Roro Fernandez 01-23-2007, 02:09 AM This could be interesting.. speculation are floating around that if there will be indeed a 40D.. specs would somehow be:
Anti-dust
5D like AF
10.2mp 4 channel sensor (though they were testing a 12 mp one)
Still 1.6 crop for those EF-S lenses
DIGIC III and sensor changes to give better high ISO and lower noise (especially at 1600 and 3200 ISO)
Very similar appearance to 30D
Also new lenses will probably be announced
Canon EF 10-24 F/2.8 L USM
Canon EF 24-70 F/2.8 L USM IS
Canon EF 200mm F/2.8 L USM IS
Rumors, rumors.... :D
Mel Enriquez 01-23-2007, 02:13 AM Joel,
I'm glad you posted this. At least it came from you, not me.
Yesterday pm, I went to Quiapo and talked with one of my favored vendors (I won't say who) and asked how much some canon bodies cost. I asked if the price of the 30d went down. The first thing he said is that to forget the 30d! He said that Canon will be fielding a 30d replacement for sure this Feb.
Am seriously looking for a partner/body for my 20d and re-calibrated (and now sharp from 24-105mm) L lens. If the price is all right, maybe I'll go for this. Or start hunting for cheap 20Ds or 30Ds:).
Frankly, I can't say more than what you have posted. My own source will get into trouble. :Dum::D
Glenn Francisco 01-23-2007, 07:43 AM hmmm...i just talked to someone from canon canada and....let's just wait.hehehehe
nino_carandang 01-23-2007, 08:48 AM hoping that ann or tiff can reply.
raymondgayondato 01-23-2007, 09:25 AM are there any speculations how much the 40D's initial SRP? hmmm.. :)
Jo Avila 01-23-2007, 10:06 AM Guys,
I am holding a 40d unit in my hands and the specs listed seem to be off.
Whoops! What I have, as it turns out, is a 400d. My pinky was covering one of the zeros :D

:RedEye:  :BlackEye: you got me on this one
tonio_garcia 01-23-2007, 05:49 PM Some posts on the web say a 1.6x factor and 10mp would not make sense anymore. Rumor is it will be 1.3x and 12mp, plus the other specs in Roro's post above.
Let's see...
mayk_cruz 01-23-2007, 06:32 PM Canon extended their rebate period to flush out inventories of the 30D and 5D, this could be the reason.
The long awaited upgrade is surely a welcome "rumor"... This February? WoW!!!
I would pick a hammer and hit my piggy bank for a 40D.
@Tonio: would the current EF-S lens still be applicable for a 1.3x crop factor?
raymondgayondato 01-24-2007, 12:48 AM 40D + Canon EF 10-24 F/2.8 L + Canon EF 24-70 F/2.8 L IS + good 'ol Canon EF 70-200 F/2.8 L IS :D

Im also lusting for the 5D :) if not the 40D!!

Mario,
I asked around for the price of this recently, and they said it's P127k now. Darn, I'd feel bad if I bought one a year ago. It was P205k, then. After about 6 months or so, it was around P180k.
If the 5d goes down sub P100k, I will start saving up for it!! :D
Only thing that will make it so is if they introduce a replacement to it. But the 5d would still be a viable option. If that happens, and if I were a 5d owner, I simply couldn't sell my 5d for less than half I got it from in just 1 year!
Sometimes, you really don't know if you should be happy that prices are dropping or not, because if you buy one yourself, you'll find out that the camera you bought 8-12 months ago to be 40% cheaper!
christopher cortez 01-24-2007, 01:11 PM well just think of it as premium for the memories youve captured in that time frame hehehe
Alan Fontanilla 01-24-2007, 01:17 PM Just buy it with your eyes closed ... and stop asking around how much it costs after you've plunked your cash! Hahaaha .. technology depreciates. Memories are priceless .. parang ....
Canon 5D - P 127,000
4 GB CF Card - P5,000.00
Vacation Trip - P50,000.00
Picture of a Magical Photo Op Moment - priceless (and at 12mp - it better be a darned magical moment!).
Hahahahhaha

Mel,
ive heard that the reason for the price drop for the 5D is that not many are buying because of the high price tag..my reason too hehe..
but its really a splendid camera, ill get it for the quality not just the full frame..even if Canon comes up with an upgrade id still buy the 5D just waiting for it to come down to less than 100k..thats why im not buying EF-S lenses for my 20D..:) hehe
Now to upgrade my computer to take the 12mp files..
but with the 40D coming out hmmmm..choices choices..
raul_echivarre 01-24-2007, 07:31 PM yeah, the prices are going down but what about the supply?
over the holidays up until a week ago, 3 major hidalgo suppliers never bothered to return/answer my call re: 5d. i was willing to pay quiapo retail (10K lower than mall prices but still a bit higher than gray mkt units). even at that, ZERO. infomax can get you a unit from hk with a 3-day turn-around time. by the time i asked, i already lost interest. i guess my timing was really off, that or they're allergic to me. hehehe.
i wonder what the supply situation is right now.
after having gone through all that hassle, i guess it was really a sign that i should wait :)
anyway, if you buy, say, a 7d or any new model, during its intro, i think it's ok because you get to enjoy it's "newness" and "exclusivity" in the market for a longer period of time. it's when you buy in the middle that makes it suck a bit. the novelty is gone but the prices are still steep relatively. if you're going to buy, doing it at the extreme ends of the spectrum makes sense. of course, for most of us, it's not exactly about timing but more of when the cash becomes available... then you buy the best at that moment in time before other "priorities" come into the picture. hehehe.
raul_echivarre 01-24-2007, 07:39 PM and, yes, the 5d is worth the money. i've used it extensively and i tell ya, the megapixel count is at once overrated and underrated. overrated for those who don't ever plan to print large. underrated because there is just so much more pixel info in that piece of real estate we call the sensor. your red in an 8mp cam will be relatively flatter compared to somebody else's red in a 12mp variant. i used to think mp count was overrated until i used one. there really is something to be said about bit-depth. makes photos just a bit more 3d.
what am i saying... i should be dissuading you folks from buying one so that i can get my hands on one first :)

Allan,
Correct!
Well, maybe with eyes open, but eyes wide shut! :D
Or once you buy it, don't ask when for prices anymore when you go to Quiapo. That's what I did. :) Never asked for prices for 8 months or so.
Trouble is you guys keep posting prices here! Darn you folks here!

Mario,
Yes, I agree, the 5d is a splendid camera! I don't know what mk2 or its replacement will be, but even if I were to get a used one later on, as long as the price is lower than the replacement, I'll likely consider it. I wish it were a 5fps though. But that is something they purposely did to differentiate it from the 1d mk2.
The low price is good. In fact, it is in pace (almost) with USA prices. So, that is good. However, it is still can't afford it. Maybe if it will go down to sub-100k, it will get more buyers. I love the bright viewfinder of the 5d and its high ISO performance. My 24-105L would also be perfect with it, as is my 100mm f2 usm.

Raul,
No, they are not alergic to you. My supplier said, that they have a problem with 5d supplies now, but if they had it, it's at P127k. It's not available. So, they didn't call you because they have nothing to sell.
As for buying, I usually wait 3-6 months after a new model is introduced. This affords me to 1)see what the bugs of the new models are. 2) let the price settle down from the initial offering, 3) affords me to save up for this model
It's no. 1 reason that I am concerned about. This is espeicailly if they use newer technologies. The 5d though is amazing as it does not have serious flaws or problems. If any, it was the high ticket price!:) But that is not a product problem. It's a wallet problem!

good to know, mel. thanks. yep, nothing wrong with the 5d. it's really a wallet problem :)
Fherdy Tiongson 01-26-2007, 05:06 PM It's sound good. So my decision is right not buying a new 5D I'll wait for a year.
Even though I'm using D200 and my medium format I'll still buy Canon for my other purpose. Now I have Nikon so Canon will be next.
So I have a system of Nikcan and Canik

Fherdy Tiongson 01-26-2007, 05:08 PM Canon EOS 40D Details Leaked: 10.1 Megapixels
Leaked details about the latest model—the 40D—are making the rounds. The Canon EOS 40D is predicted to sport a 10.1-megapixel image sensor, a 2.5-inch display and some sort of anti-dust feature. For the most part, thats all that's been leaked thus far (even this picture is a mock-up), but it wouldn't take much to assume that it'll cost about as much as the current 30D, or about $1,300.
If Internet moles can be trusted, expect to see the compact flash-friendly EOS 40D on September 26. – Nicholas Deleon

randytamayo 02-05-2007, 12:45 AM Hmm, a 40D announcement may be too soon. When was the 30D released? Feb last year right? Id put more money on a 5D upgrade in PMA. Maybe even a 1Ds MkIII but not 40D. Maybe it is not 40D, they can call it 30D MkII or something... and they'd just up the reso to 10.2MP w/ prolly DIGIC III and anti-dust.
Maybe in Sept 07, then a 40D will come out.
As for the lenses... they'd come out in time for the next 1Ds... they need better glass to maximise the resolving power of the sensor, otherwise, 22MP would be wasted. 22MP is Hassy H2D territory. ;)
zandy_marantal 02-05-2007, 01:19 AM The 30d was nothing more than a minor upgrade to the 20D. Canon is losing market share in this segment due to the Nikon D80 and D200. They need to come up with something to counter this. I'll bet good money that the 40d would be launched this coming PMA in March.
Also, this year is Canon's 75th anniversary. They're supposed to come up with a bang this year including upgrades to their top of the line cameras.
