I am looking of getting a very good camera strap that can take the load of my Canon 30D camera with a Canon BGE2 battery grip and also a Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS lens.I am actually debebating between camera straps made by either OpTech or Lowepro. For those of you out there who have had any experiences with both OpTech and Lowepro camera straps, which among the two brands do you personally prefer?
THANKS.

Both optech and Lowepro have good qualities. Anyways, I have a Lowepro neoprene for my wife's D50 and a Tamrac boomerang for my D80. Try considering Tamrac. It's hard to find Lowepro straps even in hidalgo. For Lowepro, check the Transporter.

I use optech. It makes the camera feel lighter around your neck.

Op Tech is nice comfortable because the neoprene is quite wide but the Tamrac has a cf holder attached to the strap you can buy Tamrac at JT.

hello michael,, went to hidalgo the other day to buy me some lowepro neckstrap,, sadly,, out of stock sya sa henry's,, so i bought a tamrac boomerang neckstrap at watson at Php1,100.00 ( it's slightly cheaper,, lowepro goes for Php1,200.00 in henry's ) i like tamrac neckstrap because it does the job,, and it has a CF/SD card holder on both side of the strap.. but between the two ( optech and lowepro ) i go for Lowepro anytime,, hope this helps,, goodluck with your purchase:)

Hey Tina, I'm sure those Optech straps are really helping support your 2 birding set-ups. :) When did you get the 30D?

I use Optech Pro-loop straps which I got in Singapore. Comes out to P930 per strap.

Tried the neoprene neckstraps of Tamrac...

Comments: Good support and easy on the neck reduces the pain of having your camera hanging round your neck the whole day...funny thing is it tends to smell maasim after your sweat is absorbed by the neoprene and the metal buckles corrode too. Kakatakot mahulog yung cam pag naging maruppok yung buckle.

So now i just stick to the good old nikon straps supplied with my camera...or might be interested with the Domke gripper....maybe...just maybe...domke's stick well to your shoulder even on a light run....

i have lowepro neoprene strap.

pros: comfortable on the neck. good feel of textures and lightweight.

cons: the buckles gets easily being rusty. also, the straps on the camera part (not with the quick release strap) can easily be slipped from the buckle if you didn't secure it properly by looping the ends back to it. it happened to me twice and luckily my camera didn't fell off to the ground.

I've been using Optech for more than a year now. It makes your gear feels lighter & comfortable. Unlike the ones that goes w/ the camera parang na sun burn ka sa hapdi. I got mine from Info max around P1,500 (i guess).

I'm also shopping for one but I prefer a narrower neoprene strap with anti slip rubber grips, a strip of leather or similar material to keep the neoprene from stretching too much, and a simple strap and fix buckles instead of flimsy quick release ones - which brand and model fits the bill?

Try Tamrac camera straps. I guess they are being brought in by JT Photo, they have a booth in Photoworld. You''ll have a wide range of selection there & a 10% discount to go w/ it.

i used to use the optech straps. yes, it does feel lighter but i got rid of it.

there were times during a shoot where i had to run and my gear was bouncing hard because of the strap so i removed it and fastened the quick release buckles that were attached to the camera.

Hey Tina, I'm sure those Optech straps are really helping support your 2 birding set-ups. :) When did you get the 30D?

I use Optech Pro-loop straps which I got in Singapore. Comes out to P930 per strap.

Oooops sorry TJ now lang I saw this. Got it December 2006 right before our US trip (body only).

I recently tried the Tamrac straps with the CF card thingie that are attached to both sides of the straps. Hmmmmmm I STILL prefer the optech Pro-Loop straps for all my stuff. I like kasi the feature wherein you have a choice of shortening the straps by removing the second part of the strap.

Carrying two cameras with long lenses is no joking matter di ba... specially for a woman. What I do is hang the main camera around my neck and the other one (the one w/o the second half of the optech pro-loop strap) I sling around my right arm so that I can still take pictures without worrying that my other camera might fall off or something.

Another thing that I do is whenever I am not using the camera, I keep both cameras with the short straps lang and attach the 2nd part of the straps to my camera bag and attach them back to the camera when I have to use them na again.

Galing talaga ng Pro-loop strap ng Optech - hindi pa ako stock holder ng Op-Tech nyan ha ... super promote na ako ha :D That's how much I like the Optech Pro-loop straps.

Looks cool Florencio, where did you get that strap?

I myself use Optech and the Tamrac neoprene straps. They both do their jobs well and reduce weight and strain on your neck and shoulder. I slightly go for the Optech thogh because its easier to switch orientation with that strap. Its just that the Tamrac strap often falls in front of the VF when switching from horizontal to vertical, its annoying how much you move the strap around. The Optech simply is better in use IMO.

@Jerome: I bought it from a local store (www.vistek.ca (http://www.vistek.ca)); unfortunately, I'm not based in the Philippines.

@Allan: It is comfortable! I am a little weary at its strength because it seem so "lightweight", especially when I put on my largest lens.

I would still like to see the new Crumpler straps when they become available, they look nice, but I have to see if the underside of the pad has a non-slip material. I prefer it didn't because I always sling my camera across my body instead of having it hang from my neck.

The "crumpler" print on the bottom side of the strap is made of grippy material, based on the tech specs in the website. Also saw this feature advertised on youtube.

I just picked up a Crumpler Industry Disgrace camera strap in the camo print. The Crumpler logo on the underside of the padded area isn't as grippy as on other straps , which in my case was a plus. A nice surprise was that the strap was quite long. I wear my camera across my body and with this strap I was able to get my camera at about hip level. This strap is a keeper.

On a sidenote, I cannot recommend the Skooba Superbungee strap that I posted about earlier. When removing the Skooba to install the Crumpler strap, a small tug caused the Skooba strap to come undone from the eyelet. I would hate to think what would have happened if I were standing up and the camera was around my neck! I think the problem lies with the webbing, it is too fine/smooth and there is not enough friction to hold a heavy camera and lens. Owners of this strap, be careful!

love it. great weight reduction, feels real secure. it's slimmer and more compact than the others which is a plus for packing in a bag. i like that it has a patch of suede for grip, it doesn't slip when i put it on my shoulder. the strap's removable too with release buckle

under 1k? i think you'll be having a hard time finding one which is of really good quality and yet, goes for under 1k. try to look at the op/tech pro loop camera strap... they really make a difference over the stock camera strap which came with my dslr. but out of curiosity, i'd also like to try the invicta x1 camera strap.. see if it distributes the weight better than my op/tech. having said that, i've been using my op/tech for a month now and so far, i've got no complaints. :)

Crumpler straps are already available at Megamall (and possibly others stores as well). They go for around P1,350. Saw stocks of black and camouflage ones when I bought my 7 Million Dollar Home yesterday. Didn't buy one though because my D40 and kitlens combo is still light enough to be supported comfortably by the stock Nikon strap.

I love mine, it is very comfortable both on my shoulder or around my neck. I also attach mine in a fashion similar to this:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/arkku/1335553912/

where the end of the strap is sandwiched in the loop. However, I run the end in through the rectangular plastic ring. The Crumpler Industry Disgrace is the only strap that I have owned that allows for this.

Crumpler Disgrace Industry sells php1350, kinda overpriced! yes its available at the crumpler stores. I wanted to buy one sana.. but already have one Tamrac Boomerang bought at mayer last week, which I am thinking if going to replace it because of a wide contour of the strap. medyo istorbo kahit comfortable.. hehe :D maybe someone here is interested on my Boomerang. :D

Are the quick release buckles/hardware on straps such as Optech, Tamrac, Invicta, and others secure? Anybody had experiences wherein they accidentally released? Most of the good designs have these and I am having difficult deciding because of the fear of them becoming undone at the worst possible time.

randy_bautista
08-24-2008, 07:19 PM
Feel the same way about the Optech pro-loops so I added quick release zip-ties to the buckles. When I need it, the zip-ties just have a small latch I need to press for easy removal.

Hi daphne, incidentally i just got the Tamrac N-5057 Neoprene Boomerang Digital Camera Strap from JT Photo: http://www.tamrac.com/welcome.htm . http://di1.shopping.com/images1/pi/aa/af/b0/42709414-177x150-0-0_.jpg

I love neoprene straps, you can sweat on it, it has that "suspension" bounce, and I sort of like the fact that it has a "body", how do I explain this, like it doesn't fall limp like the leather straps, did I make sense?

I also like the aestetic features of the boomerang, its "sexier" with all the curves against some straight cut generic looking neoprenes out there.

I have used the Optech neoprenes, but like the camera attachment system of the Tamrac, feels more secure. Optech has like a "String" to attach it to the camera.

Well good luck on your research...

I dont know if tamrac is better than lowepro. but I am using Tamrac Boomerang Neoprene, and it feels good. :)

Based on Lowepro:

Speedster for active photographers and photojournalists.

Transporter for the professional or core enthusiast photographer who works with multiple cameras, binoculars or other photography equipment.

Voyager S for adventure photographers who wear their cameras sling-style across the chest, the straight Voyager S strap is also the perfect upgrade for photographers needing relief from those skinny, stock straps.

Voyager C for the adventure photographer, the Voyager C is also the perfect upgrade for photographers needing relief from those skinny, stock straps.

imho, if you keep on moving around (shooting events, festivals etc), a neoprene strap is not ideal because it tends to be bungy :) it keeps bouncing. on the other hand, if you have a neoprene strap, it's a neck saver :D

personally, i'm using a lowepro transporter (thanks fafi gid :D) and i have no issues with the strap. the padding it has is ideal for me :)

hth :)

hmmm... you're making me think twice about getting the Voyager-S strap from Vet... :) what's different in the Transporter version? is the padded strap not neoprene? i was not really considering it at first because the padded section seems to be "slideable"...

btw, my main field is documentation and photojournalism. hope you could enlighten the positives about the Transporter model. thanks!

@daphne,

what gear will you be carrying with your target strap? I've been using optechs for both my cameras and they work well enough for me. on it being bouncy...it's not bad considering i shoot sports mostly and have to move around a lot.

for me the padded section works because i tend to change the location of the padded portion. sometimes i carry on the shoulder, most often my camera is on sling across the body.

personally, bang for the buck, the transporter's cheaper than the voyager s. but it really depends on you. any other strap is good to use for photojourn. i know john javellana uses a crumpler industry disgrace strap:)

i bought a crumpler industry disgrace strap only because my camera default strap screamed "Nikon D700" and i wanted to be a little more inconspicuous. two weeks with industry disgrace, my only complaint about it is that the strap that goes through the camera's "ears" is rather stiff vs the nikon's very pliable. also the buckle is somewhat obstrusive vs the nikon's. i'm seriously thinking of switching back to the default nikon strap because of that. i usually sling a crumpler 5 mil whenever i take the camera along.

D.I.Y. Nikon wrist strap

Cost = Less than Php60 for sewing the stock strap together

Used the stock Nikon strap and converted it to a handy / sturdy wrist strap.

Advantages
No clutter when putting inside a camera bag
FAST --- Easy to put on / Easy to remove
Light and durable and safe
Unique hand / wrist strap
Cheap (recycle your stock kit strap) :)

I've moved back to the normal strap from the camera. Light, compact and foldable. Don't need the super weight reduction anymore since I use primes only nowadays.

Yes I have heard some good comments and ratings regarding this NeoStrap Invicta. But haven't try it and touch it pa.. hehe.. :D

I am currently using Lowepro Transporter Camera Strap. So far so good naman.

I have seen a Pacsafe Camera Strap at Greenbelt and it looks good! have anyone try this strap? want to know how's the strap performs? :)

The Invicta is great. If you're using light lenses, I recommend the normal strap. I learned that this strap thing is quite a sucker for my wallet, I tried out 5 straps already and those cost more than 1K each. I sold them off and kept the Invicta for heavy lens setups and the regular strap for most of the time (since I use primes).

for security purposes this strap performs as intended, but it really loses points because it lacks any form of anti-slip grip... it will slide off your shoulder at the slightest shrug. the only way to wear this strap safely is crossed over the chest, not hanging on one shoulder, making it very limiting.

Never had any issues with the lack of an anti-slip material, though opinions will undoubtedly vary on this. I like the fact that its long enough for me to sling across my chest. Kinda performs like the Rapidstraps imho. I don't really have that heavy of a setup yet but I didn't experience any discomfort hauling my camera + 18-50 2.8 + flash for several days during my travels. The strap held up very well, plus that extra feeling of security if someone tries to slash the strap and grab my gear is priceless.

I also like the fact that I can use the strap on other bags like my holster because of the connectors. Also used it to secure my bag to a table or chair while I taking a break from walking around wherever I was. Gotta love that locking function as well.

Pacsafe also posted a nice review on their site. Worth a few minutes of your time if you're considering their strap.

Pao,

I've seen the Pacsafe and examined the releast buckle...but I can't determine if its metal or plastic? I was trying to inspect it more closely but the sales clerk wouldn't let me :(

My only worry is if this loop/buckle fails...which I consider as the weakest point of the strap...your gear is really in jeopardy of getting damaged, seriously damaged to say the least.

Can you advise on this one?

The clips are metal, the loops are plastic, albeit quite tough plastic. Love the fact that I can lock the clips into position with the flick of a small lever. The connectors are also covered by a neoprene sleeve so they don't scratch the camera and so thieves can't quickly undo it as opposed to a quicker releasing system.

Thinking of buying the BLACKRAPID or Neostrap...

Which is better???

They're 2 very different straps.

1 is made for quickly bringing the camera to a shooting position, the other is just an excellent all-around strap.

Best advice I can give you is to test them both out for yourself. We all have different tastes.

Thinking of buying the BLACKRAPID or Neostrap...

Which is better???

depends also on whether you shoot landscape or not.

BLACKRAPID would not be an ideal choice for landscapers because one of the connection points is at the bottom of the camera body, interfering with quick tripod placement. NEOSTRAP does not have this problem since it uses the normal connection points on the camera body.

Chanced upon a Vanguard strap at the recent Photoworld tradeshow. At less than P800, it looks like a bargain. Have to use it over the next few weeks to see how it really feels. So far, its comfortable and not as hot on the neck as other straps. Also looks easily washable. It's a big improvement over my strap that came with the camera.

Would anyone be interested in a 2in1 strap? It's a traditional over the neck strap that can be tuned into a rapid strap and back again in a few simple steps.

I just kinda invented this today and I'm curios if others photographers would be into this kind of strap.

So far I'm loving my new design, unfortunately I can't post pics since I'm afraid that it might get copied.

Then you should have it patented first and manufactured. Only
then should you advertise and sell.

I'm using a Crumpler Industry Disgrace, the black one. I love how I don't have "CANON" characters screaming on my neck. It's also more comfortable. I wanted to go for the limited edition camo simply because of it's "limited edition" status, but I wanted something simple and inconspicuous, and the black Crumpler ID fit that need the best.

Based on what I'm back reading, straps are basically based on personal preference.
