View Full Version : Gimp
Marco_Ingco 02-06-2007, 12:58 AM Any of you guys using this software (http://gimp.org/about/)? It's free and does a lot of things that Photoshop do. For those who cannot afford the full-blown PS software, this is a good option.

Jo Avila 02-06-2007, 01:30 AM I have a copy of it - but I still haven't gotten around to installing it.
Sherwin Andal 02-06-2007, 04:27 AM Looks awesome!!!
Thanks for the info, Marco. I know its ridiculous to ask this for Apple but is there any virus reports related to this software yet? (paranoid)
I will definitely try this... :)
Aris Guerrero 02-06-2007, 04:54 AM wow a mac version. have to check for a windows version. last time i tried this was on a linux box.
Marco_Ingco 02-06-2007, 05:10 AM There is a Mac (http://gimp.org/macintosh/) version, Unix (http://gimp.org/unix/) version, and Windows (http://gimp.org/windows/) version of this software.
Christian VS Vasquez 02-06-2007, 07:41 AM i have tried this on a linux box... difficult to use though because of the floating windows... there is a version closer to photoshop... it is gimpshoppe... i think...
eric_javier 02-06-2007, 08:54 AM Hey Marco,
Thanks for sharing the Info..
OT: Kayod marino yang OS mo ah.....Daming apps na nakaopen, Thats the good thing about Apple, very easy to do a multi task..(compare to PC)..
by the way NO OFFENSE sa PC User:)
Darell Sison 02-06-2007, 11:09 AM I have it on linux, but now that im using Capture NX, im reallly contemplating on going back to dual booting linux and windows.
Gimp is very nice, almost like photoshop for me. Except no paragraph text handling, but its fairly mature as an open source app.
jp_moral 02-06-2007, 04:53 PM I use it for a few simple tasks, but haven't really explored it. There are lots of interesting tutorials on the Web, I just don't have the time.
@Sherwin: I'm sure the GIMP is virus, spyware, and adware free as it is very well known in the Free and Open Source Software community. Just download it from a reputable site.

Rain Contreras 02-13-2007, 09:47 AM GIMP: 8-bit
Photoshop: 16-bit
There's CinePaint (32-bit) though: http://cinepaint.org/
But for the price, and for not-that-serious work, GIMP ownz.
Charo Nuguid 02-14-2007, 05:17 PM I use GIMP since I can't afford photoshop and I try (as much as possible) not to get PLA software. :)
For my RAW stuff, I use UFRaw with GIMP.
Charo Nuguid 02-14-2007, 05:26 PM I forgot to mention, CinePaint is (was) Film GIMP
CinePaint is used for motion picture frame-by-frame retouching, dirt removal, wire rig removal, render repair, background plates, and 3d model textures. It's been used on many feature films, including The Last Samurai where it was used to add flying arrows. It's also being used by pro photographers who need greater color fidelity than is available in other tools.
For amateurs and hobbyists like me, GIMP is more than enough. But if you're trying to go pro on a budget, you may want to check out CinePaint instead. :)
mitzpicardal 02-26-2007, 05:40 PM I'm using GIMP more than PS now because of Mathmap :).
john_villavicencio 02-26-2007, 05:47 PM if you're wondering what mathmap is, check this out

Peter Jaena 02-26-2007, 05:48 PM I have the portable version of GIMP on my thumbdrive. Pretty handy for emergency photo editing needs. :)

enjoy_gaw 02-27-2007, 08:08 AM wow! much has improved over the last time i used it on a linux box. might be time to check it out again. apps that can go across platforms are worth a look especially opensource ones.
jp_moral 05-21-2007, 01:56 AM Just learned to remove red-eye with GIMP. :D If anyone's interested look here (http://gimpguru.org/Tutorials/RedEye/). There's another link on that page to a simpler technique, but I think the first one works better and isn't too complicated.
