Hey guys!

I noticed from the previous topic "food anyone" that aside from the fact that you guys love to eat, well.... you shoot it first then you eat. :D Now my question to you guys is, when or what kind of lighting do you prefer on your food shots? Dramatic or the martha stewart cool lighting????

~set aside your clients/directors liking. :)

Martha Stewart has made her mark in the industry, I like that kind of style.
It depends really on what effect you want to achive whether dramatic or as you said Martha lighting. With the trend today clients in advertising are into martha's peg.
It's cool and it sets you a kind of mood that makes your food YUMMY!

have you tried placing a tracing paper over the food and lighting it from behind? this is the most basic way of achieving the cool lighting. and for the dramatic lighting, try harsh lights and use some gobos to intentionally put shadows on the shot. :)

Depends on the food, the setting, and i guess the particular inspiration for the moment. I do hope though that more clients would be open to dramatic lighting. Most clients I have encountered just want clean, bright, and even lighting. I guess they correlate that lighting with an impression of clean food.

yup i agree with sir louie, most people like clean bright, lighting for food, though there are lot of alternatives for drama but commercially they dont work well for posters, banners or backlighted menuboards..

Wanted to include a pic as a sample too but somehow the photo doesnt come out here in the thread, how do i do that? thanks..

I have to agree with most of you that most clients want clean food shots as it looks more appetizing if presented this way. Another reasson would be para madali i-dropout sa Photoshop so that the ad agency could still use the image in another layout (that is if it was shot in white or gray background). Siguro din depende sa concept ng ad agency kung gagamit yung photographer ng dramatic lighting.

I prefer the popular cool lighting. Brings out the real color of the food.

Hmm i like this thread... I used to do a lot of these. I love doing Food photography. I think most of us. Been doing mostly "martha" Lighting for food even with some homewares and furniture and fashion accessories and some other product shoots. because of a more life-stylish feel and the more natural color it renders. Most clients for the A B such as Fine dining restaurants, hotels, Home catalogues, etc. like it. For the Harsh lighting, based on the creatives we are doing, it is usually likened by our clients in the fastfood business.
