Giderbert,

It's an ok lens. Not the best, but not as bad as the non-IS version. My copy was good and it is good as an outdoor lens. It is not very good at 300mm, but at 70-200, it is decent. Stop it down to f8 and it is really very good. Not L class, but it's not soft at that aperture. It's best at f8-f11. Even at f6.3-f7.1 you'd see big improvements in IQ. The AF is also slow, though I was successful at using it for soccer, baseball, softball, and track & field. You just have to know its limitations and work within it. It can be a pain though if you have an L with ring USM, but, yes, you can use it for outdoor sports. But it will be a lot of work.

Oh, that IS compensates for whatever weakness the camera has. I've even manage to shoot at 1/8sec at 300mm with it. But typically, 1/30-1/60sec, at 300mm, you can get some shots with IS assuming subject is not moving.

If you can get this used for less than P20k, iand in good condition, go for it. I sold mine 2 months ago, and the buyer was one happy camper.

Again, it's not an L, but the IS version (at least my copy) was a good one. If you want a big improvement get the newer 70-300 IS version. AF is faster, 3rd gen IS, sharper in all FLs and aperture than the old version because of the UD glass in it. It's more expensive here in RP, but if you get it in the USA, it's below P30k. I'd get that if I want to have a copy of this lens again.

i own this copy of the new version (released late 2005). though i cannot compare it directly to the older ver. (i didn't own that), i would say that the AF is fast enough for me. IS does wonders of course, and has very good reviews in the forum. like Mel said, you gotta know the limitations. refer to his reply.

also, it's actually my 2nd copy of the lens. previous ver. w/ the numbers "0" or "1" in the 3rd number of the serial number (XXX0XXX or XXX1XXX) has an inherent defect: there's loss in resolution at 300mm when used in portrait/vertical orientation. so i had it replaced. so ok na ko. :) it's a good purchase, i would say. 38k in Hidalgo. make sure to check the serial #'s, ok? good luck.
