Hi...begginner here....

Just got a 350D with kit lens...thinking of getting the 50mm macro lens and the EF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 non usm.

Can anybody give me input on the zoom lens?? Is it worth it? Was thinking of getting this to practice and as i get better maybe upgrade to better lens?? Any other recommendations as to what zoom lens i can get? i"m interested in sports photography thats why i was thinking of that zoom lens.

Thanks

For the 75-300 lens that you are planning to get: You might find pictures from the range of 75-200 to be the only ones usable. The closer you zoom in to 300 is already soft, but you can always use the magic of digital processing to sharpen your images.

I have a EF 75-300mm USM, Non-IS. "I can go-up close as a 300 x 1.6 Cropfactor can get." And since this is the only zoom lens that i have in that range, I'm happy w/ it. But really, its difficult to handle and pics will always result to camera-shake - especially when it's not an IS.

But my two-cents, I recommend that you save up to buy something less than the 300mm (that is, if you really don't need that range). maybe a 200mm/135mm w/ wider aperature is enough for sports photo? w/ the 75-300mm, add in the 5.6 aperature... indoors, ummm... bitin siguro even w/ high ISO. Inputs from other photogs who does sports photography are most valuable.

let us know if you have a new toy already... :)

I tried this lens and it was bad.

I would prefer the Sigma 70-300 DG Macro instead of the Canon 75-300.

The Canon is just too 'cheap' to be any real good. 3rd party lenses will give you better performance until you can afford Canon's better glass like the 70-300 IS USM.

I agree with Dave's suggestion, the Sigma 70-300 APO II at P11,900 brand new is better than this. You might also consider Sigma/Tamron 18-200 (around PP19,900) or 28-300 (around P15,000) if you want wide angle coverage.

Sigmas are sold by JTPHoto and Tamron by Henry's.

A better lens would be the Canon 55-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM II. It's one of the sharper consumer zooms...

i heard good things about the 28-300 from canon but theyre overpriced.

a nice piece is tamron's 18-200. dont let the reviews turn you off, the lens is nice the pictures are sharp. just make sure you follow the general rule of 1/focal length when shooting pictures.

the key is to remember that this is not a fast lens, you cannot handhold this at 1/100 when you are at 200mm. well i once did and the picture was still nice but that was a fluke.

also remember that this is not supposed to be used for low light photographs. This is a walkaround lens that you would use while travelling, it is small and light and the pictures are very decent.

for 22k (henrys, no more promo) i think its way better than the 75-300 from canon.

all i have to say is that this glass is awfully slow. it's a good "practice" lens for newbies so they'd have a "taste" of what telephoto can do as they venture to acquire better lenses. it can actually perform ok, not great but just ok in strong light situations.

@ derick
with all due respect, not everybody have deep pockets like some of the members here. i have a taste for those L lenses as well but let's not forget the fact that more people use "regular" glass instead of the expensive Ls that we use. basic respect lang, doesn't mean that you have regular glass you have to feel like your equipments are "just to be toyed around" with (i personally got offended with that remark). yes it's something to have those high-end lenses and i understand naman why you recommend high-end glass (ibang klase ren naman kasi eh! kahit ako hindi na babalik sa non-L!) but not everybody can start off with them right away. some can't even purchase them.

try to see the point in my light.
cheers!

John

Miguel, you might wanna consider the Canon 70-200 f/4 L. It's light and it's one of the sharpest lenses in the Canon inventory. Best of all, the price is just a bit over Tamron or Sigma.

The 75-300 is aptly nicknamed Canon's worst lens, you have been warned. Get a 55-250 which is a cotillion times better or a 70-300 if you have the cash and really need the 300 end.
