View Full Version : Welcome to the General Photography Thread
Pilar Tuason 05-06-2006, 06:57 PM Hello everyone. I am one of the moderators for this thread. :) Like the description says, this is where it all starts. I remember picking my first camera ( back in the old film days) and not knowing how in the heck to make the thing work. I thought it would be a beautiful experience.... you pick up the camera, aim and voila... perfection.... boy, was I in for a big realty check when I saw the first prints ( I actually thought my camera was damaged  ) I then realized that photography was a huge adventure into the unknown. It was not simple... and still is not simple and I dont think it will ever be. Thats the whole beauty of it. There are so many challenges and so much to learn. You never get bored. Nowadays though thanks to digital, the learning curve is much "simpler" ... You see the results right away and thanks to the metadata captured in every image, there is no need to get a tape recorder or scribble in a note pad what exposures or lenses were used for every image taken. However, there is still a lot to learn and understand. I encourage whoever drops by this thread to please post a question and we will try our best to answer your posts. Please feel free to give advice if you see a question that you can help with. Likewise if we have any questions that we may want some advice from, we will definetly post it. Please enjoy the forum:Grin:
jaime_elizaga 05-14-2006, 01:18 AM Hi Ms. Mod and everyone, it's nice to know that there is another photography forum for the pinoys!
To intoduce myself, I'm Jaime Elizaga and I have been covering weddings for the past 3 years. Way back 1985, unearthed a shiny shimery Yashica Electro GN in my Father's baul. I got hold of the user manual and a small photography book that came with the camera and read about photography. This started my affair with the camera. Film and developing was costly those days so the only time I used the camera was to take photos of our social gatherings.
The passion rekindled when I was able to get my first decent digital camera in 2000. Very shortly after, I drooled over digital SLRs but it wasn't anywhere within my reach, so I settled for a film SLR and a few years later I was able to buy my dSLR na. Yippee!!! My serious affair with digital photography started there. :)
As what Ms. Mod mentioned, there is still alot to learn and understand with photography, I hope to learn more with this forum and at the same time, share the limited knowledge that I have. :)
tj_parpan 05-14-2006, 11:25 AM Hello Mods and Members. I bought my first SLR in 1998, a Nikon F90X paired with a Tamron 28-200 lens. The purchase was spurred by a trip to a surfing competition in Baler, Aurora armed only with a P&S. To say the resulting pictures were unsatisfactory would be an understatement.
Use of the F90X eventually lessened and was most used for travelling and when I knew I could easily expend 36 shots at a time.
Digital Photography really did it for me! I bought a Nikon D70 kit when it was launched and I now also own a Nikon D200. Digital just gives me the leeway to experience and enjoy photography in all its facets. Playing with aperture, shutter spped, exposure, composition or just plain having fun. That's why I love digital!
I hope to learn more and improve my skills from this forum and maybe even share what I've picked up with this group.

Pilar Tuason 05-15-2006, 09:48 AM Welcome to the group guys! Looks like we have a group of passionate photographers here. Jaime and Dhon, dont forget to post your wedding quesitions in the wedding forum as well:)
So Jaime, do you still use your Yashica or did you return it to the baul? To be honest with you guys, I still do shoot black and white film. I think that my love affair with bnw film will be around for a while. What about the rest of you, are you completely digital? Or were you digital from day 1? And if you were digital from day 1, were you ever curious how shooting with film would be like? No way can you shoot 100 frames in 5 mins with film thats for sure:D
dodie_legaspi 05-15-2006, 10:25 AM Hello Ms Pilar and to the rest of the group. Im just an amateur compared to you guys, been shooting w a d70 for the past 2 years only. (we are one of the few brave owners of a nikon, hehehe kasi puro canon kau eh :) )
I hope to learn and shoot better from this forum.
If you have time and patience , pls do drop by and comment on my pics at www.flickr.com/photos/dodie1561 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dodie1561) or at http://dodie1561.multiply.com

john_javellana 05-15-2006, 12:24 PM hello to everybody!
i'm john javellana and i'm a newbie in the world of photography. i first held an SLR camera february this year. it was for our photography class in school and we used film for all of our projects. we were taught how to process our film, print it ourselves etc. i fell in love with b&w film photography, but people kept on telling me to try out digital because film is not practical daw and it will soon be obsolite.
so i did.
i bought my first DSLR camera in the form of a 350D. it was the first week of march when i got it. thanks to my dad, he help me buy it with a loan! (i'm still a student on allowance! hehe) i deeply fell in love with it. it has been my best companion ever since i first laid my hands on it. i have been bringing it everywhere i go. my 350D showed me how different, wonderful and fun digital photography could be.
i still miss the feeling you get inside the darkroom. i still do it once in a while, or whenever i can use the darkroom. it was so sad because i believe that i was already doing a great job with it.
but as they say, time changes everything.
i'm very happy with digital right now. =)
that's my story so far, and i'm really excited to be part of this forum. i'm looking forward to learning and sharing this wonderful passion that we all have with you guys!
lenard_po 05-15-2006, 02:44 PM Hello!
I'm Lenard Po a wannabe photographer and resident "archi-Torture" for a hospital.
Being an architect I've always been fascinated with art, not only that I've been a gadget freak-geek since birth which eventually led me to digital photography (see.. art+ technology do mix!) and like the poster above I had my camera (a Canon 350D) last March only.
Its been 2 months since i bought my cam and now am itching for an upgrade: (camera, lens, cf card - anything..) problem is i have no more money :(
Anyway, looking forward to learn from this thread, and maybe.. just maybe get some ROI
jason_deguzman 05-15-2006, 06:28 PM Hi Ms Pilar and everyone else!
I'm new to the world of DSLR Photography, although I've been shooting digital for 4 years now. Started out with an Oly P&S, getting ho-hum results. But even then, I appreciated the convenience (and savings) of shooting digital.
I felt a change in me when I got my Canon PS A80. After taking my first macro shot, I was hooked! I read up on aperture settings and shutter speeds and everything else, but I did it mainly for personal use.
After my A80 rolled over and died (Overuse? More like a factory defect actually, the Great Canon Recall), I decided to get a DSLR, but after weighing the costs, I figured I might as well recover my investment. Which brings me to where I am now.
Been on a couple of VA assignments with wedding and product photographers hoping to learn the ropes of professional photography. This forum will definitely be a great help to me and others aspiring to become better in this field we all love and enjoy.
Looking forward to learning from all of you! God bless :)

will do ma'am! i'll probably be be frequenting the wedding forum naman.
unfortunately, the yashica got lost during our moving of houses a few times.. although it was replaced with a Minolta SRT 101 which my uncle gave me and an Olympus Pen EES which I still use, but on rare occasions though, if I feel that I am missing the smell of the atlas developer and fixer.. :)
john_villavicencio 05-17-2006, 12:59 PM hi y'all
it's only been about 2 years now since i jumped into digital photography. i first started with a few P&S's from Sony and Canon and eventually jumped into the DSLR bandwagon.
haven't had the luxury of formal training but i'm learning little by little from friends i've met online and in real life. hope to learn more from the pro's on the board. :)

chuck_maceda 05-19-2006, 10:25 AM Hello guys.
Just registered on this forum.
I am Chuck Maceda, 35 years old, Globe Telecom employee (international business), a newbie photographer (only since Nov 2005), an avid runner, watch aficionado and a swell guy (my opinion only - hehehehe).
Through this forum, I hope to learn more about this new hobby of mine.
martin_cp_valeriano 05-19-2006, 10:51 AM Hello everyone :)
Martin CP Valeriano here. i've lightly been into the multimedia biz in baguio for the better part of two years now, focusing mainly on mutlimedia equipment rentals, and videography; that is, until dec 2005 where as fate would have it i HAD to learn photography. Thinking it was as simple as a point and shoot affair i got into it... now my horror stories can replicate any one else's and maybe a few more horrifying ones haha.. but it's getting to be a passion for me and i tell you i do get the itch, literally, kahit himas lang sa camera basta't makasama ko camera ko... i've seen beautiful pictures posted thus far and i'm hoping one day i'd be able to shoot photos like those.. and consistently too..
photography, not my first love, but certainly my passion :)

I'm Judell Urbina, 31 yrs old and I am into distributorship business.
Not a real serious photographer, just a hobby pero its my CURE to forget all my business problems! :) I started holding a digicam P&S wayback 1998 pero pang-family lang ang usage ko. Medyo naging seryoso lang ako last July, 2005 when I joined http://www.PinoyPhotography.org (PiPho).
Hoping to get more tips & tricks sa mga Masters natin dito!

jojosio 05-20-2006, 03:56 PM Hi everyone,
I'm Jojo Sio, a self taught photo enthusiast for several years (only took formal lessons starting last year) and a proud Nikon user. I started with p&s cameras, bought my first SLR 6 years ago and moved to digital last year.
I'm excited to learn a lot through this forum, enliven more my passion and hopefully turn pro someday.
It's also great to know that there will be a local version of the magazine, been reading it since last year.
JonDexterTan 05-20-2006, 09:34 PM Almost missed this!
Hi guys! This is Dex from Davao City. I'm in the agricultural business here in the outskirts of Davao. Just a newbie-hobbyist using the 4/3 system. It's seldom we have photography seminars/workshops/classes in Davao, if at all -- so almost everything we learn we get from the Net and experience (aka. trial and error). This site will be helpful for sure, it already is! I'm also excited to get my hands on the first issue of the magazine! Keep it up Mods! and more power! :D

Lyndon_L_Ong 05-20-2006, 11:26 PM Hello everyone!
My friends call me Lone for short!!!! I am also from Davao! Dex and I got hooked on this hobby just early this year!
Just like Dex said, we are just relying in the online world for our additional knowledge re digital photography or photography per se.
We are hoping that our Mods would be patient enough to our unending queries.... :)
till then...
estan_cabigas 05-21-2006, 05:48 PM Hi, estan here. Been doing digital photography using Canon Powershot G5 starting around end of 2003 and upgraded to 350D last year. I'm an amateur and really love travel as well as photojournalistic style photography. I have an existing personal project --> old Philippine churches as well as religious practices especially Lent.
Its just now that I've started to surf the local forums and I do hope to learn a lot from you guys.

the reason for this is because the local "old" photographers don't want to share their techniques in fear of competition. being a davaeņo myself, i've been thru what you are experiencing right now. in the beginning, i got my knowledge of photography over the net, then later on studied photography and photoshop here in manila. i've been lecturing photography and photoshop in the ateneo (being a faculty for some time)
but not to many were interested in it. the old ones thinking that they are the best, would not even care to share and would even downplay upcoming photographers.
estan_cabigas 05-22-2006, 12:41 PM nino, I guess, they're that insecure especially that the new generation are very adept at working on computers. Just imagine that for almost their whole photographic life, they've been used to analog processes and here comes digital with new workflows and concepts. For one who is not used to these, it surely is intimidating and fear of getting lost is understandable.
mikeli 05-23-2006, 06:00 PM Hi Niņo,
Who is that old photographer you are refering to? I think I know that guy.....:)

mike,
we know each other that well that you could read my mind. we both know who it is. it's just sad that such a fate awaits those who want to venture into photography in our beloved city.

ian_go 05-24-2006, 04:39 PM Hi, Ian_Go here. Been into Film SLR for over a year and just last month, got myself a 2nd hand 300D with a couple of cheapie lenses. Pero been into this thing since I was in Highschool armed w/ a Canon AE-1 (not the Program, just AE-1).
Never been satisfied w/ a P&S film cam - i've always wanted an SLR for films. Over those black-years, I geared up with over four different models of Pentax Digicams. When 3 megapix became a reality, I had a Pentax EI-200 (2megapix). Pero, never did regret my first digicam purchase (16K din yun!). I was able to capture those memories visually and could revisit them often when I feel OLD. Hehehehe...
Anyway, here and today is what that matters. I'm happy with my 300D and saving up for a better lens - something that would be my walkaround lens.
Just like everyone here in the forum, you're telling yourself right now, "Just one more lens..." right?"
Sau_Potonia 05-25-2006, 02:06 AM Lo guys i'm also a novice in terms of DSLR. I started using digital since Dec of 2001 with a P&S, it was a Kodak DX3600, until now this camera had been very useful, now my 5 year old son used this one. After a long research on forums like this, i finally decided to purchase Canon 350D it was on the 26th of August 2005. My first shot was in a wedding ceremony wherein my setting is in auto. Now i'm shooting in manual and still familiarizing myself with the different exposures because like some other guys here i have no formal training but very pond of reading photography forums. Most of the time i only lurk at forums similar to this one and thru reading i gain some knowledge but still i consider my self as a novice.

Iggy_Bilbao 06-24-2006, 04:08 AM Invest on a good lens. PERIOD! here's a tip: Only thru a GOOD lens can one have a GOOD image. No argument there.

you probably haven't invested in a good one yet seeing your photos in your avatar. good photographs doesn't begin or end with the lens. it's with the person using it. it's not the hardware, but the person that makes the good photograph.
anton montilla 06-24-2006, 01:47 PM Boy, Am I glad I found this site. Perfect timing for me! I Bumped into your first issue by accident:) Got the site address from there. I'v always been facinated with taking pics and always dreaded to be infront of the lens:Oops: I've unfortunately been on and off from pursuing the hobby. It all started when My Aunt gave me a set of a mini Pentax SLR type when I was 8-10 years old, 110 pa yung film:Grin: Since I was very young then, I took the whole set for granted and left it lying around after a few months. Since then til early 2005, was just contented with P&S cameras and maximize how far I could go with it. nothing really serious.
I'm afraid that I have been bitten by the Photography BUG to actually go to the next level! Now, I dream to have my own DSLR. Long story but it's all I think about:) I recently found a Canon AE-1 at home, and hopefully I could learn and flourish from there. Been busy with work but still find time to ask for tips and notes from friends. Still trying to absorb the basics.
At least, I found another source of guidance by browsing through this site. I'm sure I will learn a lot from all you here.
derek delapaz 08-28-2006, 03:18 AM hi pipols. noob here. sana wag kayo makulitan kung madami ako itatanong dine sa forum.
Manuel Garcia 08-29-2006, 12:48 AM Hi every one , call me Manny I may be old in physical but new in photograhy. I become interested in photography because of my job as a marine coating inspector .My work required me to make a photographic report covering from the begining up to the end of the project. The first camera my company issued me is a p&S film camera ,all the pictures are perfect as long as the ligthing condition is ok. Pero hindi na ngayon uso ito , degital na , so i have to adjust . Now I owned D-70 and FZ-20 and still learning to tame this beast . I hope sa forum na ito matutu akong makiuso he he ......
domDycaico 12-17-2006, 12:52 AM Hello, i'm Marc Dominic "dom" Dycaico. still studying college. first got hold of a camera (Kodak KB-10) when i was at 6th grade, then my first digital camera is a Fujifilm s2800z (bought last 2002), and my first SLR was a Yashica FX-D from my father's baul. My first and current D-SLR camera is Fujifilm Finepix S3Pro (bought second hand from Sir John Ong), other cameras i used are s3000 and f402 (both Fuji) and sometimes i borrow my friend's 350D (before i got my S3)
currently shooting mostly on Digital, but if i have extra money i buy me some Fujifilm x-tra 400 or 800 (saw some cheap 800s at hidalgo, so i might buy more frequently.. heheheh)
i'd still call myself hobyist.. my photography life accidentaly started during my 6th grade when my moderator in school paper club assigned me as the photojournalist to compete for other schools (for no reason)... that's the time when i bought a kb-10... i did pass through first screening against other schools in Marikina City... had fun, yes... but i was a bit busy at school during that time, up until my 3rd year highschool...
come 4th year high, my friend recruited me to take photos for our yearbook, i was using a s2800z during that time (and sometimes fuji f402), and was able to take a total of 3GBs of photos throughout the year... that's when i found out that i really like photography...
now that i'm in college, i usually cover events for my org (film making and my course org)... and for the first time ever i was able to hold a VA position last december 8 (wedding and debut)... :D and learned many things, hopefully i could grab some time again and become a VA again.. ^_^
btw: i haven't taken any formal lessons yet.. :(
arjayportugal 12-21-2006, 12:13 PM Good day sirs and ma'ams i'm Arjay Portugal, I'm new to digital photography as i will be getting perhaps a nikon d50 in the next few days. i have been a film user since I started with borrowed p&s's years ago. I copuld'nt afford a nice camera then so I settled on a a borrowed plastic semi-disposable (manual film wind/rewind) camera, and even joined a contest with a pair in my hands. It was a bad experience at first as I was looked down onto but the feeling of seeing my pictures being exhibited along with 200 out of 1000 pictures submitted. It was certainly an achievement that I have never imagined and helped me a lot whenever I get to think of stopping photography due to the cost.. I started with digital way back 7 years ago when my uncle left me his sony mavica, the kind that used floppy disks. As soon as I started to work I started to save, and later I did get to have a camera of my own, a used f90 which gave me great images and much later a used f80 which i had to let go the other day to be sold so i can get a digital SLR. I have yet to attend any workshop or seminar as i had a bad experience before, and now cannot find the time, so i usually buy magazines in avenida and sm sales, browse books in national and powerbooks and fully booked. I also browse the internet for resources and that's how I came across this site one day and immediately saved it as a favorite as i find the people accomodating and the info really helpful for noobies like me...I look forward to meeting a lot of nice people here to learn more and to share what i have...
this is a collection of my images, none of which went through post-processing as i did not have a computer that can run photoshop....
