Right Buddy, i forgot to put a texture and the edges are too straight and unrealistic.

Here's the 2nd version. Texturized with muslin canvass (scanned from real muslin canvass). Added a wooden frame. All done in PS.

Hi Dave,

I didn't write my steps so the i'm not really sure about the settings. It's a lot of trial in error. Anyway, here's the workflow as much as i can remember. All in PSCS2.

1. Apply image enhancement. Curves and Saturation.
2. Duplicate Layer.
3. Filter-Noise-duct & Scratches (2,0)
4. Duplicate Layer
5. Filter-Blur-Smart Blur (1,40,high,edge only)
6. Image-Adjustment-Invert (this will turn the edges from white to black)
7. Adjust Level (for more contrast edges)
8. Adjust layer blend to Multiply, opacity 20%
9. Flatten image
10. Make layer- Fill with white and make this the background layer
11. Make layer mask to the painted image. Select a brush, opacity bout 50% and bruch way the edges to make it rough and realistic painted edge.
12. Flatten image
13. Apply Texture. Filter-Texture-Texturizer (load scanned image to be used as texture).

I didnt use the built-in textures because i find it so unrealistic. The texture is too uniform and symetrical. I used a scanned image from a real muslin canvass.

Now for the MATTE

14. duplicate Layer
15.Increase canvass size (W=110% height 112%)
16. Fill with color you want (i used white)
17. Set layer style- Bevel & Emboss, Texture (cant remember my settings here)
18. select original layer (background layer)
19. Set layer style -Stroke, position-outside, fill-color, size-6px, set the RGB color)
20. Flatten image.

For the wooden FRAME

21. Duplicate layer
22. Fill using foreground color
23. Canvass size (w-110%, h-112%)
24. Create new layer
25. Set foreground color to RGB (154,80,24)
26. Filter-Render-Clouds
27. filter- Noise-Add Noise (7, gaussian, monochromatic)
28. Filter-Artistic-Dry Brush (10,10,2)
29. Filter-Blur-Motion Blur (-52, 3px)
30. Adjust Level
31. Filter-distort-Shear (27,0/11,13/-14,18/-59,35/0,97/35,102, wrap around, start-0, end-7)
32. Set layer style of current layer - drop shadow
33. Set layer style of background layer- Bevel & Embossed
34. Flatten image.

I hope i didnt missed anything. Well if you want it easier, use a painting software (Corel Painter) or plugin (virtual Painter) and use a plugin of the matte and frame (like Extensis or Photographic Edges).

HTH.

Hello Mitz , musta ?

I like the Twin Earth. Looks like a rennaisance painting. Thanks also for the workflow. I think I should grab this opportunity to ask questions regarding digital painting.

I found this photographer in Indonesia named , Rarindra Prakarsa and his works are more of a digital art than a photograph. While it is nice to try and play around a photo to make it look like a painting , I think I should also try to learn how Rarindra's images are achieved.

Right after looking at his work , you know that it is brushed or painted. However, the effect is subdued, so to speak, that it makes the viewer think that it is still a photo. It is more of a realism oil painting. Any thoughts about this Mitz ?

Here are some samples :

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=6149517
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=6160670

If this is running off topic , then I may need to start a new thread about it. Thanks Mitz. Great works of art. : )

Hi Ryan,
Those are photographs post processed to add some drama (artificial lighting/smoke/fog, toning, etc.). These can be achieved with PS or any image editing software. Even a photorealist painting doesn't have the details like those of your sample images.

Rarindra Prakarsa works are quite hard to duplicate as Mitz says, it is a good combination of lighting(he has to wait for the right time of the day to take his pictures) and lots of post processing.

members of dpreview who are good in post processing cannot duplicate Rarindra's pp effect.

I think the title is a bit confusing...

These images are not Digital Painting. These are just images that were manipulated in PS by adding some effects creating a "painting looking" textured image.

According to wikipedia -

Digital painting is an emerging art form in which traditional painting techniques such as watercolor, oils, impasto, etc. are applied using digital tools by means of a computer, a digitizing tablet and stylus, and software such as Photoshop and Corel PaintShop Pro...

Just my 2 cents :)

I cannot speak for the other who posted their images here. But that's what they call it (digital painting) at the Painterworld group i belong to. All my images posted here except the first one ( i think... too lazy to review all :D) was done with a Wacom tablet and Corel Painter. If it's not digital painting then i don't know what its called :D.

mitzpicardal
09-24-2008, 06:30 PM
I searched my SIGGRAPH digital library an here's what i found.

An article from James Faure Walker

To be fair, at the moment it is not clear what “digital painting”
means, or might mean in the future, or indeed whether it represents
anything more than a sub-culture that can be justifiably ignored. To
be a plausible category, it should at least be a breakaway category,
distinct from the parent. Is an inkjet print a digital painting or a print?
Does this matter? Well, it could. The logic behind “new technology
equals new art form” used to sound invincible. Yes, the art you make
with these computers will be different, significantly different. All the
fundamentals will shift about as artificial intelligence, interactivity,
virtual presence, the net, come into play. Just wait! A new breed of
artist will be at the controls, and the trad painters will disappear the
way stonemasons disappeared once sculpture decided to get modern.
Painting is yesterday. So the last thing that you would expect,or want if you had just given up your studio, would be a resurgence of
painting smartened up with a combination of clever software, brilliant
printers, cheap projectors, and fearlessly ambitious young artists. The
newcomers are open-minded. They simply circumvent the born-again
ideology of the digital purists, all that hot air about the New Art. There
is no contradiction between an “old” format and a “new” processing
device. There is nothing wrong in working with fake paint at the same
time as real paint. Life is like this now. Instead of a pack of slides, you
carry the slides in the iPod. It’s a change, but maybe not a revolution.

So i guess i should have put "quotation marks" on my title?

I am sorry if I offend some people. I don't want to sound like I'm a master or something but for me the term "digital painting" means Traditional painting on your pc. I'm an artist and I paint, traditional and digital.

Traditional painting means using oil paint/acrylic/watercolor and a brush/palette on a blank canvass.

Digital painting means using photoshop/corelpainter/etc and a tablet/stylus on a blank document. Meaning doing your artwork from scratch... but ofcourse you can use and copy an image that you like, but just for reference.

Just my 2 cents... peace!
