View Full Version : DPP 5th Anniversary Photo Contest for LIVE JUDGING

Nick Tuason
05-05-2011, 12:50 PM
For those of you who have yet to attend a DPP Anniversary, our last program for the day is our notorious LIVE JUDGING. Here we take five or six professionals----like Raymund Isaac, Xander Angeles, Pilar Tuason, Jo Avila, Jay Tablante----and have them judge photos live in front of an audience. We also plow the judges with alcohol and also serve up the booze to the audience to get everyone nice and happy. Even intoxicated, our judges still see straight!

Well its that time of the year to once again announce our call for entries. For DPP's 5th our topics for the Live Judging will be:

1. Travel with a Human Element- make sure that your picture tells a story

2. Beautiful Girl- use your imagination

Please note that your image should have a TITLE and please give it a good thought. Having a proper matching title is a critical element in a photo contest.

If interested in joining, please upload your photos in the Photo Gallery for this event. You will find it HERE (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/photography/showgallery.php?cat=603).

More notes:
You can submit in both categories
You can submit up to three photos in each category
We will select the top 5 from each category for the Live Judging
If we select your photo, you will receive an email from us
Deadline for submission is May 25Prizes:
Guess what, we don't have any. This is a fun but yet serious event. What you do win is bragging rights for one year! Your photo will also get published in DPP.
For the Travel Category, the Top-5 images will also be published in a future issue of our LONELY PLANET magazine.Good luck everyone! Start posting those photos and we'll see you all on Saturday, June 4.

I have been very fortunate enough to be chosen to be a finalist in the live judging before.

I didn't win, but to be chosen was a prize in itself.

Ok so some people are afraid to have their photo criticized, but it is a great venue to see where your photos are. There might be beer talk especially on the last few photos. But they will point out things you probably wouldn't have noticed.

For the newbies... i'd like to share my experience and maybe you can learn from it when submitting photos.

Leslie, I read your Multiply post and loved it. Glad to see that you weren't scarred from Live Judging and you took a positive experience from the whole thing. Yes, not everyone can stomach their photos being critiqued, however, if you have the fortitude, the experience and knowledge learned is priceless.

Ah ok. Its just that this is such an awesome event, this should be marketed bigger, maybe even eventually turned to a section on the magazine. Its a great booster for newbie interest, and education for the audience.

same rules from previous contest would certainly apply to this year's contest.

No rules? original or post processed pictures allowed?

Post processing ALLOWED.

Note that pictures will be printed quite large, maybe 16 x 24 so that participants can view the photos and the judges can get up close to the images. If the PP is not clean, judges take notice of this and reduce score. Its happened in all our LIVE JUDGING contests. What we thought looked good in the Photo Gallery could not hold up when printed.

Just a thought....may I suggest that owners of photo entries remain anonymous (perhaps, a nom de guerre be used) to avoid risks of being "influenced" by judgment :)

We have always kept the names anonymous on judging day. The judges have no idea whose photos are up on display.

Now if you are talking about keeping the names anonymous when posting on the Photo Gallery, then that would be impossible because you cannot post in DPP unless you are a member with a real name. On top of that, how would we be able to contact you if we liked your image.

Today is the final day to submit photos, but......I will keep it open until we reach 500 entries. We are at 433 as of this posting so not much spots left. Start posting your shots if you want to be part of this epic Live Judging.

Did I mention it will be a different this year? No I haven't. Well, the difference is that rather than inside Fully Booked, the Live Judging will be held in the main Activity Plaza opposite Nike Park. This place is 540 sqm large so if your image qualifies, it will get judged in front of the entire Fort Bonifacio High Street crowd!

Good luck everyone.

will drinks (read: beer) still be served during live judging? or will it be trouble with Bonifacio High Street admin?

do we have to upload the actual large picture to be printed or a smaller one to be chosen from first and submit the large one once chosen? it was my 1st time last year and aside from the booze, i enjoyed the critical judging.

High Street does not allow public consumption of alcohol and we will be doing this in the main Activity Center opposite Nike Park. Its a huge venue. But, why don't we share a beer together Ces even if we may be breaking the rules? :)

We were able to convince them to allow us to serve alcohol so long as we keep it contained in our area. So to answer the question, yes booze will be served!

Joining the photo contest was the first of my first times . So far it was really memorable. Two of my photos landed in the semi's then in the final top 5 cut, one made it .This was Reflection in Gold. - a photo i took during the photo safari of Manny Librodo and Kharunisia Jazmin in Corregidor.

When Nigel told me my photo made it to the top 5 , i told him i was happy and afraid. happy, wow, becasue it was chosen among 250 photos. Afraid, because I might be butchered in the live judging.. and yes, indeed, i was not spared. my photo got most of beating!!! From title, model , costume , models' pose, angle, to choice of photo. =)

To summarize the comments - Sir Manny Librodo , my mentor, was awesome for being objective and fair. His brother , Sir Boboy was kind enough to judge him.- the photo sir boboy said had good composition. Tom - its safer to not have titled the photo, Ms Pilar, short on the profile Raymond and I could have chosen a better photo but he was the most encouraging - keep on shooting. From Doc???? well,THAT IS HIS JOB for the nite and his opinion which i respect. ( but if the photographer / MHUA /stylis/ and model was a newbie, they will all be so humiliated /traumatized and would never want to touch his/ her tools again. which is not helpful at all - this is IMHO ha? )

For me, the beauty of a woman must not only be based on her face and face alone. it may fall on her neck, arms , legs or even just by the way she moves. Her grace and her spirit. Venus de milo had no arms and was beautiful, Mona Lisa had no eye brows and was beautful ,yun lang.

To make my story short, Reflection in Gold landed fourth best.. which is good enough for me =).

I had fun and I have learned a lot and yes i will keep on shooting and be more proactive.

Thank you Digital Photographer. More Power and Happy Anniversary!!!

To tell you the truth i have no idea that i will bagged the Portraiture Theme for Live Judging this year, after seeing the other entries its everybody's ball game, I want to congratulate all the finalists, its an honor to be included in this year Live Judging. Like Nick mentioned the judges this year are perfect for Portraiture theme because the roster of judges are all People Photographer, they supposed to know what they are saying about this theme. And I'm ready for the nasty comments. I'm excited to hear Manny rip my photograph but he declined and its noble decision! I realized maybe i pick the right entry this year and a suited title to it. Manny Librodo is correct we are all there to have some fun and to learn something to it.(Good or bad! ha ha ha) To my fellow finalists we are all winners! Winner or not we have big print to show back home. = )

These are some live judging images i shoot last night: http://joelhgarcia.weebly.com/2/post/2011/06/dpp-5th-anniversary-photo-contest-for-live-judging-portraiture-division-winner.html

Nette Ramos

Nette, being one in the top 5 of the Live Judging photo contest out of hundreds of entries means you've already won. Being chosen as first is just gravy. Congratulations to you and to all the finalists!!!

Cheers!

( but if the photographer / MHUA /stylis/ and model was a newbie, they will all be so humiliated /traumatized and would never want to touch his/ her tools again. which is not helpful at all - this is IMHO ha? )

But what turns a newbie into a seasoned professional in the industry is the tenacity to overcome such beatings, and come out stronger. This is the harsh reality of the industry. If you're aiming for something bigger, then be prepared to take even more brutal words from professionals. Nobody gets better with just their egos being stroked.

I remember Doc Marlon bashing my work years ago when I was preparing for my 2nd exhibit in 2008. I was already 6 six concepts done out of the 12 with 6 months remaining until show time. It was one shoot I did in his house when he glanced upon the stuff I was doing. He went, "Mahiya ka na naman Jay! You're a freaking professional and you're just going with such mediocre crap?!"

I scrapped whatever I had done, swallowed my ego and redid everything from nothing. Come exhibit night, he was right. It was all about outdoing yourself from the routines you have come to settle into as a professional to get into a higher level.

IMHO, if you can't take the criticisms, especially for a newbie, then you can't last in the industry for long. It's part of the natural selection process so to speak.

What you say is true, but it's so easy to use the post-modernist framework around every piece of art. And what post-modernists would usually convey is f*ck the world, this is my personal interpretation, which isn't the case most of the time especially when it comes to various mediums. Paintings, sculptures, performance art, and photography,etc... are all governed by various rules on how they are supposed to be appreciated. A cut off arm may work for Venus de Milo (a sculpture), but we usually get commented on photographs being cut on the joints... it follows that logic.

But, and here's a big BUT...such misgivings on arms, eye brows, movement, etc... could be let go depending on a good solid concept.

Unfortunately, that's what's lacking in your entry. Your shot was easily picked apart because its elements aren't stitched together properly. A well-made concept creates a make-believe (imagination) world that's believable (reality), and invites people to suspend disbelief for that moment and partake in its so-called "reality". But a single element that doesn't belong immediately throws people out of its "illusion".

You could think of all the philosophical concepts on what is beautiful, but at the end of the day, it has to translate into visual elements found in your image; those were the things the judges were pointing at. In your mind's eye, yes it is there, but an image fails to communicate if the message is just understood by the author.

What made your entry interesting against the winning one was that it was conducted under the tutelage of the same mentor, and model. It (the winning entry) was hardly criticized. Although it was another concept, it was a well-thought out one, and the elements match.

Just my two cents, nothing personal.

Hi Sir Jay,

i do appreciate your time reply and your two cents.. may i ask for more?!!=)

" ... would never want to touch his/ her tools again. which is not helpful at all - this is IMHO ha? ) then you said..[/font]
IMHO, if you can't take the criticisms, especially for a newbie, then you can't last in the industry for long. It's part of the natural selection process so to speak."

the reason i said that was with the thought of the many newbies who might want to make it a career and the impact on them and its discouraging. the masters may be there right now , but they dont last forever , they must somehow in a nice way criticize to better influence them , but come to think of it, " a good spanking from dad " gets the message across.

so your IMHO was more complete.... thanks

thank you for your additional critic on my entry, it helps us readers to choose wisely similar what ms pilar and sir raymond

For me, the beauty of a woman must not only be based on her face and face alone. it may fall on her neck, arms , legs or even just by the way she moves" . ...was my reason when i submitted that instead of a regular portrait then also what my mentor told me to choose not what is common but unique. i guess, i am still young in making a good "unique"choice and live judging and your critic means a lot.

i dont know if my words in my previous comment may have some sting, (such comment coming for very inactive passive member ). im sorry for that . like what i said, i had a beating and learned a alot. with regards to my photo, ok. yes to all its flaws. and yes to the spanking it got .. love it all the more and i am happy and thankful with DPP for even noticing it. =)

There's no nice way. What separates the pros from the newbies is our tenacity to constantly criticize ourselves for work. Hobbyists more often than not just keep on stroking each other egos without really helping each other out. Skill rises out of necessity and conflict.

Like I said, there's nothing wrong with how you think. What you think is beautiful just DIDN'T manifest in the photo. That only comes when you aware on how your imagination works and translating that into photography technique.
