and the 4 i didnt use..(bought 8 remember)
i checked the charge with the tester... and..
the four cells contained the same amount of charge as when i last checked (70% for the ones i used and 100 percent for the ones i didnt use).

nap_alcedo 01-22-2007, 06:16 PM I too can vouch for the charge-holding abilities of the Ansmanns. After my Sanyo batteries died on me at one time, I now top-up my batteries before I bring them and with the Ansmanns, even if I fully-charged it several weeks back, it only takes a few minutes to get it fully-charged again...I just don't know how long it will perform this way...Is there anybody here who has had Ansmanns for more than a year without any loss of performance? TIA
Francis Perez 01-22-2007, 09:53 PM if it holds for the 1000 cycles the batteries are rated for.. sulit na..
the energizers i bought a year ago didnt.. sad :D

One way to tell if you have the defective batch is to look at the orange strips at the top and bottom. If you have the pale orange version, those are the defective ones. I have both kinds and was able to get a good look at the batteries. :)

I wouldn't recommend this. Fast chargers have a tendency to shorten the lifespan of your battery.

jun_staana 04-24-2007, 10:13 AM I wouldn't recommend this. Fast chargers have a tendency to shorten the lifespan of your battery.
raffy,
i use a "sony" 15-minute charger which i acquired late last year. during its first few months, my 3 sets of AA batteries which i also bought then (4 pcs. per set) were properly charged. when use, the batteries perform according to expected life.
of recent, my charger stops just after 5 minutes. my batteries are then not being fully loaded. it shows with their performance (does not last long like in the past).
previously, i thought it was my batteries wearing out fast. i ruled it out since each set was of a different brand. when you mentioned "the above", it made more sense to me.
anyway, kindly enlighten us more why fast chargers tend to shorten the lifespan of batteries. also, please advise what really (or how fast) is a fast charger since i have seen units which charges between 1 to 2 hours and state such are fast chargers (do these chargers also lessen the life span of batteries?).
thanks in advance.

tina mallari 04-24-2007, 10:30 AM Infomax sells ansmann battery/charger sets too. I saw the digi-cam power set traveller (http://www.powersuppliesonline.co.uk/products/Plugtop-traveller-NiCd-and-NiMH-charger/Digicam-Traveller/default.htm)which includes 4 batteries and a charger @ P 4000.00 pero if you make them lambing and pay for it in cash ... they give discounts naman :)
willy_palacios 04-24-2007, 11:26 AM Fast Chargers tend to shorten the life of batts but since prices of these re-chargeables has gone down I don't mind BUT i wouldn't use my Eneloops on those Chargers :)
Fast Chargers tends to put more current in the batts which bombards the elements of the batts more thant they can handle & eventually die off. it's just like you drinking 8 glass of water in 2 minutes VS putting those 8 glass of water in one container then drinking it in 30seconds :D

Fast chargers shorten battery life because the principle of charging and the batteries giving you electricity is chemical. Chargers pumps electrons into the chemical compounds in the battery. The electrons change the characteristics of the chemical into a state where they can release these electrons back to you when you use it. Normally, this is around 8 hours or so.
Now, if you accellerate this, say to 15 min what happens is you force the electrons into the batteries and try to accellerate the chemical reaction in a short period of time. What happens is you generate lots of heat and since you are forcing the issue, your chemicals are relased, unknown to you and unseen by you as gasses. It means you are losing your charging capacity in the form of gas. If you charge your batteries often enough with fast chargers, in time, there won't be enough chemicals that "hold" the charge because they are already released into the air. Hence, you will start to notice that your batteries die sooner or will give you less flash per charge.
Rememeber, the normal charging time is around 8-16 hours. At this rate, the chemical reaction is normal, and the chemicals "absorb" the charge better because the chemical reaction is not forced. Very little of the chemical is lost in the air as a gas. Once charged, and if removed from the charger, even if not used, the internal resistance is high enough to cause a discharge even if the batt is not used or there is no load. Typically, a NiMh loses 10% of its charge within 24 hours. Thus, in a week, your batt can be 30% or even 40% of its top capacity even if you did not use it.
I am switching to Eneloops using my old sanyo chargers because I can charge them today and basically still have 95% of its capacity even a month or 2 in storage. No rush to charge them when I have a gig.

paoloquiazon 02-01-2008, 12:42 PM Just reviving this old thread to inform those who are still looking for Ansmann batteries and chargers that Ansmann has a spot at the glorietta activity center for the photoworld event. They're gonna be there until Feb 5.
I'm going to buy myself an Ansmann charger this weekend. Would anyone have any recommendations on what charger to buy? Or at least what charger NOT to buy?
I'm satisfied with my CDR-King batteries though, so I won't buy any more batteries aside from those that come with the charger.
al coroza 02-05-2008, 06:49 PM i bought my s5 in singapore the guy offered a rechargeable battery(GP 2300 w/ power bank) and i took it without asking how long will it recharge.. now my problem is i recharge my GP2300 till the LED turn green (w/c took 8hrs Y_Y) but y is it even when i dint put the batteries inside the camera it discharge to the point i have to recharge it again.....

joey_server 02-05-2008, 07:57 PM are the ansmann batteries and chargers available locally? anyone know what shop we can get some? i have some gp batteries and they have proven to be reliable, i just want to try other brands to see how they compare. so if anyone has a lead which shop carries the ansmann please post here, thanks in advance!
I saw a whole selection of Ansmann chargers and batteries in S&R. Also saw some in Ace Hardware SM South Mall. They're not cheap though. Personally I use the Energizer 2500s. I use the overnight (15 hrs) charger when I have the time as I have read in other forums that fast charging decreases the life of your battery. I only use the fast charger (1 hr) in case of emergency. In my experience, the energizers last quite a while. I even leave them in my bag for long periods of time without losing power. Hope this helps.

Our group of pro and amateur photographers use Powertech chargers. It fully discharges both AA and AAA batteries (up to 10 pieces) and gently charges it to its maximum. It also detects faulty batteries. It enhances and prolong your batteries to its maximum life. Cost about PHP2,600.00

Hello Al, Got mine from Photoworld 2007. It still serves me well now. I cant remember the price anymore, but if you scroll a few pages back, the complete pricelist for Ansmann is somewhere here. You can charge your batteries with the ansmann. No worries. :)
raymond_ong 04-17-2008, 11:33 PM There's no issue on using different brands of batteries with different brands of chargers as long as it charges the battery the right way. Ansmann also have charger with refreshing/discharging function, which is the Energy Series, when you put the battery in, the charger will automatically read the battery, if battery has already been weaken it will discharge it first before charging it to full, and you don't have to bother taking off the battery from the charger when its full because it will automatically switch to trickle charging when its full.
There are variety of Energy Series, only vary on their capacity of charging how many batteries at the same time.
Energy 4 (4pcs AA/AAA)
Energy 8 (6pcs AA/AAA, 2pcs 9v blocks)
Energy 8 Professional (The same with Energy 8 but with built in battery tester where you can manually test many types of batteries and you will be able to see their remaining voltage or remaining power/capacity in %)
gianbautista 11-02-2008, 12:03 PM Hey guys, I'll looking for a new battery for my D80. I know getting a Nikon battery is always better but I just want to ask how the Digital Power batteries compare to the Nikon brand? I know there's a huge difference in price. But that;s all.
TIA guys!:)
jhayrocas 03-01-2009, 06:42 PM Hello everyone, just got my SB600 a couple of weeks ago and now I'm on the lookout for good batteries for it.
The folks at Henry's told me not to use extremely powerful AA batteries because they may become too much for the SB600's main flash element and cause it to fail.
Which brand of rechargeable batteries would you recommend?
many thanks!
Paolo Aguenza 03-02-2009, 12:14 AM I use Ansmann 2700's and Sanyo Eneloops on mine. No problems whatsoever.
Arlino Aoanan 03-02-2009, 01:04 AM (4)AA Ni MH rechargeable 1.5v or any (4)AA 1.5 Alkaline battery or even local (4)AA 1.5v eveready battery will do. Do not believe that folks in Henry's ( maybe they are pushing you to buy their batteries). It's 6volts total for 4 batteries battery you will not use 7.5v or 9v right. The higher the ampere the better that will give you more juice.
elgin medina 03-04-2009, 07:20 AM i use sanyo eneloop batteries. it can keep up with my 3.9 fps. so far so good
ace.diloy 03-04-2009, 08:07 AM I am using CDRking rechargables. Inexpensive, good performance.
bryanvcpalacio 03-04-2009, 08:22 PM eneloops or ansmann will do
jeremie_tan 03-04-2009, 09:10 PM try energizer rechargeble 2700mah
Adrian Jose 03-04-2009, 09:23 PM Sanyo Eneloop, tried and tested.
noeletomalabcad 03-04-2009, 09:37 PM the green batterys: eneloop, gp recyko etc
it will definitely save you on charging times
conraddomejes 03-05-2009, 03:25 AM 2400 mA from Ansman or Enelop. I also have cdr-king. so far so good (but the reviews are not that good though) .
diegojose 03-05-2009, 03:50 AM The low-discharge ones are great. But the CDR-King's are great.
Invest in a good charger.
jhayrocas 03-08-2009, 02:36 PM (4)AA Ni MH rechargeable 1.5v or any (4)AA 1.5 Alkaline battery or even local (4)AA 1.5v eveready battery will do. Perhaps they were.
But is there any truth that high ampere batts would shorten the lifespan of external flash?
Francis Cadiente 03-08-2009, 02:53 PM Try GP Recyko Batteries
I used it to cover a wedding last January, we started around 11AM and finish at around 10PM and my flash can still burst. Btw I only use 1 set, so that's 4 batteries.
Arlino Aoanan 03-08-2009, 04:40 PM Perhaps they were.

Even if your ampere is 500000 amp for 1.5 volts it's ok. Output will always be 1.5 volt. Get it? More ampere will give you more juice and will last long....

+1 on this. The higher the current rating, the better. Recycling time is faster. Get at least 2500mA or higher. This will not affect the lifespan of your SB600 unless you always
shoot it at full power.

Thanks, I'm a bit too cautious with my external flash, it cost me an arm, so to speak.

but do remember that its not voltage that fries the circuitry, its current. remember VOLTAGE is potential difference, but CURRENT is the flow of electrons....
also V=IR (ohm's law)
and P=VI=I^2*R=V^2/R (power formula)
Arlino Aoanan 03-10-2009, 11:49 AM but do remember that its not voltage that fries the circuitry, its current. remember VOLTAGE is potential difference, but CURRENT is the flow of electrons....

Can you explain the formula in lay mans term... So everybody will know what the heck you are talking about...
jeff.victorino 03-10-2009, 05:20 PM Yes current (amperes) will fry your flash's circuitry but unless you're using an external power brick, I doubt any regular AA batteries will have that much current to fry your flash.
I guess for this topic, you have to choose between recycle time and the batteries self-discharge. I recommend the 2700mAh for recycle time and Low self discharge (Eneloops, Recyklo, Instant, E-maxx) as backups.
CornellCorales 03-10-2009, 05:46 PM basically the basic principle of electricity falls under OHM's law
voltage = current * resistance
with regards mAh ratings, these are power rating (this is similar to meralco's KWh). btw, mAh is milliampere-hours, which means a 2700 mAh, when coupled with a load that consumes 2700 milliamperes, will run out of juice in 1 hour...
HermieLim 05-17-2009, 11:00 PM I was in Watsons yesterday and they said the same thing. That they had 2 flash owners who claim their external flash was fried by 2700mah batteries. I ended up buying another set of Eneloop.
This thread is good, as it restored my confidence in the 2700mah batteries (which I also own). Thanks guys for sharing your experiences.
RanieDib 09-12-2010, 09:41 PM I was at MOA earlier and I saw Ansman batteries and charger and they were quite pricey. Are these as good or better than Eneloops? Personal experiences with this brand is very much appreciated. :)
ralphdabao 09-12-2010, 09:56 PM I use Ansmann for my flashes. Based from experience, they tend to drain fast but gives higher mAhs than Eneloops (2700 vs 2100). This provides me faster recycling time. I don't think Eneloops have higher mAhs.
If you store Ansmann for over a week or so, be prepared to recharge it the day before the shoot. The newer Ansmann in red orange package had longer shelf life. I can't comment on these yet.
anthony.co 09-12-2010, 10:23 PM I don't have any experience with Sanyo batteries, but I bought ansmann on the recommendation of a friend. I got the energy 8 charger as well. Its pricey, costs an arm and a leg, but I got mileage out of the batteries based on experience. I have these installed in my battery grip and on my flash. recycle time is fast, more than what I expected, lasts pretty long too, but underpeforms against the energizer or duracell alkalines.
As far as charger is concerned, I like its electronic intelligence in sensing the battery before doing anything to it. Low point is when you have all 6 AAs in for charging, one port will not charge. Don't know if other users have experienced it, but it will charge after removing the rest of the batteries.
HTH.
anthony.co 09-12-2010, 10:25 PM I use ansmann 2850mAh
Alex Lapuz 09-13-2010, 10:50 AM .
Any recommendation on what is a reliable, long lasting rechargeable (NIMH)battery and fast charger?
I see Sanyos everywhere also Powerbase, Sony, GP's, any feedback on these brands?
Thanks.
:)
My dad uses Eneloop... He said it performs well when you take care of it.
russel_carbonel 09-14-2010, 01:48 AM i shoot weddings, i utilize 3 flashes per event, we use 24 freshly charged eneloops 2 sets each for 2 years now, no bad experiences whatsoever, it drops now and then the only set back for me is that it easily overheats my sb900... that is why i have 1 set spare... in my opinion, ansmann is way too expensive to consider, because if you shoot events you cannot afford to rely on just 1 set of batteries to finish the event even though if it is the best battery available, it means that you need to invest atleast 2 sets for every flash...that will coast a fortune for just the battery... might as well spend that on gears, other than the battery..... btw, i saw ansmann set 1 charger and 2 batteries (this are specially made for photography equipments) at s&r alabang that cost not less that 3500... if you think its worth it.. go grab it.....
rhobennbulaon 09-14-2010, 05:39 AM i've been using 8 pcs of ansmann 2700 for almost one and a half years already. no bad experience yet. 1 set of four can cover a whole wedding w/ power of 1/8 power on the speedlite. but have to charge it 24hrs.
Angelo Mendez 09-14-2010, 06:39 AM The best battery charger is Maha C9000. For AA batteries I use mostly Eneloops though I have a few Ansmann batteries as well.
raytarol 09-14-2010, 09:11 PM I use Sanyo Eneloops got it for only Php 570.00 per 4 pcs at Greenhills. I bought it last March then last month.
I used an Akari Fast LCD charger ABBC-903 from Ace Hardware I think it was Php 1,600.00 at that time with 4 2,500ah batteries.
It charges 4 batteries in 1 hour even though it is fully drain. The charger is good as the batteries don't go hot. In fact it is only a little warm so I think the fast charger will not damage my batteries.
It has a digital lcd indicator to show individual charging per battery. It is individual charging so each battery charging will stop on its own when full. There is a green light on the LCD while charging any battery. The light turns off when all batteries that you were charging goes full.
I even forget it sometimes at night plugged until I wake up in the morning and the batteries were cool unlike my former chargers that make my batteries hot with the same habit of forgetfulness.
I was happy with the charger as compared to my former chargers so I never had problems waiting for my next drained batteries to go full in the product launching events that I attended that lasted mostly from 3 to 4 hours.
pjflordeliz 09-14-2010, 09:30 PM i've been using 8 pcs of ansmann 2700 for almost one and a half years already. no bad experience yet. 1 set of four can cover a whole wedding w/ power of 1/8 power on the speedlite. but have to charge it 24hrs.
my Ansmann 2500 mAh batteries didn't even got drained when i covered my officemate's wedding last april :) i averaged about 600++ shots. really reliable i can attest..on saturday i'll know if eneloops can match Ansmann's power :)

thanks for the reply :)
ed gabucay 10-25-2010, 09:06 PM i use GP 2700 batteries ever since (tamiya days), we already tried sanyo enelope, sanyo 2000 it runs out head to head on GP 2000 on race track.
in photography i used it in my cam, almost exhausted 2-8gb of JPEG shots on one sets of GP still working on the next day.
nestorjardeleza 10-29-2010, 11:29 PM I'm using ansmann 2700, energizer 2500/2400 and energizer 15minute fast charger.
ansmann is great but tends to discharge over time. now i'll test run my eneloop 2000
melo garces 10-30-2010, 12:14 AM try elfoh, the shops only sells rechargeables - ALL kinds plus chargers depending on your budget.
