Hi Guys!

This is my first thread and my first posts as well :)

Question: what is the cheapest lens for Weddings if my budget tights me to 10k?

Given the fact that I have my kit lens and 50mm f1.8, using a 400D.

Hoping for your replies. :)

Will you be using just 1 camera? If so, changing lenses while the wedding is going on will lead to missed shots, and a very angry client.:)

FTT: brand new ba hanap mo? hmm at 10K. medyo mahirap.

if you can stretch that to around 15-17k then you may actually find a used tamron 28-75 2.8. Decent for weddings.

Hi Peter!

Yes I will be using just 1 camera. Wedding shots for hobby lang naman not for business, I mean, not the professional wedding photographer. To be a VA is my dream for now...

Hi Christopher!

Thank you for the suggestion. But is it advisable to use tamron or sigma if I am using a Canon?

try to look for the 28-135mm f 3.5-5.6 ng canon. there may be some people who are letting it off at that price range.

sir pol, yes its ok to use 3rd party lenses. The tamron 17-50 2.8 and 28-75 2.8 are generally accepted as bang for the buck lenses when it comes to 2.8 apertures. They are 1/3 the price of the canon equivalent. Although the USM of canons make them faster when focusing, if you dont have money to burn for them then the tamrons are more than capable.

Yes Pol. Sigma and Tamron are very good 3rd party lenses. I've used Sigma lenses on weddings before, have no complaints. :)

What is wrong with the kit lens and 50/1.8? I guess what you need is 75-300 to increase your range. I'm not sure about the price but P10k should be enough for 2nd hand unit.

I am assuming you have flash already. If none, that's more important for now.

I agree with Dino. You need flash more now than you need lens. Your lens will be good enough for now. You cannot shoot without light though. When looking for a flash, get one with a head the swivels so you don't throw your flash directly to your subjects.

Sir Dino, there's nothing wrong with my two lens  Its just that I really need to increase the range and increase also the angle (wide), in short, you are right! :)

Your assumption is also right, I dont have my flash yet. im dreaming for a 580ex or 480ex (correct me if im wrong). Im trying to shoot (atleast) without a flash with the help of the lights from the videographer :)

Sir, it was mention here that you are also conducting wedding photography seminar? Please let me know if there are plans.

Thank you. Pol

i talk to a friend before and he mentioned a 17 - 55 is already good enough you get the wide and partial zoom especially when you go around the place. And yes flash is very important or look for a friend to borrow from so you don't have to buy yet.

i read it here somewhere, I dont recall who said it, that using a flash is an instant upgrade for the lens... and its true, that's why before I bought my tamron f2.8, I got a flash first.

Go for the 580ex since it has a longer range than the 480ex, I think :). Price is at 18K in hidalgo.

hmm what about the 17-40 f4 L. it's not cheap at all ah! but it's cheap na for it's quality. i know a couple of wedding photogs who use this as their bread and butter. and it can really do well. :)

question, which is better, the 70 - 200 or 70 - 300? i think i heard from someone that the effective range of a zoom lens is 3 times its smallest focal length. which is 70mmx3 = 210mm. is it true? :)

Paolo Reyes

I would agree with the others who have posted here:

FLASH: If you do not want to be at the mercy of the videogs, this may be your best bet. You can normally move around, to make up for focal range gaps, but light is difficult to live without.

I used to think of flash as unnecessary, and that natural light was always better. Eversince I got myself a Sigma EF-500 Super, flash has changed the way I take photos indoors. Someone said "it's an instant upgrade to your lens". I'd say it opens new possibilities. Available light is still an option, especially if you have a fast lens, but flash expands your creative options.

Which then brings me to....

LENS: If you need a good budget lens, you can save up a bit more and grab a second hand lens. Third party lenses are ok, as long as you choose carefully.

I currently use the Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 as my all-around lens and I'm very happy with it. It may not be a Canon L, BUT it is very sharp, even at wide apertures, and it has an acceptably useful zoom range. Build quality is acceptable as well.

For weddings though, I would think you should expect to be moving around quite a bit to get good coverage with any wide-medium range zoom, from encompassing shots, to tighter portraits and candid grabs.

Just my two cents, as a fellow hobbyist....

I have been using the Sigma 18-200 for more than six years now and i have no problem and it is my workhorse. However if you have to cover for a wedding a second camera or maybe a third camera will do it. If you are really on a tight budget buy second hand but better if its brand new. :)

I think you meant the 50 f1.8.... not 2.8 right?

There is very little chance you would need a super tele in a wedding ceremony. And also try to think if you would have the chance to switch lenses without missing a precious shot. Unless you have a backup body of course... w/c is probably the most important thing you should have anyway. In this case, your kit lens would do the job. Alot of pro wedding photographers use the 17-55 f2.8. And nothing else...

Weddings only happen once to most people.... do not mess up!!! so always bring a 2nd body, extra batteries, flash, etc etc. :)

I don't have experience with sigma 70-300 but I feel there's a big use of that lens in some churches. There are churches you can't be near the couple during ceremony like Manila Cathedral, Shrine of Jesus.

It's very good also when capturing candids.

It maybe bad for low light churches and indoor reception. You'll need flash.

Sorry. Its 50mm f1.8. I read somewhere nga that you only use the super tele (is 70-200mm f2.8 included) in less than 10 percent of the total shots taken. Big percentage of the total shots were taken by a 17-35 mm f2.8 or 17-50 or 55mm f2.8 lens. Kaya lang parang bitin ako sa 18-70mm kit lens. Any suggestion?
Thanks.

Problem with going tele is that you will need ALOT of light, or flashpower. If you feel you need to have more reach, then get the 18-200 VR. It's the swiss army knife of the Nikkor lenses.... it does alot, but of course Pro lenses will have better IQ.:)

i usualy just use a 24-70...and not change my lens. thats part of being a wedding photographer(or any photog)...if you need reach...then your legs will bring you closer.

Yup you can survive with a kit lens....there was a wedding i covered... i left my lenses ( my cam bag actualy) at the brides hotel room:Scared: ... didnt have an alternative but use my kit lens (separate bag with some more extra bat.)
