hi,

i am planning to buy this type of lens since i'm into portraits and small events with low-light conditions. is this the right thing to buy?

the price is very expensive (dhs7700) and thinking of getting the sigma counterpart (http://www.sigma-photo.co.jp/english/lens/standardzoom/28_70_28.htm) instead. what are the pros and cons of these two? am i comparing the right lens?

thanks for your help!

You using it on a DSLR or Film? For digital the 28-70 would not be wide enough for events, I find even 24mm just barely adequate for events. For portrait on the other hand the 28-70 would be perfect.

Try looking at the 17-55mm, which should suit events better and useable for portraits too.

Nikon 28-70mm is great for portraits but will not be wide enough on dSLR because of the crop factor. The Nikon 17-55, being a digital lens, would be a better lens to cover events.

I'm not too familiar with the Sigma but I checked the link you posted and it's a digital lens. If that is so, then it retains its 28-70mm focal length as opposed to the Nikon which becomes roughly a 42-105mm when used with a dSLR. :)

you can also check out the 3rd party lenses within that range.

-tamron 17-50 /2.8 around 25k locally (no silent motor)
-sigma 18-50 / 2.8 no idea (maybe 25k-ish)
-tokina 16-50 /2.8 coming this september

any first hand experience with the tamron 17-50 / f2.8??

the sigma 18-50 is pretty popular... though there are some units with faulty colors (based from user inputs)

i think Henry's has it in stock (canon mount).

I have the chance to get a Nikon 35-70 f/2.8 for a real low price of only 9thousand pesos, do you think it would be worth it? I already have a 17-55 f/2.8, 18-70 f/3.5-4.5, 12-24 f/4, 50 f/1.8, 105 f/2.5 and 80-200 f/2.8 and 2 DSLR bodies and 1 (surviving) Film Body. I hope to buy another DSLR next year, I'm really tempted to get this lens for that body and my film body. Is is really as good as the 28-70 AFS F/2.8?

BTW the 35-70 is in really good condition

As far as sharpness is concerened the 35-70 will rival the 28-70, its in the focusing speed it lacks.

Another thing to note re the 35-70mm f/2.8 is the zoom ring is the push/pull type. Better to try it out to be sure you're comfortable using it. :)

In my experience, the 35-70mm f2.8D is soft wide open. By f4-5.6 though, it rivals the "Beast" in sharpness, color, & contrast. At a fraction of a price, that is still saying something.

Push-pull zooms are prone to trapping dust inside though.

I think it's important to note that it's being sold at that price with no warranty whatsoever. :)

Nevertheless, the lens is more than a keeper... one has to own one to know why everyone is raving about it so... :)

It's already in the Nikon best of the best by Bjorn Rorslett, 1st time I use this lens I was really thrown back at the sharpness and details. It is perfect for portrait/wedding shoots. This and the 85 1.4 IMO is the real statement of a pro lens. Just be aware that it is very heavy and huge and will be like a brick after hours of shooting. Aside form being sharp the 28-70 focus real fast even in lowlight that is with my F100 and D70, should be fsater in a D2x ha Earl.......be careful though with flare always put the equally large lenshood on it....

Btw, 17-55 2.8 DX is equally good and a bit better wide open but there are some bad samples out there so be wary. Also, just in case Nikon pushes thru with their FF in the near future which is rumored to be priced competitively than the EOS, the 28-70 2.8 AFS becomes the perfect wedding lens.

I know... I own one... :) Just made the clarification as to why it's being sold cheap. Just never been one to support "grey" units (no warranty)... not pertaining to yours though, Earl!

This thread has me thinking again about my 28-70. I haven't used it in months and was contemplating on selling it for the 105 macro VR. But each time, some little voice tells me -don't do it!

What to do, what to do....

Let me think about it some some more. It's hard to let it go since it's perfect for these types of shots.

My wife can't help but laugh when she saw it beside the 70-200. She thought the 70-200 was huge :)

Weight-wise it's not that bad. You can probably hand-hold it for 2-3 minutes before putting it down and taking a break. Focus speed is nothing like my other AFS lenses. It's instantaneous! Will try to post pics later.

Cool Earl! I bought it because I'm a low-light junkie. :)
Also, this is a very flexible lens. With a set of teleconverters, you would also have a very usable 280mm f2.8, 340mm f3.5?, and a 400mm f4 (just like the one in the 200-400VR!).

You can also buy a set of extension tubes and use it as a very sharp macro just like what this guy did. http://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=61674&page=14

jay, this lens precedes the 24-70mm f2.8. it's a pretty old lens, but the IQ is definitely up there with the newer 24-70mm. I think it sells for about 50k locally (assuming you find one) but be aware there's a reason why it's called 'the beast'.

thanks for the comment, i was told this is really a huge and heavy lens, i was really eyeing for the 24-70 but i think its actually to much for me now financially speaking.

i was wondring if the 28-70 is a good alternative? im really looking for a nikkor zoom lens at 2.8 thats why these two are my only options
