View Full Version : What camera & housing would you recommend?
jaydiego 07-02-2006, 01:45 PM Hi guys, new to site here.
I was previously shooting with an Oly C4040Z with Ikelite housing and DS50 strobe but on my last dive, the housing flooded. ugh.
In any case, I'm looking at getting a new camera and housing as it is 3+ years old.
Suggestions would be most appreciated.

Gutsy Tuason 07-04-2006, 11:41 AM Hi Jay,
Get a DSLR na. A nikon D70 or D100 would be good. Put it in either a Nexus or Aquatica housing. you might want to get another D50 strobe while you are at it.
jaydiego 07-04-2006, 11:17 PM Caloy thanks for the lead, it's great to read so many opinions on the cameras available.
Gutsy, I'm tempted to but even with my Oly C4040, I was always frustrated by the fact that there I was, lugging around a huge camera set up, and the guys with the point and shoots would get far better results than I was getting.
The Oly was frustrating me because of the shutter lag, I couldn't get enough detail in macro shots, and positioning the strobes so that the subject was properly lit was especially frustrating.
But then again, I guess the answer to all that would be: practice, practice, practice eh?
Why the Nikon though? Would you recommend a Canon? I grew up with a Canon AE1 kasi.
jaydiego 07-04-2006, 11:28 PM I checked out the Aquatica and Nexus housing prices... wow! Over $2,600?
Pocholo Ignacio 07-04-2006, 11:32 PM Why the Nikon though? Would you recommend a Canon? I grew up with a Canon AE1 kasi.
Gutsy shoots with his camera, not with a canon....JOKE! Seriously though, Gutsy's a Nikon boy. Check out his welcome note ;-D
Gutsy Tuason 07-05-2006, 01:16 PM Jay,
Thats right, I am a Nikon boy and I am not really familiar with Canon cameras so thats why I don't recommend Canon because I don't know shit about them. With regards to your problems with your Olympus (aside from the flooding situation) you are going to have those same problems if you get another point and shoot. If you are serious about your photography get a DSLR. You can practice all you want, but with a point and shoot the quality of your shots will be limited. I aint saying equipment is everything, but its a start.

Try Divers Point at Wilson St. cor. Abad Santos, Greenhills, San Juan (7253631)or diverspoint2004@yahoo.com . They have housings for canon and olympus pns and Canon/Nikon Dslrs. I bought my inon D2o00w and arms/trays from the said shop.
Look for Ellen Chua .

Hi Caloy.
You mentioned Diver's Point? Is that the one by Frank Tsai? Anyway how's the D2000w? I just got mine from Torben with an ND70 and I'm dying to bring it down! My wife won't let me if she's not diving kasi she gets inggit. Pretty cute reason ... but heck I need my Nitrox! Are all the photos you posted taken with the inon? Nice shots! ... except the one with Mike's head being licked! Eeeew! Hahaha! Made for a great picture though :D.

Hi Jay.
If you're still looking for housings, you may get in touch with Torben Bohn through torbenbohn@web.de He's the local dealer for Subal housings here. I think he's a partner of Frank Tsai who deals Inon strobes. Or you may contact Woody Mayhew for the Nexus line. Just go to their website www.nexusamerica.com (http://www.nexusamerica.com)
He normally stays at Club Ocellaris with Boy Venus and he's usually in the Philippines twice a year. If I'm not mistaken he'll be back sometime next month or September. I'm not sure if there are other dealers here but you can also get in touch with Guenter Taus. I just need to dig up his phone number.
... Oh yeah, thanks for dropping by the site.

Hahaha glad you enjoyed the pix...topside pix were taken with my d70s/on board flash. D2000w is a great strobe, with a little learning curve to boot. I basically shoot full manual uw and put the A & B controllers of the inon to Manual modes too. Easy to power down or up flash intensity (13 steps). The STTL function is a nice feature of the strobe too. The auto feature is idiot proof. Don't forget, if you're near your subject get nearer:Grin: Go dive in Basura, Anilao, it doesn't dissapoint.
Off-topic - Mike Veitch is coming over this August to conduct a 6 day UW photo workshop. My wife and I will take the course:Grin: . Check his images www.bigblueimages.com (http://www.bigblueimages.com)
