@mario - thanks sir! a compliment from the master is really something! actually, its a dinner, I just used bounce-light using alot of mirror which is all over the restaurant's walls. It's from Sucree` a new cafe resto (i think) in west avenue, i was invited for the opening....i think i did have a single shot of glass but i need to check them again. :)

@red - thanks! i used the light painting technique. my light source is a flashlight. since my camera (S2 IS) has limited capability, i.e., having no bulb mode, i just set its shutter speed at 15s (its slowest shutter speed) and aperture to 8 (its smallest aperture). I took the shot at a very dark room.

thats Breton at Westgate Alabang..the plate was huge, so i think thats what makes the crepe look smaller..:)

Me and Red did a little styling btw, hehe, cut the crepe in half to show a bit of the filling inside,
re arranged the table a bit to reduce clutter, their table was small btw and the high bar type with high stools..loved the country feeling..

As for the light, we waited for the afternoon sun to hit the food in a romantic kind of way :) and the "reflector" on the opposite side did a great job of opening up detail on the shadows..

Thanks hehe..oo nga, i didnt make the cut, kulang pa....ng "t" so hindi pa rin the best :)

Basta food, sali ako.........specially eating time!!!

why dont we make a tour of the Westgate and other south restos hehe, maybe aly, derick and the others can join.. though i prefer westgate muna, i guess for the ambiance there..conducive for creativity..:) at syempre major criteria is the quality of daylight in that place bec we wont be bringing strobes..

maybe 1 per week or every two weeks no pressure, just to chill out..then as compliments we give them one print of our work..signed by us..

The restos dont really bother perhaps a lil curious of whats going on...why these two guys just kept on shooting what they're ordered...they find us funny probably...will remind mario to text you as well...:)

One thing I learned from the shoot is that I have to make this flat image mouth watering and appetite enticing. So, I thought to make it crisp and clear for our eyes to visually translate it to our taste buds.

Here's my take on Mario's Club Sandwich and potato chips.

And finally, what to do with a dull order? I had to focus on the tsokolate-e and make my padesal and kesong puti as the background to make an early breakfast mood (madilimdilim pa).

For the curious, here was our shoot setup at Cafe Adriatico. We basically used available light from the glass window and two reflectors we brought along. Its a good thing the waiters were oblivious to what these 4 photographers were doing to their restaurant. hehehe....

we were chasing quality daylight thats why we were fast :D, the window light was disappearing rapidly and by the time we finished there was almost no rays of light at all..
Actually Aly was inviting pa nga to Palms but we didnt go na bec it was getting dark na..

im used to my 28-135 IS that even at 1/10sec is still good, so i tried the 70-200L, it felt light but i guess i shouldve adjusted my ISO, i was getting 1/15sec f11 at iso100 and i ignored it kala ko IS pa ako :D, at 200mm it sure turned out blurred..

Thanks! Shooting food is one of my favorite projects. All thanks to Chef Ed Quimson.

Set up is butterfly lighting (same concept as shooting in portraits) But is done diagonally to the plate. Backlight slightly stronger than the front light then reflector on the left side of the plate.
Camera used is canon 350d, lens is a 50mm f1.8.

Finally,
after a lot of experimentation i settled for a dreamy look for Cafe Adriatico..
was sifting thru dozens of out of focus pictures then it hit me, why not make it soft and out of focus :D.. Remembering food pics from my mom's old faded magazines i tried to make it work..

Processing my raw files with Canon DPP, i was getting frustrated my highlights were getting blown off..so i tried a different developer, Raw Developer 1.6.2..it has that clipping warnings on highlights, shadows and even saturation..i was able to tame that strong afternoon sun to get the effect i wanted ..the dynamic range of the Canon sensor is something, and a good thing i exposed to the right..
On photoshop i used Alien Exposure Color film set to fuji Provia 100..and lastly selective blurring..heavy PP i must say..

my shadows are kinda light when i saved to web jpg and downloaded it (it doesnt look like it on Photoshop) so im back to the digital darkroom later for more fine tuning :D

Good Idea on the soft focus, mario! The composition though of this shot you chose, for me I find a bit funny because the glass of the orange juice seems to come out of the garlic bread. I know you have a lot of other takes where the stem of the glass is more visible. Kung ala American Idol, the choice of song matters, here its the choice of angle that matters. hehehe...:Grin:

Oh man, really! The "catch light" on those cherries make very tempting! Tack-sharp! Can you share the set-up? Was it a set-up shoot in a studio? Or were you just out eating?:)

haha wink! wink! as far as i know i arrived at the venue at about 6pm na..too bad Zong was closed again, but SugarNot was great..so far i got better results than Adriatico even though it was dark na..

as usual another "guerilla" EB hehe..thanks for texting red..

I used my sigma 50mm f2.8 macro this time..not much blurred pics, though i have to thank red for letting me use his tripod..:) used iso 400 and with my short lens 1/15 sec wasnt a prob..

SugarNot had pretty even lighting, so we had strong main light from the counter, with the help of reflectors on our side we were able to do the job..

WB was crucial..the resto had a combination of incandescent and fluorescent light so it was kinda tricky had to do manual WB fine tuning on DPP..

heres mine..
used dpp 2.2 to PP my raw files, then a Kodachrome 25 film filter from alien skin..no dreamy look this time :)

This French Onion Soup was not our order but we asked the waitress to put it on our table first so that we can shoot it. By the time, the waitress served it to the rightful customer, malamig na siguro yung soup. hehehe.... Again, my trusted 70-200 f/4L was used in this shot with a monopod to compensate for its non-IS feature.

Again, this is not our order. We asked the supervisor of Sugarnot to put these Cherry Chocolates on the counter for us to shoot. Mabait naman siya for her compliance. The Circles of Confusion at the back were produced by the 50mm f/1.8 II lens I used.

Finally, my order. A Strawberry Shortcake they recommended, in food styling design courtesy of Sugarnot. I took this shot behind the counter because the lighting was better than in their customer area. So, I invaded their territory and went inside the kitchen area. Again, hats off to the personnel of Sugarnot for their very accomodating hospitality to strangers like us. We promised to give them a sample picture of our shoot.

I have to pass. Its Give-the-dog-a-bath day! It takes me the whole morning to do this weekly ritual. One and a half hour to chase him (he really hates getting wet) and 30 minutes to give him a bath. The rest of the day I'm dog tired from this chore. Weekdays lang talaga ako sa food shoot.

For those travelling via EDSA northbound, I passed by an advisory of the MMDA about 2 hrs ago, closing down the northbound lane of the CUBAO underpass tom, Mar3, and Mar4! I'm not sure about the southbound lane! (di naman siguro, otherwise...chaos!:Angry:)


So just have the food eyeball where most of u guys are near.

Sutokil... I really thought it was Shoot To Kill!!! When we were in Cebu for the Sinulog, I was so excited to suggest to place and all of them burst into laughter when I called it that!!!

SPICE FUSION!!! It's the yummiest place in Cebu!!! And, their Hainanese Chicken Rice is one of the best I've ever tasted!!! Yummehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

SuTuKil is short for Sugba Tuhog and Kilaw. Sugba for grill, Tuhog meaning food on sticks, and Kilaw, i'm not really sure what that is. basta it's a way of cooking. hehe :)

kinilaw is raw food marinated in vinegar, like kilawing tanigue, etc etc. Yum yum, my favorite, raw food. :)

Sorry Red, Mario and Nino (my food thread gang). I just couldn't take it anymore sa tagal natin mag Zong, I brought my camera along this lunch and shot my officemates'..... orders. We ate at Tsoko-nut at SM makati and here's our lunch.

theres also a branch of tsokonut here in South Supermarket in alabang :) have to try it out,,

Like what I learned from you during our food shoots, in a limited frame I try to find which is the central focus of the picture. All the rest just complements the main subject to complete the story. For the other shots, I emphasized the juiciness of the meat and the oil base of the food to induce the taste buds of the viewer thru this two dimensional medium thus a more close up view of the plate. I hope I can be as good as all of you food experts not just in the eating :Scared: but also in the expression of photography. :)
