For me...The Grand Prize winning photo should have a chance to be publish as Cover of DPP Magazine...:)

Well we already took Nick Espino's photograph for Issue 07-Urban Landscapes and that was only for Readers Gallery submission.

Best would be to scream to Canon, convince them of the strength of the DPP community by having like 500 contestants, and having them donate that Mark III for a contest.

Sir Nick, Wow! Mark III as a prize!!!!! This will surely a hit!

@Nick

Another thread on contests/challenges here... there's a demand. :-)

Yes yes Din2. There is a demand. Can't have a contest without a little incentive other than just bragging rights. Its the incentive part(s) that we are finalizing. Almost one hundred percent there.

do contestants keep rights to the photos?

do contestants keep rights to the photos?

They most certainly should. Contest organizers should define what publishing rights they are asking from the winners. Non-winners should not be asked any publishing rights, as they are not receiving anything.

Copyrights should be retained by the contestants, winners or not.

Of course, if the contest organizers want also copyrights, then the prize that they should offer must make it WORTHWHILE for the contestant to give up copyrights.

Contestants should not give up their copyrights for a small sum of money, or for a trophy or certificate because winning photographs can be worth a lot more if sold in the open market.

Working on some things Derick--like what incentives can be given for photo contests. Some have already committed and just need a bit more to fill up the year.

is this thread about mechanics we want or prizes we wish?

I don't think prizes are necessary. Being given recognition on a special section for contest winners here in DPP would be good enough.

I hope contests are done weekly or bi-monthly to keep our photography juices flowing. A month is just too long.

Zandy makes the best point but Derick is reading me correctly. Trust me this is coming but its nice when you can win something more than just recognition.

We're going to do this probably starting next month. It was supposed to be a DPP Photographer of the Year 2007 contest but getting the sponsors aligned didn't materialize even when I started pitching it in October last year. I'll start pitching it earlier this year for POTY 2008.

Derick- you forgot Columbia apparel. :)

I wish we had more on the spot contests like Canon's Shoot and Run or Ayala Westgrove's Photo contest where the playing field is equal plus I finally get to meet our fellow DPP members in person. Well, its not really the prizes but the EB with other photographers where we get to communicate and share ideas on photography and talk about other things like tsismis on the forum or the like. By this, we expand our database and our knowledge base as well.

On second thought, Derick is right. Its also the incentives!

@Zandy ,Nick, ALy - Prizes are GIVENS, these are tokens of products /services which would be nice to have as add ons. Very short term impacts. Good top of mind recall. But that's all they are. Nice to haves. But they will not get you too far. The companies I mentioned are already in your fold. YOU need more of them.

So the question is how to get MORE of their kind on board to fuel a continued activity such as contest for followers, and building up your advertising base.

May I suggest getting these contest winners real jobs! If they have honed their craft to the level which these advertisers can use them, why not act as a catalyst to open their world to the real paying photography job? And in turn, DPP turns out to host the bigggest and best stable for Philippine Photographers in the country.

Digiprint - you can get these photographers real paying jobs?
Canon and Nikon, and all other product companies - Comission incentives for selling your products? Independent no stocking agents?
SE- Reference the sites of these really good photogrpahers on your ads?
DPP - In house technical writers, photographers
Featured Professional Photogs -Apprentice?
Bella Luce - agents for assignments; let them sell their portfolios to you

Come on man, there's so much that can be done. A lot of what they do can be out sourced to these talented pool. And they will be in no obligation to get them unless they prove themselves worthy with their out put.

Isn't that happenning right now?:) We're all just hanging out here without expecting anything in return, and just because we like it here. :)

Watch your tribe increase as these activities "to stroke the ego of your members" happen.

"Canon and Nikon, and all other product companies - Comission incentives for selling your products? Independent no stocking agents?"

I agree with this one, most of the time we're being asked what PS camera to get, what lens to get.. etc. and most of the time brand loyalty sticks.

Yes! Great suggestion, Derrick!

This will be exciting indeed if ever adopted by our local industry.
