View Full Version : Missing the "film album"
Rosscapili 07-04-2006, 07:59 AM Yes, I missed it. Before i used to compile all my shots in a photo album separating the "contacts" to "album size" (the regular lingo that time, now we call it "thumbs" replacing "contact prints"). It is easy those times because after i shoot i just give it to the lab for processing, without looking back anymore because you're done already, no more tweaking at PS. You have the reason to stop shooting and rest when your film roll counter ended at 36 exposure. I have compiled some cherished albums of my kids while they are growing up as well as my family's travel souvenier photos. It is a very peaceful life before, i presumed.
Now with digital age its different. After you shoot tons of images (as long as you have the CF), and you dont stop there. You are craving to tweak the images at PS, how many i don't know. Then you will go to resizing and because you are tired already you don't have the time to have it printed in the lab so you will end up viewing all your photos in your i-photo, stacking all your album shots in a cd to join the other cd's in your steel cabinet hoping that someday you will see it again. What if your cd got corrupted as new tech emerges just like the betamax demise, and your cd's will now be a history with your shots gone for eternity.
I missed those times when our house guests browse our albums shot by film with simple workflow, simple life. Now a slide show replaces this simple presentation we use to call "album". And we need computers to show it. In film albums you can touch and caress the prints if you want to touch your love ones, others kiss it to show more affections...can you do the same with the digital album?
How about you? which one do you prefer, film album or digital album? :)
Pilar Tuason 07-04-2006, 08:29 AM Hi Ross!!
I totally understand what you mean. Just to add to the emotional value of shooting film, I can still remember that feeling of taking pictures with my film camera and wondering if I captured that wonderful moment...then taking the whole roll(s) to the lab and even rushing the girl since I could not contain my excitement. When finally the stack of 36 shots is ready, I practically rip the packet apart just to see the photos:D . What a feeling. Anyway, I have read recently that the Digital Era is the era of lost images. Why? Simply because of the habits that we now have. We shoot (heck. we even take our precious moments with our 1 megapix cell phones ...), we download, we view in the computer...and most of the time it ends there. Unfortunately, files do get accidentlly deleted, the computer gets corrupted, or it just gets completely obsolete (think betamax). Moral of the story, Print your images. don't just store them in your hard drive. Hmmmmm...think I am going to work on my sons images this week and have them printed (ala film style)
randy_galang 07-04-2006, 10:21 AM as for me, i'm just missing it now since because of work, I haven't shot with my F100 for a while... but I still have rolls of Velvia film and Ilford B&W film in the ref. and can not wait to shoot again using my film camera. It's still my first love. :D
Pilar, you're right, the feeling of excitement while waiting for the photos to be processed is really something! :)
ed_canuto 07-04-2006, 12:27 PM Hi Ross,I understand how you feel. I too tend not to print my digital shots anymore considering the cost, post processing, etc, they just end up in my hardisk and CD's. I realized now that I enjoy looking at photo albums specially that which my wife created which is like a scrapbook. I remember the airline tickets, airline boarding pass, brochures, tissue papers and all memorabilias you can stick in that old photo album. Its just great seeing and touching them again, which you can't do in a digital album. Those old photo albums are treasures to me and my wife as we gave a specific instruction to our house-helper to pick and save the photo albums first in case there is a fire. You can never replace those treaseured memories, that's how important they are. A lesson for us to pick up, print your digital photos, make your album, and share it to your friends.
Wam Molina 07-04-2006, 12:54 PM kaya ako, i still shoot film..hehehehehe. have them printed, but, hmmmm, i still have to put them in an album. this could probably be my next project.
Ray Leyesa 07-14-2006, 02:16 PM kaya ako, i still shoot film..hehehehehe. have them printed, but, hmmmm, i still have to put them in an album. this could probably be my next project.
pareho po tayo :) medyo magastos nga lang talaga pe-develop and then pa-print ng film
Mark_Tiangco 08-11-2006, 10:06 PM I recently went on vacation with my wife and took many photos, I selected those I wanted to show and tweaked some in CS2. I then uploaded them to my pbase satisfied with my handiwork. A month later I was talking to my father and got to talking about the trip, then it hit me, none of my family had seen the photos!
Back in the day I would have put the prints into the free sleeves that the lab would give out with every roll developed and show them to my parents, grand partents, titos, titas and anyone else who would happen to pick up the album. :(
bernard billedo 09-04-2006, 08:53 PM My slides and negatives are more organized than my stack of CDs with digital images.
Although I have shot more with digital, the sheer number of images I made is too overwhelming and just haven't got the time to process them. It's not fun any more.
Ria Vallesteros 09-04-2006, 09:21 PM I don't print much anymore but I got this : http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10103&storeId=12&langId=-1&productId=15710
from Ikea - it's a great way to display your favorites.
I also don't keep pictures I don't like on my hard drive [thanks to Leo Castillo who said - why waste space for pics you don't really like?]. Once I'm done selecting pics from a batch, I throw away everything else. Favorites are stored online for friends and relatives.
nap_alcedo 09-04-2006, 09:33 PM For those of you who are using a Mac, there is somebody connected with Goodwill Bookstore if I am not mistaken who will print your album made from your iPhoto application. You can visit this thread (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=13632&highlight=iphoto+album) for more details.
Earl Gonzalez 09-04-2006, 09:47 PM Film is a luxury for me right now... :)
manny_illana 09-18-2006, 08:15 AM Good point Ross but for me I still go through the "hassle" of doing prints for each major family activity despite having gone digital. Not all the pics get printed as I just try to sift through the best ones with another major factor being the cost of prints. The pics that need to be packaged into albums keep piling up though!
Gil Penaflorida 09-18-2006, 02:20 PM I use both and still very active with my manual cameras (all Nikon) and an F100. The satisfaction it gives me is far beyond my DSLR . you know the rhytmn and concentration is just different....."digital for business and film for the heart"

Napaka-Passionate talaga ng friend ko sa Film! :) Contagious ka Gil!
Jo Avila 09-18-2006, 03:05 PM I used to shoot a lot of film for my family shots. Those would be sent to the lab, printed and put in the family album. The digital shots I do of my family are still printed. But I normally just print them on my inkjet printer.
I do agree that part of the allure and joy of film is the allure of seeing if you got the shot after a certain amount of time has lapsed. But I still employ the shooting discipline that I learned from shooting film to digital. So that isn't such a major thing for me :D
