Any Advantages and Disadvantages of Canon 400D compared with other Camera new models?

Things I like most on my 400D...
- Low noise at high ISO
- Auto sensor cleaning
- WB fine tuning via WB SHFT/BKT menu
- Picture Styles prove to be effective
- Flash exposure lock, very-very useful
- Very lightweight body

Things I don't like on my 400D...
- No second command wheel (e.g. separate command wheels to adjust aperture and speed separately)
- No spot metering
- Most common functions embedded in menus rather than dedicated dial/buttons (e.g. exposure and flash compensations); i miss my Minolta
- Too much plastic in the body, may not last in extreme rugged environment

Sir Jose,

Very interesting points. Especially with the" too much plastic" compared with other cam models that has an alloy components. But at the same time its ok coz its light weight.

Other find it imbalance especially if you use such heavy weight lens,it out weights the body. = )

I like my 400D because
- as Mr. De luna said, its low noise at high ISO settings
- its customizable picture style options
- its 2.5in LCD screen as compared to the 350D's 1.8in screen

what's lacking in the 400D is a lower ISO level below 100. I always used the ISO 50 setting in my Powershot G2.

i agree with all of them....
things i like with my 400d
- its auto sensor cleaning,
- lightweight body,
- flash exposure,
- lcd 2.5 inches,
- and its customize style picture , the lens kits package

What I like with my 400d:
- low noise at ISO 800 (I don't use noise removal software on this ISO)
- 3FPS drive mode
- Sensor cleaning
- 2.5" LCD
- 10megapix
- Lightweight body
- Picture styles
- and my Dad's film EOS EF lens are compatible.. hehe.

Disappointed on:
- small handgrip, I have more stabilization with my film Canon EOS 750 (it has bigger handgrip though)
- slow USB transfer rate, I have to remove my CF and put it on a card reader.

.. yet still I love this toy..

in addition to what was said already.

I like...
lens/accessories availability

I dont like...
a bit small for my hands, id prefer the size of the 30D or 5D *drool*

I remedied the small handgrip by installing a Battery Grip (BG-E3). It made my 400D more stable and gave me more area to handle it. I got a compatible one at Amazon.com. Its branded as Opteka but its the same mold as the original Canon BG-E3 for half the price.

I never use my camera for downloading my shots. I always take out the CF and use a card reader. Yes, very true, its faster that way and while downloading to your PC, you can load another CF card and use your camera immediately.

Go with what your budget can bring you. Basta go ahead and buy. Its useless to keep on waiting because the new models keep on coming. But you have to seize the day and start shooting regardless what model you buy. Its not the camera but the love for photography.

p.s. I never regretted my purchase of the 400D. I love the camera!

thanx guys! appreciate all your inputs:)

i tested the 400d last time and it's body is quite small into my grip, but again this can also be an advantage as far as size is concern (lighter & less bulkier).

by feb, its 30D or 400D depends on the budget available...ty again!

the canon 28-135 IS is a nice lens, and the 18-125 from sigma has good reviews also...or you can complement your kitlens with a good telephoto plus the 50mm 1.8 for low light shooting

Ricky, I got mine from Amazon.com and its a generic BG-E3. It looks and feels like the real thing but without the Canon brand. It was roughly around P4,000 when the dollar was still P50 to $1. I guess Mon's Hidalgo pricing is the most current.

400d is a good investment. My 400d is my first cam, and I'm very satisfied with it. Although it really depends on what kind of use you're going to have for your cam, right? :D

The only glitch I noticed about the 400d is that if you keep using the built in flash, I think it hangs about after 10 uses of continuous use or something like that. But aside from that, I'm pretty satisfied with it. :D

its a matter of preference...checking out the review between the 400d and 30d...image quality is almost or if not at par with each other. I own a 30d because 1) of its size since i have big hands, 2)ergonomics. but here are the features of the 30d over the 400d...if you can live without this features....then a 400d would be sufficient. (at least you would have the 10megapixel sensor and dust removal mechanism/system.

1)spot metering- if you really need this badly then 30d has it...but I just use spot metering in maybe 15 percent of my shots.

2)boosted ISO to 3200- I dont use this ISO this much due to the noise

3)1/8000 shutter speed-

4)5 frames per second continuos shoooting

5)magnesium aloy body

6)ergonomics and control

technically i dont use the other features that much....but if a 400d is as big as a 30d or as big as the 300d even if it has a plastic body.... Id go for the 400d. then again the 400d is too small for my hands.

disadvantages for me:
1. imbalanced when im using my telephoto because of the camera's lightweight body
2. too small for my hands without the battery pack
3. need to press another button to adjust aperture in manual mode

that's all I can think of at the moment.. :)

hello guys! im kinda new here and 400D is my first DSLR. so i'm thinking, what is spot-metering???

Metering - measuring the brightness of the subject to determine exposure. There are 3 generic types, matrix, center weighted and spot metering.

Joey Alaiza
03-20-2007, 01:52 PM
ah, ok. 400D's metering mode consists of: Evaluate metering, partial metering and center weighted metering. Matix - meters all the area in the frame...recommended for most situations
Center weighted - gives more emphasis on the center of the frame
Spot - meters closest subject. assures subject is properly exposed eventhough background is much brighter than subject

Not closest subject.... the part of the subject thats within the small center spot area is metered.:)

BTW, coz of budget considerations, i havent bought a dedicated Canon Speedlite yet. This past Holy Week, i've used my ol'reliable Sunpak generic flash to take some photos.

My question is: aside from the obvious non-availability of autoflash features ( being a non-dedicated Canon flash), is there any risk of inducing damage to the camera's electronics with constant use of my Sunpak ?

Not anymore with the newer models of dslrs. Before in the days of the d60 or even 10d, the flash is mechanically activated (solenoid?). Now it is electronic.

Also, your term "autoflash" means differently to me. In fact your Sunpak is actually autoflash, while the canon dedicated speedlights are E-TTL, w/c means metering of the flash is taken from the film plane (or in this case, the sensor plane?). Autoflash is metered by a sensor in the flash itself. But since it is not a canon flash, you just have to match the aperture (and even speed) of the camera in manual mode to the recommended by the flash for a particular ISO.

I have been using my Sunpak for about one year before it got busted, and it has worked just fine. You are just hampered creatively when your options in aperture or shutter speed is limited by autoflash, but otherwise, it works fine. In fact, with the d60 and 300d, I believe the autoflash seems better in getting the exposure right than e-ttl (1) at that time. ETTL-2 was a great improvement, though Nikon is clearly still 2 steps ahead of canon when it comes to flash. But ettl-2 is a big step and if you came from the earlier ones, you know this to be true.

So, go ahead, use your sunpak. If I am not mistaken, starting with the 20d and 350d onwards, the flash triggering is now electronic and not mechanical so there is nothing to burn out or destroy the shutter assy. Otherwise, just make sure the flash voltage at the shoe is below 250 volts. The sunpak is usually low compared to other brands.

Finally scratched that upgrade itch that's been bugging me since the 400D was released. Happy owner of a brand spanking new camera as of today.

What I love:

2.5" screen - Big difference compared to the 1.8" of my old 300D
Speed, speed, speed - Kinda got used to the 3 second delay during startup of the 300D, but it was the same lag after it went to sleep plus the slower CF card write time that annoyed me more.
Custom functions - although I installed the wasia hack onto my 300D, not all options were available. Not so on the 400D

What I think could be improved:

Grip - could be a bit chunkier, but it's better than the 350D. The 300D grip was just right for me.

Hi Mel Enriquez !!! :)

Thanks for that very informative reply on my query re: the Sunpak flash. I do stand corrected. I meant " E-TTL" when i mentioned " autoflash" instead.

After reading your reply, i'm now more comfortable in using the Sunpak in tandem with my 400D.... that is, until i have enough dough to buy a 580EX, hehe.

It's the modelling light feature.
It allows you to guage the effect of the shadows that the flash will create.
Similar to using strobe lights. and very useful when you're using multiple lights.

Pretty neat party trick to get everyone to look at you though.

BTW, coz of budget considerations, i havent bought a dedicated Canon Speedlite yet. This past Holy Week, i've used my ol'reliable Sunpak generic flash to take some photos.

My question is: aside from the obvious non-availability of autoflash features ( being a non-dedicated Canon flash), is there any risk of inducing damage to the camera's electronics with constant use of my Sunpak ? sunpak 383 super and vivitar 283 are ok for digital much better if vivitar 285 hv, i also have 580 ex and its not that good as canon claims... http://www.popphoto.com/lighting/3983/vivitar-285hv-review.html

My 400D is my first dSLR. Actually, it is my first serious camera. I got it last November and have used it only on special events and family affairs. I had my first shoot a couple of weekends ago as part of a creative photography class and I'm happy with the 400D (my skills as a photographer needs work though... not the camera's problem).

What I like about the 400D?
- lightweight (if with kit lens)
- Picture styles (http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/picturestyle/file/index.html)
- LCD size

Recent changes to the way I use my 400D:
- I'm now shooting RAW
- I'm now shooting Manual (after learning a lot of things in my class about SLRs- thanks to Allan, Anton and Bong of The Lightroom Studios)
- I focus using the * button (see http://chrishumphreys.typepad.com/chris_humphreys/photography_tips/index.html, scroll down to the April 7, 2007 entry - Better way to Focus)

Canon 400D + kit lens + 70-200mm F4 L + Battery Grip

i must say than i am very pleased with the 400d. i got this as a second body to my 30d and it complements each other when i go out of town. the weight (or less weight) than the 30d is a plus. the only thing i don't like is that it doesn't have spot metering and it's only 3 fps.

i used to think that the one lcd display for viewing and cam settings was a bitt off but i'm glad to have beeen wrong

Advantages:
-EOS integrated sensor cleaning system
-big LCD screen with speedy processing for quick viewing (some camera from a different company, takes about 2-3 secs before you can preview your shot.. bummer!)
-easy to operate & navigate thru the menus. Easy user interface
-picture styles
-Camera settings and adjustment on LCD monitor
-some features are the same as with 30D (Very Good!)
-not that pricey!

Disadvantages:
-Plastic body.
-static materials on mirror and viewfinder that generates dusts.

*I just despises people who says that that the 400D is for beginners… (and he’s holding a Nikon) so does that make him a pro???? peace!! :Dum: no offense meant...

josephmonzon

pro:
dust sensor
large lcd
full compatibility with all lenses
nice weight and size for asians

cons
olastc body
lack of controls

verdict: its a good and versatile small dslr, sometimes small but packs a lot of power is nice .

Leslie, What is your budget? if you can stretch it a bit then get the 24-105mm F/4 L nice focal length with IS pa cya or if you prefer a f/2.8 lens then go for the 24-70mm L wala lang cya IS and a bit more expensive here. but if medyo gipit then look for the 28-135mm, these are good walkaround lens and is nice for events like parties, etc..... you dont really need a long zoom unless you plan to shoot concerts from the back :)

hey daniel thanks for the reply. i have spent the enitre week thinking about the ef70-300 f/4.5-6 isu or the ef 70-200mm f/4LU or the ISU version. and ofcourse because of the sale they have.

i have crossed out the 70-300 already and contemplating between the last two options. but then i got feedback to get the 70-200 2.8 instead. So right now im totally confused.

Budget wise the 29,500 was within budget. so the 24-105 will be enough for parties and across tables kinda shot?

thanks again

Hi leslie! or you may want to consider the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 XRDi macro..has a lot of good reviews and a bit cheaper that the L ones. I personally find this better that the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG macro that I used to have as well.

Leslie, Enough na yang 24-105 unless the place is really big. :) Check the net for reviews of the 24-105L, Richmon is correct in saying the Ramron 28-75 is a nice lens but iba rin ang L as for the 70-200 f/2.8 I find the f/4 IS more practical and if you check the reviews in the net, It is sharper than the f/2.8 version. of course the f/2.8 will give you a shallower DOF and is a must if you are a sports shooter but for general photography the f/4 is very good not to mention much lighter too to carry around :)

What I like about my 400d:
1. Big screen (2.5")
2. Lightweight
3. Low noise in high ISO
4. It's a Canon!
5. 3fps
6. 10 mp
7. Its battery can last up to 2 weeks on normal shoots (no nightscapes and not whole day shoots)
8. You can just charge the battery event hough its not yet fully drained - Battery care no more!
9. It does accept ALL lenses made by Canon, no problem worrying if the lens would work or not.
10. Size- very easy to transport (although there is a downside with this)
11. Picture style- very useful specially for jpeg shooters

What I dislike about my 400d:
1. Size- Although its easy to transport because of its small size, the downside comes to the handle area. That area is just too short, it could be better if it was longer by about an inch. The weight distribution is just not right. When hand-holding it with just my right hand (using 50mm), the weight/force goes to the lower part of my hand (below the pinky).
2. Bulb- When shooting bulb in nightscapes, the lcd display is on because the "time counter"(or whatever you call it) is displayed in that large display thus eating so much of the battery life.
3. Some white spots/ noise showing at a 6min exposure ISO100
4. ICS. Is it effective? I don't think so.
5. No CLS (Creative Lighting System)

Hi! Just bought my 400D this weekend. I'm having so much fun with it!:) My previous digicam was an IXUS 800 IS. It wasn't too bad for a compact camera - took decent shots - but it just doesn't compare to my new dSLR.
Btw, I'm looking for a 50mm F/1.8 II lens 'coz my friend told me it's a really good, inexpensive lens. Would any of you know where I can source one of these? Heard they're in demand daw eh, so it's kinda hard to look for one.
As I'm a newbie to the dSLR world, appreciate any feedback you can give at this point. Thanks ulit!:D

I love 400D! (Well I love both my cameras because they're both so friggin' expensive!) I named my 400D Carmelita (I know, pathetic) and even given the choice of any other camera, I would still prefer this for a second body. IQ is good, it's small, light, the sensor cleaning is invaluable. Lugging around a 5D and a 30D will just break your neck even with Optech straps!

Hi Nino,

The 18-55mm kit lens is an excellent lens. Together with your 10-22mm, add a telephoto say a 70-200 2.8 or 70-200 2.8 IS (your 2nd option is a good one too) and you will have a very solid set up. If you are budgeted, the 70-300 IS (or is is it 75-300) is also a good option.

Good luck.

bought mine last last week.. my first DSLR.. (i previously shoot with my H5)

likes:
- interchangeable lenses (..if only i had other lenses)
- more advance controls
- easier control setup
- less noise in high ISO
- more accessories (filters, flash, etc.)
- love the "kick" of the shutter when it clicks! =)

dislikes:
- miss the macro and 12x optical zoom of my H5 (got to have other lenses fast!)
- miss the 3" LCD of my H5
- miss the image stabilizer from my H5 (no built-in anti-shake in 400d?)

Happy 400d owner!

Good luck.

get the first one sir, for me though. it gives u an IS, good range wide to semi tele to get those group shots to portrait shots. just my two cents..:)

Sir I was wondering where the april 7, 2007 tip better way to focus is. the post only available is until april 17,2007 thanks!:)

Hi! Go t my camera last November 2007. So far, it managed to exceed my expectations. I like shooting in JPEG though coz I noticed that there's significantly more noise when shooting in RAW especially in the high ISOs. Other than that, I highly recommend it especially for someone like me who's just starting to learn the ropes.

I'd like to ask for some help though...

My sis was using (actually... playing) around with my 400D last night. When I woke up this morning, I found my 50mm f1.8 lens that was attached to my 400D broken. When I asked my sis about it, she said she dropped the camera while the 50mm was attached. The 50mm got shattered but the camera was intact. There were no cracks nor scratches. I checked the seals (where two sections meet) and they're still ok. Lapat na lapat pa din. Walang nakaangat. I visually checked the mirror and the sensor. Everything seems to be ok. Nothing seems to be broken or out of place. Except for the lens, it looks like it was never accidentally dropped.

My concern though is I am not really sure if everything is ok with the camera. I'm concerned that the sensor was shaken and/or dislodged out of place (knowing that a camera - as the camera's Instruction Manual succinctly states - is a precision instrument).

I sure hope that everything is indeed ok and is not only skin-deep.

How can I better visually gauge or check if the camera is still in good working condition? I'm not being a cheapskate but I don't want to bring it to a Canon Service Center for a check-up if I can do it myself. How much will a Canon check-up cost? How long will it take?

Sorry for the long post. Can't get over the fact that something like that happened to my 'baby'. Can't stop worrying about it either... I haven't done anything at work today because of that... hehehe...

This nifty little piece of plastic and metal is my first ever camera, and I love it to bits. (: I got it just last October 2007 for my next 5 birthdays + Christmas + graduation (and I paid for half of it, too!).

It's served me well - I'm in a photography org in my college, and we document events at our university every so often, or go out to shoot just for kicks.

My gear is just the body, the kit lens and a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II, and I'm happy with just about that. I'm not a big fan of flash anyway. XD

It's pretty basic, and the settings are very easy to understand. It's also quite small and light compared to other cameras, so I guess it's more compact and easier to lug around. Having 10 megapixels is pretty good, and a nice 2.5 inch LCD to go with it.

All in all, I'd say that the 400D is a good starting camera. Although I have no intention of upgrading anytime soon (I'm just a college sophomore and no part-time job), it'd be nice to get a second camera later on for when I hopefully start actually earning out of this love of mine called photography. (:

It's a must to read the manual(?) but you don't have to do it one sitting. You can always shoot then check the manual after if you're not satisfied with the picture or if there's something wrong with it.

Welcome to DPP and Congrats on your new cam. :)
Reading and knowing the camera is a must especially for beginners, understanding the manual is knowing how to properly operate your equipment. It will be an advantage on your part if you know the shortcuts and tricks of the camera.
