View Full Version : DPP Ten Commandments
Nick Tuason 01-31-2007, 07:28 PM Seeing how situations can sometimes get out of hand here in DPP, I am posting here in summary ten rules that we expect our DPP members to strictly follow. This is a summary of our original rules.
I) This is an international discussion forum about digital photography, photos, printing, color management, techniques, gear, and art.
Please keep personal discussions elsewhere. Lets talk photography everyone. If its not photography related we don’t really care to hear about it. We created a shout box for all the other chitchat. Keep it there and please don’t take this into the main forum.
II) The form of communication shall be in English.
We discussed this before and so far most everyone follows. Again, we do this because we are an international forum and English is the international language.
III) Only real first and last names allowed.
Not a major concern now but forum members should assist the admin by not responding to posts made by people who don’t know how to read rules upon registration. You can also remind members to PM the admin to have their names changed.
IV) No insults or personal attacks against any members of the forum. If you are insulted, do not retaliate but instead report it to the Admin.
Need I say more? We’ve seen our share of attacks on this forum and what’s even more irritating than the personal attacks are the other members who try to add more wood to the fire.
V) No blatant advertising, spam, or solicitation is allowed unless approved by the Admin. You cannot use this site to promote and sell personal services. Posts that are not approved by us will be deleted.
This doesn’t mean that we will not post services here. Its just that you need to get approval before you do so and if we deem it a good service to the community then we will post it. Some members think putting something up for sale under their “signature” is not selling. In our eyes it is and we will delete the signature without having to inform the member. You may see though some advertising and promotions from our sponsors. We allow this since it is through their support that the magazine and this forum exist.
VI) Message content must correspond with the content guidelines outlined in each forums description.
For the sake of good order, start a new thread rather than shift the topic of an existing thread.
VII) Do not post just to increase your number of posts. If you have nothing to say then don’t post. The number of posts on this board has no direct relation to the experience of a member.
We discussed this before and I’ll bring it up again. If someone is asking for a photo critique, don’t respond “Nice shot” if you cannot say anything more about the photo. Praise should be backed up with reasons. Criticisms should be done constructively. Nothing is more irritating than having to sift through hundreds of posts that have no value. We’ve never moderated this aspect before but if it continues, we’ll start deleting irrelevant posts in threads without questions.
VIII) DPP reserves the right to modify, move, delete, backup, and present it in other form, all posts in the Forums without prior notice to the members.
Whenever we delete a post or thread we get swarmed with inquiries mainly from members who want to see a fight continue. We delete simply because we feel a post or thread is out of line. Question if you like, but we don’t need to justify our decision.
IX) No trolling or flame wars. Members attempting to bait others into a flame war will not be tolerated. Any posts containing such will be deleted and the member warned.
This has been pretty good lately but if it starts again, we’ll end it quickly by deleting posts and banning members.
X) Enjoy and Have Fun
Welcome new members. Share techniques with others. Start meaningful conversations that stimulate the mind. And lets get back to why this forum was started: conversations about photography.
jose_deluna 01-31-2007, 08:05 PM Oh my, I thought it would be something like... "Do not covet your neighbor's camera or photoraphs..."
Kidding aside, thanks you so much, Sir Nick, for the very clear guidelines. Let's hope everyone will be on equal footing. I, myself, am very much guilty of not following the rules mots of the times (particularly with the usage of the English language). My apologies, and I will try my best to avoid such practice, and would encourage everyone to do the same.
Yes, let's talk more about photography... the skils, talents, creativity, technology, profession, business, passion.
More power to DPP!
Earl Gonzalez 01-31-2007, 10:50 PM Understood Sir... Crystal... :)
Sherwin Andal 02-01-2007, 05:24 AM Hi Nick,
Had an experience related to "VII". I was about to put some criticism on one of the photos in the "Critique Gallery", but I didn't continue because I didn't notice or read much of criticizing comments on most photos - you're right, its like 'Nice shot!' for a photo that really needs to be criticized or improved.
just a thought...
jay jallorina 02-01-2007, 09:49 AM shouldnt there be something also for those posting photos....like the poster should also include exif data, shot details, the rationale for taking the picture, why it is significant, etc. etc.
that way we also increase the value and relevance of the photos uploaded in the forum. words arent the only nonsense we are seeing everyday. there must be a purpose in posting something in the forum - and that is to help other members learn something about photography.
just a suggestion guys.
Rolando Avecilla 02-01-2007, 09:55 AM I understand...
leni llapitan 02-01-2007, 09:58 AM Thank you for posting this Nick. Now if only there was a way we could stop references and comparisons to my all-time favorite "Star Wars" movie series....
Christian VS Vasquez 02-01-2007, 09:59 AM shouldnt there be something also for those posting photos....like the poster should also include exif data, shot details, the rationale for taking the picture, why it is significant, etc. etc.

I agree with this... to facilitate the critique and so that we may learn...
Maybe we can also include the post-processing done... like... layers, color adjustment, noise ninja, usm, etc... only the general things.
Darryl Ong 02-01-2007, 10:09 AM yup i agree with jay too,, knowing the exif data will increase a photographer's knowledge on how to take those shots,
ohh btw i'm guilty of "nice shot" posting here,, i see your point and i will stop doing that
nino_carandang 02-01-2007, 10:10 AM christian and jay,
i do agree with the both of you. i want to see photos will relevant information attached to them. it doesn't have to be a step by step procedure on how the photo was taken or edited, but it does help to give an overview.
leni,
as towards the reference to also my favorite all time movie, i personally think this should stop.
Tammy_David 02-01-2007, 10:16 AM Noted! I'll try my best with II and IV :D
leni llapitan 02-01-2007, 10:54 AM I think it would be a good idea to put the 10 commandments as part of the top menus because eventually, this thread will be pushed back as new ones are posted....
Nat Pagayonan 02-01-2007, 02:12 PM I think it would be a good idea to put the 10 commandments as part of the top menus because eventually, this thread will be pushed back as new ones are posted....
i agree....Nick should make this as sticky thread in every section.
Nick, thank you very much for pushing this rule....i believe this will put the DDP back to its early stage where everyone discuss about photography.
Oggie Ramos 02-01-2007, 02:29 PM i agree with leni and nat. para we're always reminded of the cardinal rules. baga ba, think before posting and hitting that button.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/oggie (http://www.flickr.com/photos/oggie)
hochi_abaya 02-01-2007, 04:01 PM leni, that's a good suggestion...even not as detailed as what nick posted but a constant reminder will be good for old and new members alike
nino_carandang 02-01-2007, 04:04 PM i made it a sticky. let me check if it can be always part of the todays posts
charina.razon 02-01-2007, 07:14 PM thnks for the info sir nick.
NinoPasamonte 02-01-2007, 07:27 PM Already created a "Guidelines" link on top, part of the header links :)
alex_paulino 02-01-2007, 07:36 PM Thanks for the info Nick, I'll be following these guidelines for the benefit and good of everybody.
Marco_Ingco 02-02-2007, 01:24 AM I will follow thee...
aly_yap 02-03-2007, 04:01 PM II) The form of communication shall be in English.
We discussed this before and so far most everyone follows. Again, we do this because we are an international forum and English is the international language.
In light of the second commandment, I think DPP should hire english tutors or english editors.
jerrytieng 02-03-2007, 04:03 PM Sad, but true. So is Pidgin allowed?
Me Canon no likey, Nikon da bomb!
aly_yap 02-03-2007, 04:27 PM it's not even pidgin. It an atrocious use of the english language.
jose_deluna 02-03-2007, 04:43 PM In photography, we value harmony in our composition techniques. I guess it's also worthwhile to mention that we should encourage each and everyone to be harmonious within the discussion forum... to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings... and to avoid topics that are devisive rather than all-unifying.
jose_deluna 02-03-2007, 04:45 PM In photography, we value harmony in our composition techniques. I guess it's also worthwhile to mention that we should encourage each and everyone to be harmonious within the discussion forum... to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings... and to avoid topics that are devisive rather than all-unifying.
Correctoon on my last phrase... I meant, to be unifying and not devisive.
Nat Pagayonan 02-03-2007, 05:54 PM In light of the second commandment, I think DPP should hire english tutors or english editors.
we don't have to be an expert in english to get our points/messages accross...what it is important is...we understand the whole point of the post/message....i think it's a filipino thing that we are always picky about how we write or speak english...and probably many of us here are laughing because someone could not get his/her english straight. here in UK...there are still many people who can't write perfect english even if it's their native language...in my case, i'm always trying to get my english writing and speaking grammatically correct...but don't expect me to speak the right english accent because i don't know anymore which accent is the correct one...i'm sure mike douhgan and steve kilcoin will understand what i'm saying here...this is not an enlglish grammar forum, we are here to discuss photography...and i don't mind people telling me that my pictures are giving a grammatically wrong messages for as long as they understand the what my pictures are saying....but it also doesn't mean that i'm against encouraging people to post with grammatically correct english....of course, a grammatically correct english is better.
Nat Pagayonan 02-03-2007, 05:58 PM we don't have to be an expert in english to get our points/messages across.
you see...my spelling is even wrong in my previous post
aly_yap 02-03-2007, 05:58 PM ...but it also doesn't mean that i'm against encouraging people to post with grammatically correct english....of course, a grammatically correct english is better.
and I guess, my whole point is stated in your last sentence
aly_yap 02-03-2007, 05:59 PM we don't have to be an expert in english to get our points/messages accross...
oh, and I guess you didn't see through the sarcasm of my message
jose_deluna 02-03-2007, 06:02 PM Points well-taken guys... get back to your shooting and let's talk about photography.
jerrytieng 02-03-2007, 06:17 PM @aly
You're right! Wait let me mix some Hakka or Cantonese words..
Don't buy camera in mall la, no gam ga.
Enough said, lest I get kicked out of the forum. :)
jerrytieng 02-03-2007, 06:23 PM Follow thy commandments we shall. :)
dindin_lagdameo 02-03-2007, 06:54 PM I was consciously observing the different threads and noticed that only a few members write in straight English.
Re: Ten Commandments
Rules are strict and straight. I actually do not disagree with any part of it... but how do you intend to moderate the threads? Will you be as strict as PM'ing people who write with "para" "na" "naman" "pa"?
As for posting non-sense or less sensible reponses, how many times can they do it before getting banned from the forums?
As for people who use threads as a chit-chat "chikka" exchanges, how do you stop them from sharing their fun experience in the recent photo EB they've had?
As for the chat section of this site, is flirting with each other allowed?
Bottomline is, the rules are good but who will the police be?
Just thinking aloud.

jerrytieng 02-03-2007, 08:02 PM Is it only me or has the admin turned off the edit feature?
Derick_Gamboa 02-03-2007, 08:44 PM Maybe just for this thread ........COMMANDMENTS eh......... :)
Nick_Espino 02-03-2007, 09:08 PM TYPO

Not only is it allowed, it is encouraged.
jerome pagunsan 02-04-2007, 02:14 PM I remember my first posting here in DPP. I have had a good discussion in English with the rest of the guys, then Tag-lish came along as a Norm. Although it was fun, the essence of a good photography discussion diminished. It was never anticipated by the Admins the flocking of new members as DPP became so popular, don't get me wrong but a positive impact to the forum. DPP is getting bigger and to be reminded every now and then will keep this forum healthy.
Kendall Cua 02-12-2007, 01:02 PM Just a thought, maybe adding a "Glossary" in the FAQ would be of help for newbie in photography.
A Glossary for terms related to photgraphy (like aperture, speed, ballhead, color abberation, vignetting and so on...) and non-photography (like IMHO/IMO, LOL...).
I've been reading the DPP forum for quite sometime, and i got lost with IMHO/IMO, which i mistakenly understood it as an expression from the Visayas region.
willy_palacios 02-12-2007, 02:27 PM hello Ken, try this page http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=1528
you might find what your looking for :)

Marty Sordilla 03-17-2007, 05:07 PM Rules are fine, but as Din2 said, who's policing ? I still see one-liner posts that seem to make the forum a chat room. I do think some just post so they get more posting credits and upgrade their ranking.
ariane bernabe 03-17-2007, 07:02 PM aye! aye! acknowledge sir! :)
aldrichlim 03-19-2007, 07:31 PM are we allowed to sell stuffs here?

Norman U. Timonera 04-04-2007, 01:58 PM Dear Nick,
Cool Site. I am a member of the Nikonians.org. Its nice to have a site that focuses on Filipino photographers.
Keep it up!

Would it be okay if the admin of this site opened a forum for buying/selling/trading photographic equipment/services? Something like the classifieds from http://home.mapalad.org/portal.php (http://www.mapalad.org).

Hi Michael,
If you do a search regarding a Marketplace here in DPP, we've decided not to put up one. We're focusing on learning from each other rather than trading equipment and services.
Hope this clarifies
Nin
Harvey_Chua 04-17-2007, 03:19 PM Where is proper to post an ad for a photographer? We are in need of one. I will give details after I receive instructions on where I should post my "ad."
Chris Palma 04-18-2007, 01:06 AM Opo Sir Nick...Understood. )buti nlang good boy ako....

We discussed this before and so far most everyone follows. Again, we do this because we are an international forum and English is the international language.
I find this the most disregarded rule here in DPP, but there are times I'm guilty of this:Grin:
George Reyes 04-21-2007, 12:58 AM Nice set of rules, Nick! And nice forum.
Winston Baltasar 05-08-2007, 08:20 PM This is my first post at DPP, Nick. Googled your website after reading your wonderful mag for several months. Great set of rules! I've seen a fair share of combative forums; criticism is good but only if it's constructive.
DondiNolasco 05-12-2007, 06:48 PM I read the Ten Commandments (Guidelines) and I agree to abide by them since all of them are reasonable.
I just find it hard to strictly follow Rule No 2 about the language being English Hope I can be forgiven for constant and repeated breach of this particular guideline.
CecileJanicek 06-11-2007, 06:01 AM new member here...need to know where to enter submissions for the #13 edition...or am I very late for this....dang...what it the topic of the next issue?
Nick Tuason 06-11-2007, 06:19 PM You're too late but even if you were on time, we wouldn't allow you to submit because your username doesn't conform to DPP rules....unless of course your first name is Pap and your last name is Elle.
CecileJanicek 06-12-2007, 03:20 AM Found the 10 commandments that govern this board....yep, buried deep in the forum....
Requesting for the name change now to CecileJanicek (instead of Papelle)
Also woud llike to suggest to copy that list of 10 Commandements and post it as a link at the home of the site. Or perhaps pop up as a link when registering for the first time. It could easily be missed - especially witht he number of posts already linked to the main 10 rules....
Jo Avila 06-12-2007, 08:35 AM The forum rules are listed in the site menu bar as Guidelines :D
Cheers!

kingcedeno 07-06-2007, 12:47 AM Where are the rules?

Are you not suppose to read a thread from the start?
How would you loose the topic of a thread then?
... unless of course, one just jumped in to a conversation without reading the first post.
*****
re-reading the posts, a question was raised about the rules on the thread which discusses the rules in the first post.
Anyway. Bygones.
David Tong 08-22-2007, 08:45 PM Are you not suppose to read a thread from the start?
Heheh, so true... But based on experience, tons of people don't, hence usually asking a question that has been answered by the first 10 posts or so...
ReD Ognita 08-22-2007, 08:54 PM I usually see questions on boards that are answered on a sticky.
But to see a question posted on a thread which is already (in fact the topic itself) answered on the first post is a first for me.
To kingcedeno:
Please don't take my words personally. We all make mistakes.

None taken dre. It's all good.
Checking ruben's stats, he made his first post on the same day he registered on the boards. Now, not that I am saying it's a wrong move but it is always good to get a feel of the community before jumping in. To lurk and observe.
ruben's last post was on the 5th. His last activity on the boards was yesterday at 7:19.
He's around. Learning.

we'll just trust you on that. like we said during the early days of the forum, do put some meat/substance in your post rather than just posting TFS, good work, nice one bro and etc. comments.

We discussed this before and so far most everyone follows. Again, we do this because we are an international forum and English is the international language.
Very nice summary indeed! Sorry for the last post! It will never happen again.

Hi sirs. Am new here, and i agree with Leni that we should have some sort of a prominently designed icon on each page that links the viewer to a page of house rules which you sirs can update periodically. It will serve as a subtle reminder that rules exist. It would help newcommers. thanks for the time... just my 2 cents worth.
:)
robruiz 12-07-2007, 12:09 PM ok! rules noted!

TITUS CRUZ 12-19-2007, 08:17 AM Hi Nick,
New to this forum and read the 5th commandment which is:
So buying/selling of pre-owned photo gears in this forum is not allowed? Please confirm.
Rgds.

nino_carandang 04-30-2008, 11:22 AM Reminding the members regarding violations that was reported to us in the past few days:
1. Private messaging is a personal tool. Do not use it to spam or mass market any product or service. Members proven guilty will have their accounts deleted.
2. The Forum will not be used to advocate the usage of pirated software. We've noticed that some members are pimping or looking where to buy bootleg copies of popular photo editing software. All discussions related to this topic will be automatically deleted.

ianfrancisco 04-30-2008, 11:39 PM So after coming to a realization that my interesting thread had just vanished and after looking long and hard where my thread had disappeared to, and after several attempts to get an answer from the moderators (which never came) I have come to conclude (with all due respect):
It would be appropriate to inform at least the thread starters when and why their thread was deleted. Some offenders come from the posters and not the thread starters. All the better if the offending poster also gets informed. This should be done so ignorant offenders become 'unignorant' of whatever guidelines they failed to follow. Like me I didn't understand what rule was broken for the thread to be deleted, yet I know the rules. Would it be so much to ask which? I'd like to do this by myself but how can I look back when all of it has already been deleted.
Also, do you have the tool to remove only the offending post and not the entire thread? There are good posters and there are bad posters. There are good threads that have bad posters. The good posts that doesn't violate any rule doesn't need to be deleted, more so if it's in a good and interesting thread.
ianfrancisco 05-02-2008, 12:54 AM Wow! Two days with nothing from the moderators. The mods are awfully quiet here...
nino_carandang 05-02-2008, 06:17 AM Wow! Two days with nothing from the moderators. The mods are awfully quiet here...
We only saw your post today. If you wanted an answer, why didn't you PM us instead? The thread was turning into an advocacy of using pirated software, hence the deletion. Ian, you did not violate any of the guidelines, it's just that your thread was morphed to trade illegal software and advocate its usage.
ianfrancisco 05-02-2008, 10:48 AM There was no reason for my post to be that private to PM and I'm in no hurry. But I noticed the silence after my post and it's labor day even.
Regarding the deleted thread. I did made a couple of messages in the 'Contact Us' link at the bottom and when I didn't get a response after 24 hours, I PM'd Lester Callanta (since he's the moderator for Software (Aperture, Capture One, RAW processing where I created the thread). I also informed him of my post here thru my reply.
Regarding the deletion, thank you for confirming that it has been deleted. I appreciate that. I am also relieved that I didn't violate any guidelines.
With all due respect, I feel I was the one punished for someone else's wrong doing. But it ok. The 'misguided' posters happily continues to post away, and probably remains ignorant of their offense. As the Chinese saying goes, 'you don't kill a mosquito with cannonball', the entire thread was put down and everybody lost the chance to see and discuss a very enlightening article about Photoshop and Lightroom and other software piracy. Pretty soon a similar topic will be posted and the thread will probably go a similar path. Will we always delete it, and assume everything's fine when we deliberately look away from the ugly facts, and live our lives amiss with the painful truth. I was content when some members were honest enough to admit the problem. Apparently I can't say the same for DPP staff still not open enough to talk about it in their forums or atleast stand their ground and face whatever comes of it in the discussion. Somewhere there I hope a similar topic is brought to DPP and I hope it gets the proper treatment from its members and its moderators. I am saddened but what happened. I say this with sincerity and brotherly concern.
Ian
Marlon Adsuara 05-03-2008, 02:31 PM Mr. Nino C., who is the moderator of General Photography > Basic Digital Photography? TIA! Just curious... :)
Marlon Adsuara 05-03-2008, 03:48 PM Just saw it here (http://digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showgroups.php) :) Thanks anyway...
David Tong 05-14-2008, 03:31 PM Read the first page for rules... Real name only, thanks.

No response from admin. I don't expect them to. I guess they'd rather not discuss these things here in this site. Silence and tact may or may not be the same thing. Silence is a statement that is open to gross misinterpretation. Bravo to those members who have voice and PM'd / emailed me and shared their honest opinion, thank you all so much! :)
otep_benavides 05-19-2008, 11:17 AM hi ian, why don't you make a new thread about it again? :) i believe the thread was removed because it has morphed into a software sharing thread discussing which i believe is not what you intended the thread to be for.
having worked with software asset management and dealing with bsa with my previous employer before is no easy task. once you're in their radar, you get the heat so i would probably understand why dpp had to delete that thread :)
joeyrufo 05-19-2008, 01:40 PM yap, i support that. start another thread :) let's have the poster banned instead if he/she posts irrelevant material
@otep, i'm curious, what's bsa :) i'm an IT professional as well, and our company is very strict as well when it comes to pirated software.
otep_benavides 05-19-2008, 01:48 PM hi joey, bsa stands for business software alliance. they're the watchdog for software abuse :)
you can check them out at www.bsa.org.
cheers! :D
jay jallorina 05-19-2008, 01:50 PM Joey, really?
BSA...Business Software Alliance....its the piracy watchdog for software vendors worldwide.
joeyrufo 05-19-2008, 03:01 PM thanks otep.
hi jay, sorry didn't get what the "really?" means :D

Marko, first in being a member here, it may be nice in starting by introducing yourself, what you do, and more importantly, reading the rules son. But even for this opening, there is a right thread where to post this topic. We need your complete name please. Go and complete it first.

thanks. took too long and i somehow couldn't login to rcf1985 anymore. decided to just make a new account and wait for the admin to delete rcf1985.
SeveN_GuerrerO 01-12-2009, 07:22 PM Read the first page. Understood. Will try to abide.
Clarification po:
nicknames are allowed right? ... like instead of using "godofredo" (which supposedly is the REAL first name), one can use "frodo", as nickname, even if only a handful really calls him "frodo"? ... but actually more people know him as "bong" ...

grahamrusselcruz 02-17-2009, 11:26 AM hi... just one question...
