View Full Version : Celebrity Paparazzi
Aly_Reyes 02-03-2007, 11:42 PM We've seen Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan's stolen shots in the news and in National Enquirer. How difficult is the life of a celebrity paparazzi? These people are fotogs like us but they have ventured off in to a field of photojournalism that most celebrities despise (well at least in the U.S.). Are there local celebrity paparazzis? I tried emulating one but its not really that difficult to get pictures of local celebrities here. In fact, they even pose for you. I got to sample that in the opening of Photoworld.

The idea here is the thrill of the chase. To capture your supposedly unwilling subjects in their most candid moment. For paparazzis in the US, this is where they get their easy money. I wonder if local publications would also pay a premium for stolen shots.
Nick_Espino 02-03-2007, 11:57 PM Unless you can capture these celebrities in compromising positions, I don't think they'll be a market for paparazzi in the Philippines. It seems that these celebrities don't value privacy all that much compared to their foreign counterparts.
Aside from having no market for it, most (if not all) paparazzi images aren't art or even compose properly; therefore, a photographer in the Philippines with an ounce of dignity will not enter that genre. That should be left off to the starstruck fans with P&S and phone cams. :D
louie_lao 02-04-2007, 12:02 AM I agree with Nick! It's so easy to take photos of celebrities here in the Philippines. They even smile and strike a pose for you. No bodyguards to push you away.
By the way, Rhian Ramos is really beautiful! Katrina Halili as well. :) Too bad I wasn't able to go on the opening night.

Thanks for the insight, Nick! There goes my dream of chasing FHM models in their most compromising position. Back to Nature and Church Photography then.

Well, the only difficult part was pushing the other photographers and fans away.
By the way, Rhian Ramos is really beautiful! Katrina Halili as well. :) Too bad I wasn't able to go on the opening night.
I didn't even know they were celebrities at the start. I just kept shooting because of their radiant persona. They're photogenic even.

From "models in compromising positions" to "church" photography...... something seriously weird about that.

Started a thread like this a few months ago...got the same response. All U guys are correct. Paparazzis will not strive here. Louie is right. U can never catch them in a very compromising situations..they will even pose for U...very corny...no thrills at all. In fact some celebrities mite even ask U to take pix of them as If they dont know (sniper shots)..and then ask U to publish it ( they mite even pay U for it)para may media mileage...he...he...he. Pero hinde na paparazzis ang tawag doon...PR manager na at yun???. I was thinking ..can we do paparazzis on political persons? Maybe they will like it too..lalo na ngayon election time. Ay..yay..yay... star celebrities and politicians are all the same. Cge good nite n sa inyo ( sorry for the long comments...just cannot sleep tonite..dont know why):(

For argument's sake, taking pictures of public figures whether in politics or in entertainment, is this not all part of photojournalism?
Hope you had a good night's sleep, diego!

Only if the image tells a meaningful story. I think that's what separates photojourn and plain stalking. :)

Yup, I agree with that. The challenge of photojournalism or the art of photography for that matter is creating an image that would convey a message. Thanks, Nick!

Darryl Ong 02-04-2007, 09:46 AM i heard that some celebrities were a little pissed off when photographers ( and camera men from different showbiz talk shows ) tried shooting at them in boracay last holy week. apparently there are a lot of celebrities there during holy week, you should go there sir aly to have your "compromising position" shots:) btw TFS the pics

Oh my, yet again another situation where I'm always present hehehe. Yup holy week in Boracay used to be a safe haven for celebs to show off their wild sides. Unfortunately paparazzi's invaded the scenes and took the fun out! They should be more like me, non invasive lang dapat, hehe. Anyway see you guys in Boracay this holy week again!!! :D
Vic Rosales 02-04-2007, 02:07 PM Looks like situations like these causes everyone to bring out their "L" lenses. Even if they shoot Nikon.
The Libog lense. haha
Derick_Gamboa 02-04-2007, 03:13 PM Aly, I can't believe you started this thread. Bakya ka talaga! Man, just like your badminton pictures with Philippine team players & Celebrity players!!!! HUWAW!!!
jose_deluna 02-04-2007, 03:55 PM I wouldn't even consider paparazzi shooting as true photography. Photography, as an art, requires wisdom, discipline, and ethics. Whenever we photograph a subject, whether animate or inanimate, we create some form of binding contract between us (the photographer) and the subject... as if we are always asking permission from the subject to allow us to capture his/her image. The contract doesn't necessarily mean a written/signed contract... it can take the form of a nod or a wink of the eye to signify approval.
I am not familiar on the rules and ethical practices in photo journalism and street photography. For example, is it ethical to photograph a beggar sleeping on the pavement without his/her knowledge? Then, afterwards, the same photograph wins a lucrative photo competition awarding thousands of $$$ to the would-be photographer. It would have been better if said photographer donated the winning-$$$ to the beggar, or perhaps started a foundation that would benefit the plight of our less fortunate brothers/sisters.
With regards to the "holy week" affair of celebrities in Boracay, I believe that's total invasion of their privacy if photographers flocked and started taking photos of them while enjoying moments with their families. I believe most of the hotels/resorts in Boracay are now looking into this matter to be able to protect their clients. Not unless the celebrity really wanted to be photographed.
I believe we'll have to establish some form of delineation between true photography and snapshooting/paparazzi shooting.
PS.
How about investigative shooting? For example, there are photographers working for investigation agencies being hired to photograph cheating husbands/wives. Is this photography?

Ka Pepe...That was nery nice...very valid and poetic ( Why did U not post that comment when I started a similar thread like this B4!!!) That is why I think photography is a " discipline". Its is both an "art and a science"... Good luck:)

I had a different experience when I was in Boracay last year. There were a lot of celebrities and photographers there but the celebrities were accomodating and the photographers were respectful of their subjects. It was the fans with their cellphone cameras that were too much.
Thanks, Darryl.

Yup, Peter, that's the right approach, non-invasive. I was about to post a picture of me and some celebrities I met in Boracay but Derick preempted a comment na bakya daw ako. Inggit lang siya!
Peter, parang buhay binata ka pa rin. All the right places at the right time. :)

Derick, my intention of creating this thread was really to eek out valuable insights from our forum members on what photography should be. And I agree that at least from our forum readers that we should maintain this thing that we are passionate about to continue to flourish as an art and a medium for telling a story. Following the yin-yang philosophy, we should be conscious about the negative side to appreciate the positive.
With regards my pictures with celebrities, inggit ka lang talaga. hahaha.....:D

I think I have to stop now. Baka magalit na sa akin si Derick.
Don't worry, my wife knows about this. In fact, sometimes she's the one who takes the picture.
jose_deluna 02-04-2007, 08:35 PM Aly... you could have started a separate thread... i'm sure it will be very interesting... "a pose with celebrities"
Aly_Reyes 02-05-2007, 05:50 AM Aly... you could have started a separate thread... i'm sure it will be very interesting... "a pose with celebrities"
Thanks but no thanks, ka pepe. As Derick said, lalabas kabaduyan ko. But I do have tons of these souvenir pics with celebrities. I always tell my children, don't be afraid to approach these celebrities because they are people too and if you talk to them nicely they normally agree to pose with you.
I would rather let someone start the thread and I will just be a major contributor. hehehe...:)
Derick_Gamboa 02-05-2007, 07:02 AM Pepe, believe me he does!!! And do not encourage him to start such thread. Believe me DPP will have to sanction and shut down a celebrity pose thread beacuse of sheer volume.............ANG DAMI NYAN!!! :)
