Hi there guys!
I'm a newbie here and I'm planning to replace my current kit lens which is a Nikkor 18-105VR 3.5-5.6. I currently have a D90 body and I'm torn with these two lenses. I don't know if it's just me but I do not seem to be satisfied with the sharpness of my current lens.

I like the fact that Sigma 24-70 has a fixed aperture of 2.8 plus the sharpness that it has. But I do love the wide-angle value that my kit lens is currently giving me at 18mm and the Sigma 10-20mm offers me more than that.

I'm planning to do portraiture with good landscapes.

I would really appreciate all suggestions. Thank you in advance!

Errrr... those are two totally different lens. It's really up to you if you want an ultra-wide angle lens for landscapes or a mid-range zoom for portraits and general photography.

Thank you so much for the reply, John.

If I decide to go for 24-70 is it really better than my current lens in terms of IQ?
Thanks!

Yup... the IQ should be better than the 18-105... it's up to you if you can live with the 24mm focal length (or just swap in your old lens if you want a wider view).

your 18-105 is the best of both worlds - wide enough for landscapes but long enough for portraits. of course the trade off would be its variable aperture of f3.5-5.6.

for the price of a new 10-22mm or 24-70mm, you might wanna check tipidpc.com and get a combo of used but in good condition lenses like a tamron 17-50mm f2.8(approx15k) and nikon 70-210 f4(approx 15k) or 70-300mm f4-5.6 vr(approx 18k)

I'd say keep the 18-105mm. Get the Sigma 10-20mm 3.5 plus a Nikon 50mm 1.4D or 1.8D

Sir Emerson, Thank you for the reply! I just got back to this thread and that is exactly what I did! I got the 4-5.6 version of Sigma 10-20 though. I've come to realize that my kit lens is really indispensable. I also have the 50mm 1.8 for some time now. I am very happy satisfied with my lens combination now. :)

Just posting some of my photos taken with the Sigma 10-20mm 3.5. Can't stop posting after a number of unsuccessful tries!
