View Full Version : Question to Lumix LX5 Owners...
joshcruz 11-14-2010, 11:42 AM Hi Guys,
I wanted to upgrade my wife's Lumix TZ5 to LX5. We went to Beijing's Wukesong Photostore and found one at around $400. She tried it and liked it, while I started looking at lenses, memory cards, etc. A few minutes later, she showed me the images she took using her two-year-old TZ5 and images she took of the LX5, both on iA mode. It turned out the TZ5 images looked sharper and more crisp. I told her she should use more "manual" settings, but she had a good point - she almost always just shoots on iA mode, hence she compared images using her favorite settings.
Does this mean LX5 is more aggressively reducing noise and details at iA mode? We were a breath away from buying one, as I believe Lumix makes the best p&s cams. Now I am tempted to sway her towards S95 :-(
daniel go 11-15-2010, 08:41 AM Josh, Are the two images shot with the same settings? It may be that the two cameras, although made by the same manufacturer, meter things differently. Or it could simply mean that the TZ5 uses a more aggressive sharpening algorithm by default.
Although I am probably not the right person to answer this since I have never used the iA mode. I almost always shoot with the camera at A-aperture priority mode and I am plenty satisfied with the results I get so far.

joshcruz 11-15-2010, 12:07 PM Hi Daniel, you bring up a good point. iA mode does not allow for user intervention hence it's hard to figure out if the TZ5 was doing more sharpening. The two images she tested on iA mode were both on default settings. The conditions and distance to object were nearly identical.

daniel go 11-15-2010, 01:42 PM Josh, If the TZ5 is still working fine and serving your wife's photographic needs then don't upgrade it yet, use the money you earmarked for a new camera to buy her (or yourself) something else. That's what I would do unless I want the LX5 for myself and use that as an excuse to buy it for my wife so I can "borrow" it from her hehe :)
MandyTupaz 11-16-2010, 08:16 AM Sir, May I also shoot a question using your forum?
I would just like to ask if the LX5 can also do some panning shots.
joshcruz 11-16-2010, 09:23 AM That's it - you got my "ulterior" motive! :-) Of course I can always tell her that I will just buy another lens!

daniel go 11-18-2010, 01:17 PM Mandy, yup. Any camera with a TV/ shutter speed priority or Manual mode can do panning shots :)
Josh, Great minds think alike hahahaha

Thank you sir Daniel, maybe you can share some tips on how to do it. If you don't mind.. :)
daniel go 11-20-2010, 11:03 AM Mandy, I rarely do panning shots but here is what I know. Try different shutter speed to find the "right" speed. Usually it's between 1/40 to 1/60 sec., you may have to close down your aperture (and lower your ISO level) if you are shooting in a bright condition. Hold the camera steady at arms length. Then pre-focus (half press the shutter button) on a spot where you want to freeze the action, hold that half press and then follow your subject, moving from your waist in a smooth steady motion while keeping your arms still. Once you reach your pre- focused spot, take the shot. If the shutter speed is not right, adjust and try again :)

Thank you sir, would be keeping that in mind. how would I know if I have to lower or higher the shutter speed? I'll try to shoot one for your comment sir... :)
daniel go 11-22-2010, 10:19 PM Mandy, Experiment lang. A "perfect" panning shot would show the background in a blur with the moving subject remaining sharp :)
MandyTupaz 11-28-2010, 11:46 AM Sir, can I ask a question on which filter would be advisable to use for an LX5. What would you recommend? A UV? or a Polarized Filter?
daniel go 11-29-2010, 01:10 AM Mandy, A UV would be great for everyday protection plus if it's a HMC type then it can help increase contrast and cut flare and haze. A CPL would be great if you shoot a lot of landscape and want to get wonderful blue skies or if you shoot trough glass or water as it helps cut the reflection :)
MandyTupaz 11-29-2010, 07:49 AM thanks for the info sir..I greatly appreciate it.
MandyTupaz 12-11-2010, 07:51 AM Sir Daniel, can I ask for some tips for landscape photography. BTW, I got myself a UV and CPL Filter. I'm planning to try it out on my next shoot.

Hi Guys. I didnt know that LX5 accepts filter. As I was thinking how the lens could be protected. Thanks to you, now I know. I'll buy a UV filter f I go by Qpo. What size by the way?

Hi Sir Delphi, there's an adaptor made for LX5. its 52mm around 600PHP if I'm not mistaken.
delphimirandamd 12-12-2010, 07:43 AM Hi Sir Delphi, there's an adaptor made for LX5. its 52mm around 600PHP if I'm not mistaken.
Hi Mandy. What is that adaptor? For the filter to fit? U mean, the smallest filter size (W/c is what?) is bigger than the lens thread of LX5? Thank you. Pls drop the sir, Thanks.
delphimirandamd 12-12-2010, 07:46 AM Oh sorry. U mean 52mm is the smallest or is that the LX5 filter size?
princess_almayda 12-12-2010, 05:14 PM hello! hope i can help answer your query. 52 mm is the size of the filter. you'll need an adaptor (they call it a 52mm lens adaptor) in your lens so that that 52 mm filter will fit.
in digital walker zoom (where i bought my adaptor and filter) in trinoma, there are options for a UV filter wherein an adaptor is not required. they have a stick-on filter (i forgot the brand) that clings close to the camera lens. it's smaller and about the same size as your lens diameter. the salesman didn't recommend it though since it will leave stick marks on the rim and besides, the adaptor will give better protection to the lens moving forward.
hope this helps! =)
MandyTupaz 12-13-2010, 04:28 PM Sir Delphi, sorry for the late reply. Ms.Princess explained it right. 52mm is the size of the filter that would fit the adaptor for the camera. I still recommend the adaptor rather than stick-on filters. So as not to mess up the camera. Great input Ms.Princess, appreciate it..
delphimirandamd 12-14-2010, 12:06 PM PrincessAlmayda, Thank you, and for the recommendation too.
MandyTupaz, Thank you. Its quite alright, just read it now anyway. Got busy too. Thanks again.
delphimirandamd 12-14-2010, 02:30 PM Hi Peeps. Any recommendation for a flash for the LX5? Or can I just use my Canons or even the generic Sunpaks? Thank you.

glbertpacariem 01-07-2011, 09:43 AM Hi, Im very new to photography, just recently bought an LX5- my first camera :).
Now I have a question regarding on the flash on my LX5.
I cant activate the flash on M, A, and S modes, even if I choose the option for "force flash", i t still wont flash. Is it normal? How can I activate it to force flash on the said shooting modes?
Thanks.
delphimirandamd 01-08-2011, 10:09 AM First, make sure the flash is UP (popped up from the body). If it still doesnt work, GO where u bought it. They can help u or at least demo it to u. Its just me.
MandyTupaz 01-28-2011, 08:08 AM Sirs, Just a question..I know LX5 is a great camera. That's why commander(wifeY) is so wanting it. What camera would you recommend because I really like LX5 as it is. I'm thinking of GF1 or another LX5, but having another LX5 is a redundant already...Please give me thoughts on this one. Thanks!
Nat Sanciangco 02-27-2011, 01:34 PM Sirs, where can I buy the LX5 adaptor in Makati? Will the adaptor+UV filter fit the LX5 leather case? thanks!

Check out filters exchange for the adaptor. I think they have it there. It won't fit the case anymore if you would be putting the adaptor.

Lino_Felarca 03-01-2011, 08:39 PM could someone point me please to a local distributor of original LX5 batteries? i know somebody asked this before but nobody has yet answered.

Is there a Panasonic distributor in Metro Manila? If so, that should be your best bet. Since I'm in the province, I just ordered a generic batt on ebay, from one of those HK-based vendors. Still waiting for it though. But so far, I've never ran out of juice in any day's shoot, stills and a little video. After maybe 180 shots, my battery meter is still untouched. Reviews say the LX5 can take over 300 shots before the battery dies.

It's closest competitor is the Canon S95, which is smaller, but almost the same sensor size. But it's wide is 28mm equivalent, though tele end is longer. Before getting the LX5, I almost bought the GF1 with the 20mm pancake lens (it's kit zoom is just too big). BUt no regrets there, coz the LX5 is much more handy, so light in my belt bag it's just like a cellphone.

SO far, haven't heard of original batteries of LX5. There are some generic batts here in Hong Kong but for originals, just not sure. Maybe I'll try to lurk around some shops and get back to the forum on this one.
Lino_Felarca 03-09-2011, 09:25 PM Thanks Mandy! Please let us know if you do find one.

Not being so excited, I found one shop here in Hong Kong carrying original accessories for Lumix. Its in Mong Kok, name of the shop is Wing Shing. I think they have an online store so you guys can check on them..
