Went to Mt. Makiling last Sunday to shoot birds ( ehem shoot them with a camera lang ha ).

Rear view - birds that refuse to show their faces !

No idea what this bird is ...
http://i.pbase.com/o4/66/595666/1/62899587.4c7cDY2G.IMG_8086dpp1.jpg

definitely a kingfisher ... maybe a spotted wood kingfisher.
http://i.pbase.com/o4/66/595666/1/62899586.kRsIrZ8W.IMG_8192dpp1.jpg

Saw more than a couple of the birds below but had a very difficult time making the proper camera settings because
the birds are mostly in the shade or under the canopy.

Guaiabero

Red-Crested Malkoha
http://i.pbase.com/o4/66/595666/1/62899584.DPojd8hD.IMG_5392dpp1.jpg

Was able to see a lot of birds but unfortunately majority of my captures are palpak.

Good catch, Tina... it's really tough shooting in the rainforest undercanopy. Light is very low, the birds are normally active, plus the mosquitos are always hungry....

Does the first bird look like a sunbird or flowerpecker species? It could be female Plain-throated Sunbird like the one I linked, but I can't really be sure:

The second one is indeed a Spotted Wood Kingfisher, a male. Nice shots of the Guaiabero and RC malkoha too!

Thanks a lot Romy and TJ. The first photo is definitely of the sunbird species. Are you guys going to the WBCP birding trip to Apalit, Pampanga this July 8 ?

Hi Tina,

If it's a sunbird species, then it's definitely a female. Generally. sunbird males are more colorful, too bad female birds don't have access to cosmetics...

I've seen the Jacanas at Apalit and they're numerous in that area - a fenced in property by the side of the highway. I was not able to photograph them because the fence was too high.... good for birdwatching though.

...... Romy, post a Jacana pic for everyone's vieiwing pleasure. :)

Pheasant-tailed Jacanas have very long tails during breeding, and they're among our prettier water birds.

I haven't caught a good one yet, TJ.... they're just too shy at Candaba wetlands. Here's the closest I got to one - 70 meters. I had to use a 2x TC to make it a bit bigger in the frame.

350D + Sigmonster + Canon 2x TC, 1600 mm, f/18, 1/125 sec, ISO 400, manual exposure

I've always enjoyed taking bird photographs at Mt. Makiling so when a group of people from the Philippine Bird Photography yahoo group organized a trip to a new location ( at least for me it is ) in Makiling, I enthusiastically told them I can definitely join the group. Had a hard time waking up and driving to the meeting place because I only got 2 hours of sleep ... anything for bird photography !!!! I normally bird the whole day and the group was done by 12nn so I was kinda bitin ... I went back with another friend yesterday to pacify my need to take more pictures

Here are some of the photos that I was able to take during these 2 days at Mt. Makiling :

I like the background color of the first. I think the bird on the right was about to turn around. =B) Good vantage point on the fourth image. Tina — the queen of birds. =B)

Cheers,

OT: Aren't they illegal to keep as pets (the parrots or whatever they're really called Macor/makoy hehe)?

Yes, if they are cramped up in a small cage. But if they can fly in an aviary as big as a badminton court (8 aviaries for the various species) built like their natural habitat. The Aviary is in the top of the mountain located in a 13 hectare property, away from the dirty air of the city. Believe me, they eat better food, see the best vets/doctors, better than most citizens in this country.

BTW, all of these beautiful majestic Macaw's have legal papers, they are not illegal aliens. :) Thanks for your concern.

Macaw, thanks for the clarification hehe. Never quite understood what Dora and Diego (Nickelodeon) calls them with their "accent" hehe.

Oh, I wasn't pertaining to you keeping them as pets hehe, i was just wondering coz I used to see a lot of them in pet stores/Kartimar.

Beauties in there Tina. What a girl - lack of sleep, sige pa rin :~). Half a day, bitin pa rin :~). That is dedication. Alalay lang sa health mo. Pag nagkita tayo sa birding, mapapasubo ako dahil normally 2 hrs (sa morning) on the average ako sa photo birding. My hats off to you.
more power to you for more shooting,
gil

Thank you so much Gil. HEhEHhEHeHehe birding is the cure to everything if you ask me. If only I could bird even while I'm sick, gagaling ako for sure - kaso my husband thinks otherwise and so does my doctor

The new place in Makiling has a lot of shaded areas so kayang kaya whole day birding there IF you are patient enough. I have yet to discover a lot of places there - one of these days hopefully. Thanks again Gil.

Great series Tina. Di ko alam na marami palang magagandang ibon dyan sa Makiling.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Zandy. Actually, even in our own villages (basta madaming trees) madaming iba't ibang ibon if we make an effort lang to be aware of them. When I wasn't into bird photography yet, I only saw maya birds in the garden but when I got interested in bird photography I began to see the many other different birds right in our very own backyard :)
